This and Flower are the only games to give me proper motion sickness while playing them. It was so bad with SotC I actually returned the game because I knew I'd never finish it. If people want to argue about the clunky movement controls being consistent with the character or whatever that's fine with me. But there's just no excuse for camera control so poor it actually makes you nauseous. That's the sort of thing that literally makes a game unplayable.

I'm glad he spoke his mind despite this game pretty much being a revered classic. Everything has its faults, and nothing is exempt from proper criticism.
@Jackcaptaincruncher6 жыл бұрын
Yeah but he got upset over minimal stuff that's more his fault than the games. He didn't take the time to learn to controls and the physics and complained about the sword not working. Same goes with PUBG, its not fun until you learn the physics and how to time shots. The comment above also explained that the sword doesnt work in shadows. You watch him play getting over it and it's the same story. It took me less time than dunkeys whole video to get further than him when i played it for the first time. I wouldn't say its a 5/5 perfect game but its higher than a 3, yaknadamean?
@olmusty33396 жыл бұрын
I get what your saying, I just still feel like his review is fair. His knocks on the control scheme are down to his own impatience and unwillingness to learn and master said control scheme, and this factors into his overall opinion on the game. (He's not the only one either, read some of these comments.) Really that's all this video is, his opinion on the game. The only thing he actually complains about are the controls, he praises everything else but the graphics, which he pretty much says are on par with what we expect today. If this makes the game a 3/5 in his opinion, then that's what it is. In my opinion, easily a 4/5. This game has aged so well that you can still boot it up on your ps2 and have a blast if you wanted to, and that's saying something. But if to him, it's a 3/5 because they haven't really improved on anything but the graphics and performance of the game, then that's still fair.

I would only criticize dunkey's review for being very brief and lacking support for his claims particularly on the controls. I never thought the controls were that bad. I thought that climbing up a giant moving object should offset your balance and often. Also, the horse seemed to get the job done. It's not like horses can drift or make sudden sharp turns without diluting it's momentum.
@videogamedunkey6 жыл бұрын
I think the wobbly walking on the bosses is the best implementation of it's realistic approach to controls. The climbing is really stiff though and the horse struggles a lot in tighter areas like when you cross a bridge.
@martijnschouten49646 жыл бұрын
videogamedunkey a question did you try to move Agro yourself trough these tighter areas or did you let him use his own path finding because his own path finding gave me no problems in smaller areas and bigger I just controlled him myself
@thepopeofatheism6 жыл бұрын
If you just hold down Triangle, the horse will auto-navigate tighter areas, minimizing the clumsiness. But there's always the problem of, when climbing on a monsters forearm, "if I press up, which direction does the game think that is?"
@roushington6 жыл бұрын
I see where both of you guys are coming from. In the Colossus fights with the horse I thought certain areas were too tight, and it made it difficult to maneuver. However, I also found it just way too satisfying to launch myself from the horse and onto the Colossus's back to care. Shadow of the Colossus really knows how to implement scale and tone, and, outside of the actual fights since those are entirely relative based on the player's abilities, pacing as well. The game is just too beautiful for me to linger on what I consider very minor flaws. Half the game so far, for me, has been just running around the world and looking at things. I'm five hours into this game and have only beaten 7 Colossus so far because I just love exploring. That's what caught my attention so much. I've just never played anything like this game, and it's a game that requires so much risk to create because of how perfectly the designers have to make everything for it to be worth anyone's time. So for me, this game is, above all else, beautiful, beyond satisfying, and properly intense, able to make you feel dread and awe at the same time because of how beautiful but daunting the world and Colossi are. 5/5, mastapeece (to me). Not to mention that if you are in a fight and Agro is there, Wander will scream "Agro!!" when you call for him, which is just one of my favorite things in the game.

The game worked fine, all the crazy camera angles were part of the fun, especially in the aerial battles. There's some weird inputs and etc.. If your character plays so smoothly and moves so effortless, that can erase the difficulty of an already easy game.

