A guitar cover of Love by Gojira - with tab!
Tuning - D Standard
Another much requested Gojira song, Love, from Terra Incognita.
A slightly more challenging song from Gojira with some Death Metal influences. Things to watch out for are the large amount of tremolo picking in the first half and the pick slides in the second half. My advice is to commit to the pick slides to get them to ring out and don't be afraid of have slightly messy slides. In my opinion the more chaotic you can make the sounds the better!
Questions and comments below as always - I read them all!
Gear list:
Dean Cadillac Select - Ernie Ball 11-46 strings - UA-25EX audio interface - Logic Pro X

This video has really helped a lot. For awhile this has been one of my favorite Gojira tracks and Iv always wanted to learn it. This video helped me learn the whole thing! Except for the end I’m still working on that, pretty tricky but it has a good pattern to it. I’m sure if I keep working on it, I’ll get it. Thanks!

This couldn't have come at a better time, just started learning love the other day. What a fucking breakdown, is that a "horizontal" pickscrape you are doing? I can't seem to get it right! It's been driving me mental ever since I heard the song. Can you expand on how to recreate that noise? This might be my first ever youtube comment, but man your playing is always on fucking point, always a delight to see you upload.
@ShadowMantraSteve
@ShadowMantraSteve 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you 🤘 Yes it is horizontal scrapes. The main thing is to really dig in on the two lower strings to get it to grate against the coils of the wound strings and ring out. Try changing the angle of the pick to get it almost perpendicular to the strings. It does take a bit of experimenting to get it sounding similar to the record, but when you listen to live recordings they don't get it exactly like the record so I think it is more difficult to nail that it seems.

@@ShadowMantraSteve Thanks for the reply dude! I've gotten better at doing it, thanks for the tips! This song is such a blast to play along with, especially that part. Since my original comment I have bought a Bass, once I started learning the song on the bass too I realized part of that freakshow dynamic was also some bass shenanigans that I mistook as purely guitar sounds, laying both recordings on top of another and slowly trying to improve on my technique and phrasing on both instruments to master it.
@ShadowMantraSteve
@ShadowMantraSteve 4 жыл бұрын
Awesome to hear 🤘 it's definitely worth learning some bass and understanding how the two compliment each other. Quite a lot of a guitar tone on a record comes from how it interacts with the bass. Also they're just fun to play.

@@ShadowMantraSteve The first riff instead of 8th fret on the 6th string I do 3rd fret on the 5th string. On the tremolo riff I don't do the sliding up harmonics I think the first riff (intro) they play it with 8 instead of 3, because I remember seeing that on the Pol'And'Rock video. However, on the ORIGINAL MIX it sounds way similar doing third fret on the 5th string instead of 8th fret on the 6th string On the ORIGINAL MIX I can't feel the sliding up harmonics, where have you seen that
@ShadowMantraSteve
@ShadowMantraSteve 5 жыл бұрын
Fair enough with the 3rd fret. I've been mainly follow the Rock In Rio 2015 video and the Pol'and'Rock one too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4mteKyNea9qi80 I can't tell whats going on during the tremolo part on the original recording because the snare roll is so loud - some tabs show just constant picking on the 3rd fret 6th string, but the videos show them moving their hands down the neck of the guitar - 1.43 in the Rock in Rio vid I linked shows Joe move to around the 5-7th. I took a guessed that it might be harmonics rather that just palm muted fretted notes as they do love their harmonics. I think they probably play it live differently to the record though, adding and tweaking it over time.
@alexreid468
@alexreid468 4 жыл бұрын
@@iwillspam5985 i also play it differently but his version is pretty spot on! The first heavy riff i play the same pattern but go 3210 instead of 4543 and i think they just tremolo on the 5th fret for the snare roll part but i mainly play along to the album version and i know they really like to add little variations and changes when they play live. Im pretty sure we all play the song right just different versions that the band has played throughout the years 😎 and honestly that snare roll is so feckin loud you could probably play anything without it sounding too different lol

how to hell do I switch between the semi clean tone and the full distorted tone quickly? For distortion I use a pedal running through the clean channel on my marshall MG30fx, and I found the clean tone by just using the distortion channel on the marshall without the pedal, using the pedal in the distortion channel causes way too much bass noise, so how would I go about switching between the 2 tones? I really have no idea, would much apreciate help of anybody :)

The guitar was recorded DI. The plugin chain was TSE 808 > Le456 amp sim >LeCab2 Impulse loader with a combination of an impulse from the Gods Cab pack and a Diezel impulse. Then a few other bits like eq, touch of compression and a reverb bus to give it a bit of space. Hope that helps!
