Thought they retconned at first but you can see one part of his soul going into the blade and another going to Shadowlands. We meet the soul fragment in the blade in Icecrown during WotLK and here we see the other part. Looks like something similar to Varian's soulsplit happened here where the two fragments take on different personalities as the fragment within the blade ended up forgiving Arthas and the part that went to Bastion was hellbent on revenge. That's why he couldn't ascend. The part of him that should've made it possible was missing.

Exactly what I was thinking. To add on this basis, I believe Ner'zhul created Death Knights from Paladins exactly of this reason - because some Paladins like Uther could not be completely consumed by the Lich King at all due to Light. Probably the Eredar that made Ner'zhul into Lich King knew this too. So unable to convert Paladins into his own he had to convert them into creatures of Vengeance, Death Knights.

Bro, Arthas, even the control of Nerzhul, willingly let himself be used as a weapon of destruction. He killed his father, destroyed his kingdom, doomed most of the population to the curse of undeath, used the ash urn of his father as a way to revive Kel'Thuzad, killed his teacher, and then wounded/stop a part of his soul. Even after that, he kept seeking more destruction. Ik that Arthas' issue is very complex but his lack of will to resist taking the easy way out to save his people led him down a path where Uther's decision is justified.

He made it personal, and you can't judge anything right when you make it personal - That's also the point with the Bastion and their teachings from what we know so far. This broken Uther and his paragon buddy are taking "justice" into their own hands, and dealing out judgement as they see fit from their personal point of view. Uther calls it "justice", but that's simply to excuse and justify his lust for vengeance. It's a very typical and human thing to do. You also see Uther struggling with the choice right before he drops him, but the paragon is seething with hate and urges him to throw Arthas into the Maw. She's kind of the Devil on his shoulder. The part of Uther struggling with condemning Arthas was basically the part that won out in the Uther trapped in Frostmourne; the part that chose to forgive and forget. Judgement was not for him to decide. The Uther in Frostmourne stayed true to the way of a Paladin of the Light, whilst the Uther in Bastion got screwed by his own Paragon and led on a path of vengeance.

The soul being split theory seems to make sense if you think about it. The soul trapped in Frostmourne learned over time that the Arthas that killed him wasn't truly himself, he was manipulated and basically mindcontrolled and Uther forgave Arthas. The soul that got sent to Bastion only knew that Arthas betrayed the kingdom and killed him. He was never inside Frostmourne and got to experience what really happened to Arthas. After Arthas dying you could say the soul merged with Uther, which is why he suddenly hesitates but Deimos gives Uther the push he needed to sway his judgement and cast Arthas into the Maw.

This video shows Uther the Lightbringer whispered to the light at the moment of his death. As his soul came out of his body, part of his soul was split and saved explicitly by the light because that half of soul was covered in golden yellow. None of the other souls we saw in game has a yellow color besides Valarjar 2) It’s not logical to say Sylvanas’s soul had also split. Even if she did, we don’t know if she will end up in the bastion out of the four covenants.

So they connected the consistency fairly well in this regard.

@@isawdavis When you die you normally go to a realm in the Shadowlands that closely represents your beliefs, for example most Druids go to Ardenweald, where they become animal spirits that aid in the eternal cycle of regrowth of the world, by tending to nature and animal spirits, Selfless people, heroes and justicars go to Bastion, where they forget their mortal lives to become passer for the dead, bringing souls from the mortal realm to the Shadowlands There's an infinite amount of realms in the Shadowlands, all tailored to specific people, but of course since this is a game we only have access to 5 I'm guessing Arthas felt heavy remorse upon his death, which should have sent him to Revendreth, a realm where souls go to atone for their sins to find peace by accepting them, but Devos and Uther snatched his soul at the moment of his death and threw him in the Maw instead, a realm of eternal darkness that is used to jail the worst of the worst, the unredeemable, the monsters of the world, basically condemning him to everlasting pain and suffering out of "Justice", hence why he sees "only darkness"

The worst part is that if Arthas had been brought to the Arbiter, he may not have been sent to the Maw. It was very likely, but he could've instead been sent to Revendreath or another realm that would've made him atone for his sins. That's the most heartbreaking thing, that they never even gave Arthas a chance at redemption, they just threw him away

I'm betting by the end he's going to be redeemed since pretty much all his evil acts were done under the influence of Frostmourne(except for betraying the mercenaries), and while he was Lich King the remnants of Arthas' consciousness actually held back the Scourge from obliterating Azeroth.

@@invictus7736 while frostmourn did control him for some time, he very much allowed himself to fall to it's control. He may be redeemed but he still had to answer for all he did, and all he ended up allowing frostmourn to do

Arthas was warned about the path he was following very early. There's some subtleties to what Kel'thuzad was saying to Arthas before Stratholme as well. Even before he took Frostmourne and "forfeited" Muradin's Life to even pick up the Runeblade.

@@TheChrysaora In this video he wasn't vengeful. Arthas was beyond forgiveness. This was retribution. He clearly had doubts at the end, so he was even still considering forgiveness, but decided that regardless of his feelings, Arthas deserved punishment.
