For some reason, your voice reminds me of Daniel's narrator voice from the first Amnesia horror game. The commentary provides a healthy amount of engagement without being overwhelming.

I used to feel like that but my way of breaking theough that wall was to realise that you only need to engage with whatever level you feel confortable with at a given time. Most of the reports can be ignored and you can play a macro focused game at a shallow layer. You won't oerform as well but on easier difficulties there is much less micro brainpower required and you can focus on multi turn goals rather than the day to day minutiae of checking morale and balancing things on a knife edge.

I've been somewhat the same until I tried a Crusoe to learn everything peacefully. I noticed there that I quite enjoy the more city-building/expansion/colonization aspects of the game, took that understanding into playing normal games more peacefully and defensively and am having a lot of fun!

Hey man. When I play these long strategy games myself, my interest and probably more likely my attention span wanes. I don’t think I have ever watched anyone’s long play series all the way through. I just pick up tips to take me further in my own play throughs. Basically they inspire me to play longer and teach me things. I find your stuff really entertaining. But I kinda want to win on my own!!! if that makes any sense. you dom 6 really helped me, made me buy, and kept me playing, and now I will be playing shadow empire again soon. So you’re winning!

I've tried SE a few times and I think if I just sat down and really learned it I would enjoy but, but I also enjoy watching Let's Plays of it, and by far you are my favorite. You manage that balance between explaining the game, explaining what you're doing and actually playing, REALLY well! And looking at your numbers, seeing almost 4k views on episode 3 of a niche overly complex war game is honestly kind of insane! Love what you do, keep it up! I'll try to keep up commenting lol.

Thank you! That's very kind of you to say so. Keep trying with Shadow Empire, it might take a few tries to for it to bite but if it does, it doesn't let go easily. I think I got lucky with this series: there was a Steam sale and I think the game sold very well around the same kind of time, and that really inflated my viewing numbers. But to give myself credit, to have around 300-400 still watching after 60 episodes is very unusual and I think the particularly difficult game conditions have contributed towards making it an exciting series for people.

I remember learning about this game from a KZbin video a few years back. And now, the algorithm suggested me your first video of this playthrough. I have a bit more of an appreciation for how detailed this game is, after seeing you set it up for the first time. I'll probably binge some of your earlier series as well while waiting for your next videos. Good luck on your playthrough! Edit: Probably one of your earlier series has this, but I'd like to see a breakdown of the core mechanics of this game, just so that I may better understand the situation on the proverbial table. Macro aspects are mostly self-explanatory, but some more involved things like worker/population management, resource production, construction, combat, etc elude me for now. Thanks a lot! Have a good day!

@@battlemode Well deserved honestly. Again, I'm still early, but you've done a really good job presenting a story, sticking with the challenge that you were facing due to your premature war, and showing off many of the systems that make the game amazing. Demonstrating how you could turn around something that was beginning to look like a losing proposition altogether and seeing how many videos yet remain might also be motivational to other people to stick with starts that may not look all that promising. Definitely a fun series. :D

0:30 I've found that the biggest marker for me on if I'll end up sticking with a series is probably pacing. I just don't have time to watch grand 40 hour long series that often, and I find it especially hard with 4X games where the density of interesting new decisions tends to fall off a bit by the mid to late game. As the scope grows I find I need the camera to zoom out more in order to keep track of every thing. Like, following every action of every unit makes sense and is interesting in the early game when the number of units is small and so each of their actions matter a lot, but by mid to late game when there are wars with dozens or hundreds of units watching the whole thing with that same level of detail becomes pretty overwhelming and tedious to me. The only way I've found I can stay invested in big complex series like that is if the presenter is good at editing things down so it doesn't get lost in the minutia. Cutting out some of the small skirmishes in a big war, or speeding up footage and doing a voice over summarizing the highlights. I've seen lots of commenters saying they like your current pacing, so I get that I'm not necessarily in the majority here. You can never satisfy everyone with one series, though I've seen a couple youtubers like Latherix try an interesting formula lately where they do a big 30-50 hour game and then when the series is over they edit it down into a 2 to 3 hour long movie. Those tend to get quite a lot of views, might be a cool way of getting more out of the same footage. I know I would definitely come back to see how a lot of the old series I started watching ended up, if they got reposted in a more compact format.

Thanks for the detailed feedback! I probably won't be doing too many more super long series like this, I just don't have time for it anymore. Most people only watch for the first half dozen episodes and by the end I've got 300-400 if I'm lucky. I tend to do these more because I enjoy playing them, but I can't always commit to finishing them and that's become a real problem for the channel. I really like the idea of editing down a long series into shorter form content but I do video editing 40 hours a week at work and it's the last thing I want to do when I clock off, so I'm probably not gonna do that. I do have some plans for the channel going forwards, so hopefully have something to share there soon! Thanks again!

a QOL tips about replacement your troops : on mng tab select model, for example in infantry model you put old model as low and new model as reg. then you click on HQ by infantry tab you select low row and click all to turn into tollerate , now you create on replacement the newest model of infantry and end your turn on new turn on replacement you will find old model infantry brought from the field replace by your new model ,you just upgrade your old model into new model and so on untill all you infantry will replace with new model . Ps if my tips is hard to understand you can learn about this on steam guide complete with picture explaining this. PPs. IC is important because his/her job is to train all your leaders to be able perform their job better by issuing card like cabinet retreat ,governor convention, wargames etc. By doing this my leaders in mid games have their suitable very high above 100 everyone of them.

