another thing about guard AI in this game I can't remember seeing in other games: in a situation where you have a stationary guard and a moving patrol circling around, if you take out and hide the stationary guard, the next time the moving patrol comes by, they will notice their buddy is missing and will go into search mode.

The devs actually wanted to make a new Commandos game, but they couldn't get in touch with the rights holders. I seriously hope that Blades of the Shogun does well, cause then we could see Shadow Tactics: Guns of the Future :D

I love this game. It rewards intelligent gameplay and scouting enemy patterns/tactics. My favorite part is the effort that goes into killing enemy samurai when Mugen is unavailable. The degree to which these kills take in terms of planning leaves the act itself feeling like a major accomplishment. This is one of my best buys in a long time.

Wow, that line about the guards watching a house blow up and thinking it the was the 4th of July really got me. It also made me think back to how in Metal Gear Solid V you could literally drive a tank up to a guard post in the middle of an open desert with the sun high in the sky, park 40 yards away and jump out in a huge suit of ceramic plated body armor with a giant rocket launcher on your back, light machine gun hanging off your chest, suppressed submachine gun on your hip and an attack dog in a matching suit of armor at your side and the guards would all but wave at you! I always imagined the closest one staring at you saying to himself "I bet he's a nice guy..." in the voice of Donut from Red Vs. Blue right before I turned invisible and snuck up behind him to slit his throat, even with all that it's still one of my two favorite games...

I love Daedalic Entertainment! The studio is simply producing high quality games that are far away from being commercially driven. There are also levels at night and levels with rain. At night lights extend the view cones (view cones are overall shorter though) and in the rain guards can hear you when you're going through puddles. Almost every level feels completely different.

It is a bit late to answer, but the studio did not go bankrupt...not completely anyway. They switched to mobile games and are trying to make a smartphone Commandos :( The studio that made this game actually approached Pyro Studios and Eidos leftovers to make a new Commandos title.....but Pyro refused because of the said mobile market attempt :( It is for the better IMO, this game is pretty unique and it is nice to have a new IP :)

I love this game! As you say, it can be nut crunchingly difficult at times - occasionally I'd get so frustrated I had to quit after 15 minutes - but the gameplay is great fun, and the levels like puzzles you're sure you can solve with just one more try.

This game is simply AWESOME, a commandos type of game. The characters are also similar to commandos, different era and setting, but similar skillsets. The voice acting is also very convincing and fitting for the characters, npcs, etc. The story is also quite good, character interactions is also good. The enemies are well placed and each of the map is well built and varied, from snowy map, night/day map, castle map, village map, etcetera.

this is a great game, some say a "rip off "of commandos but totally not a bad thing, the devs have even said themselves they were heavily inspired by it. It was a buy before i even saw a review. Chaining those shadow kills (setting multiple characters to perform an action which is performed by pressing enter when set up) is so satisfying. Six missions in and 10 hours i have had quite a few "wow" moments. If you liked commandos its a no brainer :)

It IS a great game and I'd agree that it should be recommended, but should include the warning that there are times when the games difficulty feels overtuned to... well breaking point imho. Lack of points of ingress and blind spots the game requires you to cheese abilities and quicksave/load regularly due to incredibly punishing timing requirements and later missions are literally headache inducing. There is a point when the game felt really challenging and fun albeit incredibly slow paced but as the game progressed the difficulty ramp up and enemy placement became just TOO GOOD. I don't know if I should praise the devs or not for this as there are times when exhausting all options becomes a real issue. The "shadow mode" is a nice feature but it's again undertuned (as is the case with most of the player abilities/mechanics) time remains normal speed while you're queuing up your abilities and one mistake will lead to the whole team takedown failing entirely and alerting the whole map. Enemy sight cones even on normal difficulty are literally MASSIVE and the areas where you can sneak are often tiny. Ultimately I found the difficulty not so much challenging on later missions but instead cheap. There is zero choice of who you take on missions, no progression system and there seems to be a real issue with balance being heavily skewed in favour of the enemies. The "ninja" characters are vastly superior to the samurai and marksman outside of niche uses and ultimately you'll find yourself doing far more with those characters than you will with anyone else. I like games that make me stop and think, but there are times when I find myself after 10 to 15 minutes, finally working out the ONLY viable approach to a set of guards only to discover that if I'm off by even half a second in my approach it will fail. Failure in this game being heavily punished due to a weird mechanic whereby if you're being "spotted" but not recognised your movement speed is steadily reduced proportionate to how many enemies are spotting you. This doesn't seem too bad until you're left with the option of using mugen (the samurai's) aoe attack which requires you to be in spitting distance of them. Verticality has nice uses until you find yourself unable to kill enemies on higher ground where there realistically should be no way that a guard on lower ground should see you. It seems like everything in this game is designed to limit the player in ways that ultimately end up more frustrating than anything else. Nice review though :) agree with it for the most part. Just think the difficulty is badly handled and the game needs a good tuning pass to give the player more viable options that don't take 20 minutes to set up only to then work ONLY with absolute perfect timing.

This game looks suspiciously identical to Desperados from 2001, aside from the obvious difference in setting. This game was made by german developer Mimimi who is fairly new. Desperados was also made be a german developer, Spellbound which is no longer operating. I highly suspect Mimimi is a company consisting of some of the Spellbound people.

looks like you've made it acg. you got themsmall following of haters. nothin wrong with thumbing down a video, but what's to dislike besides his personal opinion ? Its a detailed review, and it's a review through his own personal perception. I just don't understand. feels like a favor to me "the consumer," that this review simply exists, whether I disagree with the content creator's opinion or not .
