The timed missions are brutal and can be totally unfair at times. But damn, they feel soooo good when you escape with 1 turn left. They really ratchet up the level of tension in a game where everyone just over watch creep 2 squares per turn. All of my memorable fire fights were in timed missions.

The reason everyone did that in XCOM 1 was because the game taught you to play that way. When you pit the player against insurmountable odds and give the aliens an advantage if he triggers them on his own turn, you're basically teaching him that doing so is bad and he should avoid it as much as possible.

XCOM 2 at least made it so that the aliens no longer have 2 actions on their following turn (after they've already moved once, when triggered), thus alleviating the pressure of having to discover new squads.

i feel like most missions would be FAR better if fireaxis gave us just 1-2 turns more breathing room, I cant tell you how many missions I completed the object and killed all enemies only to discover that i cant get all my guys to the sky ranger before the timer is out. the reason they put the timers in is sound, as waiting around in overwatch at the edge of the enemies patrol range for a free double turn was essentially an overpowered strategy in xcom1, and the timer is to prevent that kind of meandering around that the devastating pay off requires. but god damn there is a fine line between keeping long winded strategies in check or relentlessly rushing the player like a jockey trying to pull a victory from last place and fireaxis missed that balance by a long shot.

Regarding timed fights, and an overall time limit, the most recent version of XC2 has an option to double the amount of time. I'm not sure if this requires the War of the Chosen DLC, since I already had WotC when this option was added.

9:30 I completely agree with this one. just finished xcom 2 and the timed missions were so frequent and stressful (become much easier later on, yay for power creep!) that at some point i was so annoyed by them, i had to take a short break and calm down. they are insufferable, you just have ONE way to play out these missions, which is, as you described it, move and shoot, rinse and repeat. almost no possibility for proper ambushes or stealth actions. also, on my system (overvolted and overclocked AMD 7870, Phenom II X6 1055T overclocked to 4ghz, 16 gigs ram, loaded from an ssd), the game hitched and stutterd constantly and crashed on me more than i deem acceptable. i hope they do some performance improvements, it is unbearable at times. especially the frame smoothing was a real pain. it removed the worst of hitchiung, but then introduced even more crashes (crashes even occured with non overcloked settings, so it wasnt my overclocks being unstable). what also kinda disappointed me that i had only one ufo chasing my avenger down, ONCE. and the mission throws enemies at you constantly. it is just bland and stressful, nothing compared to the absolutely AWESOME alien raid on your homebase in xcom 1! this game is amazing, really apart from the overly frequent timed missions and the performance issues.

I like the timed missions, the last XCOM felt like a job sometimes, because you HAD to be overly careful, or you'd just get rekt. In XCOM 2, I now have to sometime sprint into a position i normally wouldnt and actually take risks.

The occasional timed mission is great for making you come up with something on the fly and take unusual risks, but the fact that so damn many of the missions are timed just really makes the whole game feel artificially challenging and forces you to make unsatisfying decisions.

Nice review! But try playing it with a low end graphic card, the game crashes on landing back to the ship. The rides back and forth are ten minutes long only to have your PC crash. It sucks when you complete a timed mission and you have to start over and the same PC crash happens again. The game is addicting and I love so many things about it. I just wish I could afford to upgrade my graphic car and ram. Again you did an awesome review Thank you!

I see a lot of hate for the timed missions but personally I see it as you are basically on a hostile world now and if you take to long the enemies main force will assault your small team and kill them it's basic gorilla warfare a small unit can not take its time once discovered they have to finish the mission and get out. I'm a huge fan of the XCom series since the Sega Genesis version. XCom Enemy Unknown was a solid title as was its expansion XCom Enemy Within. I even enjoyed The Bureau XCom Declassified which was a major departure for the XCom franchise. XCom 2 looks like another solid entry in the series minus the timed fights and limited rounds. Those 2 issues are going to piss some people for sure. Perhaps those were done to increase the difficulty and/or to emphasize the urgency of the missions. Having said that the game looks great, plays great and offers up an even greater challenge than its highly successful predecessor which was an already challenging game to begin with. I do look forward to buying this game. In regards to why XCom 2 is a PC only exclusive, there is some information regarding that. Firaxis had very ambitious goals regarding high fidelity character models and environments, better looking destruction, physically based rendering and something that couldn't be done with the predecessor: that being procedurally generated maps. As a result, Firaxis wanted to put all of its efforts and time onto one platform, the PC which is the area of expertise for the company. Also, Firaxis planned on launching the game without gamepad support although, they do plan on adding it sometime in the future. The decision to have a PC only release also means an interface that is mouse and keyboard friendly. The biggest feature that consoles couldn't handle is in regards to modding which is one of XCom 2's major strengths. Firaxis wouldn't rule out a PS4 or Xbox One release but its not something that they are discussing as of yet. It would be a difficult task if Firaxis decided to have all of XCom 2's features available across multiple platforms. They know their market obviously. They want to offer the best experience by focusing on one system only. Lets face it, PC exclusives are a rarity nowadays and XCom 2 is definitely a welcome one. pretty much. I have a GTX 980 graphics card and a i5 4960 prosessor (which is really good, above average) and I still get low fps in some parts. however i didnt use frame rate smoothing like this guy did. I got 60fps 92% of the time but the fact that it did drop down for like 4 seconds every so often means that average or shitty computers would have a very very very shitty time playing this. This is a very hard game to run for most pc rigs, even for some higher end rigs, so consoles really would need some tweaking either to the game or the console for it to even run.

