Grisha have to take a moment to focus/concentrate to use their powers, works better at a distance, which is part of why they spend so much time on combat training as otherwise hand to hand combat doesn't give them much opportunity to use their powers. Mal spends a buuunch of the books successfully taking down Grisha in hand to hand combat.
