Shadow Force is another game by Technos, creators of Double Dragon, which I'd never heard of before.
The really cool thing about this particular coin-op is the way you can take over enemies and use their powers against them. Sure, you can absolutely kick butt in your default form, but hijacking a bit with a plasma sword or heavy-hitting brawler droid is tons of fun and gives you plenty of options in terms of play style.
If you're looking for something a bit different, give Shadow Force a try!

Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master is the epitome of this trope for me. It just makes perfect sense that a ninja's core skillset would enable him/her to take out mecha while riding a jet powered surf board.

An above-average title, I love the Technos reference in the first level (the Kunio-kun games are pretty great, for the most part!). I coulda sworn there was a game with a similar concept that was more of a platformer for the NES, also a Japanese-developed game, and for the life of me I can't remember the name of it.

Play this one a dozen times and its a cool beat'em up which you can possess enemies as playable fighters which adds some options. The one odd choice is that the US version uses a six button layout while the JP version only uses three buttons...

In addition, the US version forces you to play an extra fight after killing the last boss where if you lose, you get a bad ending and don't get another chance.

I remember playing this once in a skating rink in the 90s. Really fun concept. It's like Ditto from pokemon inside an action game.

This game is really cool! Multiple characters, you can possess goons. Very comic book kind of feel. I did wonder what those spiders with human faces at the end actually did, though.

no, "Shadow Warriors" is really just "Ninja Gaiden" in the UK + EU. Back in the 80s, there were such prohibitions for entertainment to not use the word "Ninja" in such countries.