This is a great game, I'm a bit less than 10 hours into it and I love it. And I appreciate the time missions and the global timer before game over. It gives a sense of urgency and really pushes you to plan your next turns very carefully almost like in a chess game and you got to anticipate the enemy reactions. For the performance issues, I got quite a high end machine and can run the game smoothly on High settings but you got to reduce the MXAA to 2x and not above or disable it. I also recognize that the screen freezes are annoying and should be patched. But this game is so good, so excellent, really!

so this game runs flawlessly on my 290x, fx8350, 16gb ram (clocked low atm) but when mxaa was at 8x ny default the game was u playable? why is that? I need to update drivers bc I just reformatted and am on default but can drivers really help THAT much anyway?

at mxaa 2 to 4 or fxaa it runs silky buttery smooth tho anyway. was curious if 8x mxaa is more for crossfire or high vram setups bc I know MXAA 4x, for example, like quintuples the resolution then downscales it but idk if that's the same as just playing on a 4k monitor where you need ~4gb vram. does mxaa require more vram like a 4k setup does? or even multi gpu?

Nice video, but I would have liked to see more information about the customization. Additionally, I want to add something to your sound topic. It's amazing how many different soldier voices they have. There's English, Aussie English, Scottish, German, French, Italian, Russian, American English, Spanish and a few more and every language has about 15 different versions of voices as well! That's a huge effort! Also you didn't say much about the story, the percent system in the gameplay, the different types of enemies, the different types of missions, procedural generated maps, different weapon types (proving ground and the other one), gameplay changes from xcom EU/ew to xcom 2 and how the early game compares to the middle and late game. The last point was extremely important for me, because xcom eu/ew had a boring late game where you could wait as long as you want until you make the last mission and you could get the best equipment for your team while nothing happened except a few shot down ufos.

I cannot describe all the details, but xcom 2 is fully customizable even the .ini files are fully open to changes. There is this part called the character pool where you can add in custom characters that can appear as troops, engineers, scientists, or any other npc that is not a enemy.

So the chances, it seems, are favorable of a mod coming out at some point to make missions untimed. Think I'll wait til around then to pick this up...there's bound to be sales by that time. This is a very difficult series though for a perfectionist who hates losing squad members. Imagine how long it took me to finish ME3.

Robert Jones on my personal experience on xone it runs stable with only a few lag spikes in intro cinematics and I enjoy the hell out of it

People seems to hate timed missions, but they are kinda needed. Becouse of concealment, you can now (and i did) use snipers from the other side of the map and the enemy will almost never find you. It also add some tension becouse overwatch traps are really strong now. I dont want to be mean, you can always mod it, but in my view, hating on timers is just ppl being a crybaby and dont actually know how to play. No offense though...

+Alex13501 ya no offensive taken. I can score a perfect with no deaths and obviously know how to play. So it doesn't make sense logically to say people are crybabies. Its probably more accurate to say people like different things.

hmq2007 Have you experienced it properly in PS-4 fully? I heard the load times are really bad and I just want to know from you that just how bad is it? and Please suggest hmq2007 on platform should I first play it PC or PS-4? Please reply with due consideration.

Yes, have played through the game on the PS4. PS4 load times have been improved with a patch that was just released. The bad load times only really showed up in the last 1/3 of the game and only the post mission briefing screen load was an issue. Of course the PC version has the benefit of mods.
