love this format John, being a lower rated player myself ( 1135 ), I found this video with your commentary most instructive. The trapping of the black knight on A4 by the white bishop on D4 was the coolest thing I've seen since Magnus check-mated Sergey with his queen sacrifice in the World Championship game.

The fact that Hutch saw that last move, which is a pretty subtle tactic of the kind you find in books, speaks a lot to how much he's been improving. Very impressed

Hey John, I remember reading a comment where you said that you weren't sure on this collaboration, but I'm glad you reconsidered! Hutch's chess videos were actually the reason I started playing a few years ago: he's even the reason I started by playing queen's pawn openings. I knew the basic rules, but absolutely nothing else: I started with an 18 match losing streak, and dropped to about a 600 rating! 2000 games or so later, and I'm up to 1500 partly because of your videos, especially the Climbing the Rating Ladder series: I jumped about 200 points at one stage after watching them. Brings a smile to my face seeing this :) BTW I really like the format! Not often you see someone kibitzing a relative novice, it's really insightful!

I don't think John had any problems hearing Hutch though, so apart from a bit back and forth with the technical issues, I guess John's recording of the analysis would be decent. I believe that some of the discussions were very instructive (especially for beginners), so imo it would be nice to include them.

Wow I'm impressed Hutch saw the last move too. John might giving a bit too much praise considering the missed mate and hanging pieces though lol
@RayyanKhanRayyanKhan7 жыл бұрын
while grabbing pawns is fine it's annoying when a player misses a mate, particularly forced ones - checkmate is the most important thing, if you have the opportunity to grab a queen but you also have mate in one then you should definitely go for the mate

What I loved about your videos with Hutch, is that you operated as a type of moral conscience... by asking him questions that he should answer about the position, in order to guide him... questions he should pose himself... I liked the approach alot and think that this type of "ghosting" is probably the best way to improve because it helps streamline the thought proces. Which to me seems to be the most important aspect of the game....

hey john, is a minor piece for a rook really winning? because even in grand master games they keep on continuing to play and sometimes even draw on such conditions. always found it difficult to win such endgames. In sharp middle games they might even be on a advantage.
@jono57447 жыл бұрын
Games can often be drawn in such cases when all other material is traded away. When there's still P's on the board, the R usually overpowers the minor piece enough to pass and promote a P. I think.
@srijan46227 жыл бұрын
yes but when there is one or 2 pawns left it get extremely difficult to win such end games, especially when there is a knight involved
@amazingwhiteman7 жыл бұрын
In that particular position it was completely winning. John wasn't speaking in general terms there. As others have pointed out, it is possible to sacrifice the exchange and be winning in other positions.
@aliturk66197 жыл бұрын
Srijan For no pawns, barring any unique features of a given position and with no compensation (king safety or activity, bishop pair, a VERY closed position (see Petrosian), heck even pawn structure) the exchange is winning every time
@AndrewIsbell7 жыл бұрын
The rook gets much, much stronger than a minor piece in an endgame. User "amazingwhiteman"'s comment is correct. Of course John is an International Master. At my level it's still anyone's game in that position.

Christian Francia chess.com have plenty of lessons and if you have time to study, you will get better no doubt. Hutch is great person, but kind a weak or average chess player - it's obvious for stronger players where he is doing wrong... John is right - "It's a lot of difference between ratings - 200-300 rating difference mean that stronger players are stronger not just in openings, tactics, or end game, but in any aspect of the game".
@Flammable2817 жыл бұрын
Yeah trading down when up on material is always a good thing. I can't tell you how many noobs tell me I don't know how to play chess because I always trade down when up in material if the position warrants it. One guy even banned me because of that so he wouldn't have to play me ever again on chess.com.

You finally got to play Chess with the famous gaming sex icon? Awesome!
@PreservationEnthusiast7 жыл бұрын
Why does everyone pay so much attention to "Hutch" Many of his games are absolutely terrible. No better than poor club level. Is it something to do with the fact he has got a large number of subscribers got through streaming games, nothing to do with chess, It's typical of You Tube, people caring little about quality and fawning over large numbers of subs. He even has grandmasters playing him, hoping no doubt to milk off some of his subs for their own channels!!! And sex icon, he is not, adorned with ridiculous tattoos and blowing out smoke.
@black_squall7 жыл бұрын
Everyone knows he is not a high level chess player. They watch him for entertainment. And you clearly don't have a sense of humour if you took the sex icon thing literally.
@nubbyv22797 жыл бұрын
heelfan1234 Hutch is a charismatic personality who is able to bring in a section of viewers who might not typically play or even know of chess. He is just trying to have fun with the game while showing others the joys of chess. His videos are to get people to play and watch chess; not to analyse the best moves. Like it or not, he is bringing in newcomers to a game that has a small fanbase and he is doing it in a fun way. If he can do that while simultaneously boosting the channels of other masters with people who want to learn more, why wouldn't either side jump at that chance?
@TheHomicidalTendency7 жыл бұрын
Sex icon is an inside joke, I'm sure there are many woman who follow him partly because they find him attractive and they also happen to love video games. People watch youtube videos for entertainment, and he is entertaining to the people who watch him (duh). Even John is very educational, but he is also entertaining or I wouldn't watch every video he puts out as soon as I notice them.
@PreservationEnthusiast7 жыл бұрын
+nubbyv2 His primary objective is to make money. He admits you tube is "just a job" in one of his blogs. Whatever other altruistic motives one wants to ascribe, nobody seems to grasp the number one reason for existence. If you want to understand You Tube, just start with money, and it will all click into place.

blenard, i can never be thankful to a video posted by an IM feauturing some D-player
@boceksiadam7 жыл бұрын
Advait Narayan In KZbin what counts is how big you're. His fanbase collide with most of popular chess master's fanbase. Once that fanbase demands a collab it's kinda best to go with it. Afaik John was never really into doing something with Hutch, but Hutch's fanbase keep bringing that up. Eventually Hutch td someone that he tried to reach John and couldn't get a response. At that point John either had to accept or decline it which would look awful. I personally don't hate this but if you do it's best for you to consider this a necessary evil.
@Cellkist7 жыл бұрын
The reason you watch videos from this channel is for John and his analysis. What does this video have? John and his analysis. If you're a fan of the channel, then the only reason to dislike this video is because you dislike Hutch, and that's childish.
