My favorite page on wikipedia is "Wikipedia: Why is BFDI not on Wikipedia?" It's fascinating the way that wikipedia works in terms of notability to try to keep the site reliable, even if it can be frustrating.
@ThefifthBishopofGord2 күн бұрын
Stuff like that is why Fandom got anywhere in big communities. For all its errors you can at least find information on it about a game or series that you can’t find on Wikipedia due to it not meeting the qualifications.
@dolphin2.0.Күн бұрын
@@ThefifthBishopofGord you are indeed entirely right. I am unsure if you were implying it was, but it is not necessarily a bad thing. Yes, fandom exists only because of this, but so does all of the independent wikis. This also keeps a much more reasonable amount of articles to be on Wikipedia, allowing those communities to specialize and give a lot more information about that specific subject than would be reasonable to put on Wikipedia. Wikipedia can't reasonably be the home to all information or else it would be a much less useful encyclopedia. By limiting it only to what is notable, it keeps what is important there and allows room for others to specialize, and it keeps the information which is important regardless of time. As long as Wikipedia stands, almost all the articles that are currently there should continue to be on there because they're all important.
@kootunesscrewyКүн бұрын
This is why I don't trust Wikipedia for indie animation. As much as I love indie cartoons like BFDI and Ollie and Scoops, I think it's best if that content remains on a dedicated wiki that has alot of research and tools. I say like TV Tropes or Fandom.

@SprinchelArtКүн бұрын
I think this show might be the most important show about the internet on the internet It's well made, covers really interesting topics and ultimately has the most right idea of what THE INTERNET is all about. Or at least, what it should be all about. I think the whole dynamic of Manon and Cybermare is genius in it's simplicity. The combination of unfiltered love and brutal criticism comes together to make something really insightful. It always keeps the show away from leaning too much into two extremes - the kid friendly pop science or a harsh critical rant. It always keeps the show interesting and that's why it's always nice to listen to Manon and Cybermare talk about topics you wouldn't even usually care about. And there is honestly a lot of new information I hear every new episode. I really hope this series continues to thrive, no matter what.

I think this is legitimately my favorite webseries on the internet Also I really appreciate both the personalities of Manon and Cybermare and contrast between. Manon is the bright-eyed, inquisitive, and joyous one, like a nerdy teenager exploring the internet in the 2000's, while Cybermare is more subdued, cynical, and perhaps jaded with experience, like the late 20-somethings of nowadays that saw the good times come and go and, while still in tune with the internet, are maybe a bit resentful of what it's become today. Cybermare keeps Manon grounded in her excitable, near info-dump-level raves of internet lore and history, but still has the decency, level-headedness, and respect for Manon to come around on topics when Manon shows her something she can be genuinely impressed or even still inspired by. Cybermare is kind of what I imagine the average 4chan user of nowadays would be like (if that type of anon still existed anymore), and Manon the inspired and hard-working adolescent that makes Neocities websites, actually self-animated AMVs, and mountains of AU fanart, stories, and even askblogs, deeply interested and respectful of the early internet and trying their best to make it more like what they'd like it to be today, or at least carving out that little piece of it they can be proud of and call their own.

The kids _need_ to know about Homestar Runner. Not only was it a titan of its day, worthy of documentation and legacy, but it is also the archtypical example of flash animation: the lost art of the interactive video, back in the old days when you could interact with hidden easter eggs on websites and if you clicked the right spot in a Homestar video there would be a whole minigame to play.

@@Softcustomer2 no, he absolutely could buy Wikipedia, or at least otherwise take control of the Wikimedia foundation. The only reason the community got to vote to keep ads off the site was because the current owners understand the importance of their community, which is also the only reason it wasn't sold. If we wanted to look at a hypothetical where Musk did somehow take control of Wikipedia, I could easily see him applying locks to more pages, giving paid access to those pages or clearing out existing editors. coordinated disruption of wikipedia by users would probably work to disrupt any changes, but it would never be the same again. I also have no doubt that ads would appear almost immediately, and it would look a lot more like Fandom.

Plenty of governments, their intelligence services, and their allied NGOs make sure that their narratives of histories and political concepts get pushed. If you're in the West, you might think of China or Russia being the ones doing this, but if you don't think one of the biggest websites in the world isn't also being manipulated by the CIA, MI5, and (certainly right now) a certain US-backed Levant state, then I don't know what to tell ya.
