I'm on the fence whether it's terrible or good. It's possibly the least responsive game ever created, but it's also really unique and has some incredible moments. The visuals are amazing but the PS4 can barely run it. I think people who have the patience for it, who are fans of Team Ico's other stuff will love it. On the other hand, large segments of the game are built on these really unreliable mechanics or mechanics that are just flat out boring.

Interesting how Trico behaved different for different players including me. Trico jumped the first time I gave the command.

Dunkey obviously exaggerated his experiences with the AI, but yeah it's weird that so many reviewers are saying the AI doesn't work. I played the entire game and never had any huge issues with it. Worst case scenario, Trico might have taken like 20 seconds to figure out what to do. It makes me wonder if Trico's responsiveness depends on how you treat him, because I would always pet him after he obeyed my commands or helped me.

Me too. After everything he did right, I would pet him and try to find all the barrels for him to eat. So I guess it has something to do with him listening to the point where later in the game he would respond very quickly to the commands.

Waly Waly Yep. On an interview, the creators said that there's a care meter that will determine if Trico will listen to you. But, they make the ingenious idea to hide it from the player and make it that the AI will follow orders at random times just to confuse you even more.

Ya I didn’t have any problems with it. I don’t think a visible care meter is needed. It should be pretty natural that you wanna take care of it, that’s the whole point of the game. I don’t see how anybody who bought this game and played it first time would have any trouble taking care of Trico unless they really didn’t like dogs or birds. But that’s just my experience, which was a pretty good one.

UncomfortablyClose The only problem is that Trico, on a low care meter, keeps following orders at random which: A) Makes people think that the care meter doesn't exist and that's it's the AI fault. And B) Kind of kill off the pet care aspect of this game since the following and disobeying the order happens at random. I'd say most people who play and then quit the game could have a better experience if only they had make Trico to not execute the orders rather than doing it at random.

I had this exact experience, i got to a part where i required him to put his front paws up somewhere so i could climb onto a ledge, and he just refused to do it, im talking 40 mins plus of trying. which broke me into googling a youtube walkthrough to see if what im missing something, and nope, i was doing the right thing, he just wouldnt do it. upon googling, many got stuck in the same place as me and there were suggestions like reset, reload, try a new save, all this stuff, i ended up giving up and so ive never played it since (and i got it on launch)

This video pretty much sums up my experience. It was unbelievably frustrating to play. Not because the game was difficult, but because the controls are so weird, the camera is pretty poor and the game is so derpy and almost never does what I actually want it to. Although the art style is really good, and the game looks beautiful. It has some of the best animations I've seen in a game, but it was such a pain to play. And this is coming from someone who loves Shadow of The Colossus. I just think they should have spent more time working on the mechanics and less on the visuals, but that's just my opinion.

Wiss Miss Yeah, Dunky confused the AI by spamming commands, but let's not talk about the slow, horrible fighting where you don't have to do anything, and the few times you do, Trico kills it for you. Story was okay, but gameplay was meh, puzzles were garbage that if you took to long to do, the game deemed you as too stupid and showed you the answer. Good story game, ruined by incompotence. It's not bad, but it sure as hell isn't good. It's mediocre, at best.

I just wanna say... I just finished the game, and God damn... I'm so disappointed I waited 7 years for that. The platforming controls are totally broken, trico's commands controls are totally broken too... It just feels so frustrating. Having amazing art, animation, and lore doesn't make a game. Having a really, really cute companion doesn't make a game. What makes a game is the gameplay. The last guardian isn't even close to SotC in terms of either gameplay or art. Now I just have to erase it from my memory.

Tanked Thomas Tanked Thomas The AI doesn't suck though. It's actually made really well. Feed him, pet him, clean him, and take any spears out of him, and he'll be more obedient. Do none of those things and he'll ignore you more often. Trico isn't broken. Spamming his commands breaks him. His AI revolves entirely around how you, as the player treats and interacts with him. It's almost as if he was designed that way.

@@JakobatHeart It's not bad design, people just play it wrong. The controls can be wonky, but Trico's AI is completely fine. It works perfectly if you play the game like you're meant to. Care for Trico, make sure he can SEE you for what you're directing him to, and don't spam the commands cuz it continuously resets him to stop and look at you again for your "new" instruction instead of doing the thing. (AKA LET him do it before deciding if he understood you.) All common sense things and they work with the game's narrative of learning how to bond/communicate with Trico and he with you.