I think Team Ico's intentions behind those unpredictable elements is to create a feeling that the game's world adheres to its own rules and lives on regardless of the player. This subverts many player expectations, most players instinctively think games are only made up of obstacles that can be destroyed, avoided or solved and that the player will have full control over a set of tools to overcome these obstacles. Team Ico has consistently employed this air unpredictability in all their games to create simplistic themes through their mechanic's; leading the girl through the world of Ico says a lot about responsibility and trust, going through the feat that is killing all the colossus in SOTC says a lot about sacrifice and the last guardian sort of mixes these together with themes of sacrifice, understanding and trust playing a large role in all the gameplay mechanics. For some people, this is a hard sell since it can feel like a game that doesn't function properly, but for others, this might be why they think these are best games ever made. (thanks for reading if you got this far)

In this comment section, there are people who think an arbitrary number at the end of a review is the only thing that matters, then there are the people who actually pay attention to the review and realise just how much you enjoyed the game. My biggest gripe were the controls too, overall i agree, everyone needs to sit in a room alone and experience the game from start to finish. Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian were not mechanical failures, they were just mechanically challenged. Each creature had dynamic climbing surfaces, over many moving polygons. When you climb, you are climbing over a mesh of triangles, which don't like the Cartesian coordinate system. At all times, the game needs to determine the player's position, which section of the climbing mesh it is on, and which direction in 3D space they are facing. Some studios have mechanical difficulties with even the most basic climbing abilities over static objects (seriously, Space Engineers doesn't even have ladders). On top of that, the creatures' AI had to respond while the player is climbing them. The entire concept of having moving "levels" on these Colossi is a challenge. Adding a huge world around them just makes things even better.

Fair enough. But at least it's not worse than the original so people can still enjoy it on the same level with better graphics. An overall improvement to gameplay would be pretty sweet but I guess it would have been easy to mess it up. I'm pretty happy with what we got but I understand your point.

@Awesomeslay996 жыл бұрын
Thank you, dunkey, this video taught me a lot... not nessecarily about SotC but more about interpreting other people's opinions and learning how to better understand the difference between my opinion and everyone else's. When I first started watching reviews on the internet, I was honestly one of those people who would try to find a way to justify their purchase by getting mad in an attempt to defend it weakly, but I later realized that I didn't have to do that because it was purely their own opinions. At that point I had never entirely understood what that meant, however, because whenever I did see a review of a game i really liked and they really didnt like it as much as I did (like this video) I still felt a pit in my stomach because I felt like that opinion somehow had more validation over mine and what I thought I liked I now didn't like soely because someone else didn't. And this wasn't just because I saw new flaws I didn't know or care about in the game, I genuinely thought my opinion was somwhow not as credible for a game, despite me not actually thinking that consciously. After watching this video and giving it some thought I finally fully figured it out. How you felt about a game isn't how I felt, andI know that sounds really "duh" but truly understanding that your unique experiences to a game reflect your feelings towards it when you're done. I personally didn't think the controls were terrible, and yeah, I know the engine for the game is the same as the ps2 version but it never bothered me or my experience. I rarely ever got stuck on a collision box, I never glitched off the colossi, I never had an issue with the colossus AI, but I see that you had a problem with it and that's when it truly hit me. I don't have to feel bad that you didn't like it as much as I did and that somehow makes the game worse than I thought it was because we didn't play the exact same game the exact same way. I'm sorry to hear that you don't find this game as enjoyable as I do, and if anything I might have ended up with a more enjoyable experience than you might have but I appreciate your time and effort into critiquing this game because not only did you feel the way you did, but you also helped me to discover how myself and only me, felt about it as well. Thanks Dunkey, and sorry for the Colossus sized paragraph ;)
@Awesomeslay996 жыл бұрын
gluegunassault2010 I think you missed the whole point of what I was saying. I'm not trying to discredit his opinion because of some preference, I'm saying I understand how and why he liked and disliked the aspects of the game he talked about and how that differed from my own views. I can understand his gripe with the controls and I understand his appreciation for the graphics despite my indifference to graphics in games as a whole. Though I will debate how someone's preset preference on games determines their opinion on every game with those qualities. As he said in his video about Game Critics, he likes Persona 5 despite not having a preference to Anime or Turn-based RPGs. In fact, he said he hated those genres and yet he still liked it. It seems like he likes the game just fine, just not as much as I, and I think a lot of that is because he doesn't think the controls are as tight as he would like.
@Awesomeslay996 жыл бұрын
gluegunassault2010 I see what you mean, and I can agree. I can see how others would prefer a focus on tight controls as opposed to realism for the sake of the vision. I would imagine Ninja Gaiden would not be nearly as good if the controls were more restrictive like SotC. In fact, the game might just fall apart if that were the case. Thinking about it like that, I get how preference can change someone's experience of a game outside of their preference in genre.