@@battlemode iirc it is based on simulation of one or few combat rounds, so every time you change the composition the simulation get redone resulting in possibly different odds because of the randomness/rolls involved. Your pacing of 'lets plays as a learning experience for others' is perfect. Aside from all the ADHD kids squealing at 200 wpm my second pet hate is the ol "now this is the income symbol, if you hover over it you will see..." . No shit if I hover over my income I can see where it is coming from and going with associated modifiers. You avoid all that an instead assume we have a brain - your version would be something like "ok incomes a bit low lets check our 'x' - oh x seems reasonable I'm going to take a look at 'y' now... hmmm are there any 'z' available we could use to improve apon.." It's perfect (and yes I am up to your latest video - still watching - but thought I better post it here). I rarely bother logging in or 'subbing' - Told Das the same thing when I logged on just to comment and sub to him. I remember the very few people I like watching continually so there's no need, but I digress. Micromanagement is likely most effective when you're small but somewhat unavoidable when you grow big. Since you can't automate your zones. Though admittedly I rarely paid much attention to the water intake from the initial ice-mine since water was usually plentiful. I don't really lose attention for series like this, more often I've found the people playing them seemingly lose interest and either switch to a new game or just call it a victory before the end screen comes up. Quick suggestion on the "too slow/too fast" conundrum. When you've got a complex decision to make, stop the recording, figure it out off line, then explain your final decisions when you come back. Good example here is trying to work out what to do with your leaders. There are all sorts of angles to this and trying to figure it out on line means your commentary can interfere with your thought process and your thought process can interfere with your commentary leaving you in danger of appearing to go round in ever decreasing circles. If you worked out stuff like this off line then your commentary and execution would probably be more cohesive and faster. You'd also probably get more turns in per episode although each episode would take a bit longer to complete, not sure what the balance is there, but I think more turns per episode propels the playthrough's narrative which probably leads to greater engagement.

I don't think it's good to cut out all the musing, as I get far more feedback that people like it than people not liking it, but I agree that if it's excessive it slows the series down and I don't want that. Thanks for the feedback, really valuable for me!

I always get really anxious when youre expanding out with such large gaps in your territory. That AI up north in particularly has me worried. That said, Im still a wee baby when it comes to this game so Im way more cautious than you would be

Your instincts serve you well, this game is full of nasty surprises and if you're playing seriously and don't reload mistakes, you really do have to play cautiously.

"This is cool" The thing I dislike is that the map is "barren". I wish the dev would do a terrain overhaul. But a desert planet is the ugliest ^^

This is about as barren as Shadow Empire gets. But some of the maps look really cool, there are a lot of different terrain and biome types

I'm not sure you can afford Medium engine Buggies with this oil income, let alone Light Tanks. I think you should never lower Truck or Rail Station Production below 100%. This reduces range points, which is horrible.

First off, these are trivial complaints, I love your content, just providing requested feedback: (1) It bothers me you never seem to finish a game so we really ever see endgame strategy, tactics, and units (2) You over dither on choices. Make a decision, move forward. Some dithering ok but not ad nauseum. (3) Related to two but scatterbrain (sorry can't think of a better term) a bit much too, i.e. like someone with ADD you jump over all the place rapidly on tangents without ever completing the damn action/concept you were trying to complete, like "let me assign a leader to this task oh look a pony let me look at the geography report design a bomber hit next turn" and you never assigned the leader, finished the bomber, or rode the pony.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated! 1) Shadow Empire games can be very long and when I was doing the eXplorminate thing, it was very hard for me to finish a series as I constantly had to switch games to cover. There's not so much excuse now, aside from me occasionally wanting to cover hot topic games. I'm not gonna promise I'll finish every series, but going forwards I'm intending to only play one "main" series, by which I mean longer game, and allow myself to upload shorter term stuff at the same time. 2) I have to think about what I'm doing, and sometimes I make snap judgements that need second thought, see 3. 3) Yes I have attention issues, but I'm constantly looking out for ways to minimise them. I think like I write, very quickly and my brain spits out a choice but I then go back and re-calculate it several times later on. It gives me a very fast processing speed but relatively low productivity... annoying but it is what it is, I make do with the hardware I was given at birth.

@@battlemode Oh i can fully empathize, I suffer the same problem especially around #2 and watching you makes me realize why I would hate to watch me lol. Ad nauseum though is the key thing to try to be cognitive of and head it off at the pass before you go to far down that hole.

I can add that I have noted the same 3 points, but I am not bothered much by any of them. Do not push yourself to do something you don't want.@@battlemode

No worries, I'm genuinely grateful for the feedback, I'll try to improve on all those things as much as I can. If you want to see a big Shadow Empire game played to completion, google "Life on Seth Shadow Empire" to find the big game I played for eXplorminate. It's 101 episodes long!