Man, I thought you couldn't help but love this game if you saw it through to the end. I thought it was a masterpiece, and I just replayed it last year before I even knew about the remake. I just sat down with some friends and we passed the sticks all night and beat it that night. I guess the controls aren't great, but I think that was a conscience choice and is part of the challenge of the game. You have to pretty much become a master the game by the end of it. It's definitely a puzzle game in disguise. If you aren't okay with that I could see you having an issue with some parts of it, but it's soooo worth seeing it through anyway. You really had to have played it yourself blind to fully get it too. If you don't know the feeling of personally plunging your sword into the skull of one of those giant beasts, killing them without fully understanding why, it's just not the same.

In part, the controls being how they are makes sense with the story. The Wanderer is not good at all with the sword but he has great bow skills and notice how he has a good stance when using the bow too. Probably had good bow training and not so good (or none?) sword training. His cloak had the same symbol you see on the cloaks of the other tribe members (duh) and it's the glyph that appears on the weak spot of the colossi. So he was probably part of the, say, order of people who were guarding the sword and the place were Dormin was sealed. But this, and the fact that the colossi are so strong (and so many) just add to the point that he was REALLY willing to save that girl. No matter how much he lacked the strength (he kinda lacks muscles), the skill and even knowing what he was doing was forbidden by his tribe he still went through with it. Aaaaaaaaaand in part...well, PS2 era technology haha

I remember a guy awkwardly climbing and holding on for dear life...to giant moving, flailing, fighting, dying colossi. I didn't once blame the controls when I failed. That's just my experience. You're so right about the feeling of killing the colossi. I first played the game on PS2 in 2017, so my first experience didn't have the trophy unlock interrupting the cutscene after you kill the first colossus. And up until that point I was nervous and anxious, because I knew I had to fight this big ass monster but didn't know how I was going to do it. I mean the scale of the colossus compared to your character is huge, and I wasn't sure I was going to be able to pull this off. But of course you learn how to play the game, you kick its ass. And when I was killing it I felt so triumphant! The music was inspirational, pushing me forward, very encouraging to me. And I could see slowly and surely I was taking the colossus's health down. I felt unstoppable. Then I plunged my sword into it for the final time, and suddenly the cutscene plays. The music is somber, depressing, and the colossus begins to stumble as it struggles to keep itself upright and struggles to keep itself alive. Then it collapses. And I was just sitting there like, "Whoa...wait did I do the right thing? Do I keep going?" and of course I did keep going because that's all you can do. It was such a wonderfully uncomfortable experience, and I'm very glad to have felt it.

The idea that your character was anchored to something by its hands while its body and legs could flop around where the physics led was amazing at the time. It was one of those points when a game had innovative physics, good gameplay, and an aesthetic that appealed to people without making non-gamers roll their eyes. Half life did it with fps games, and i think Shadow of the Colossus did it with third person exploration games. Nothing looked or played like it at the time.

The graphics were perfect the music was awe insipring and the story made me fucking cry. I replayed it on the PS4 and was instantly reimmursed in it aall over again. Every fight was fresh and brought the same level of asonishment as i felt in the beginning. It's like Skyrim when it got rereleased but actially good!

Dunkey, you're awesome. Every video you make is instantly a classic. You are one of my favorite youtubers and one of the funniest. 6/10 no Danny Devito.

To me, it wasnt the story that blew me away. It was the world, vast beautiful landscape, that says ancient yet the emptiness you mentioned, makes it eerie at the same time. Beautiful and eerie together
