If you look back to Senjumaru's Bankai we can see that she defeated Lille Barro by reflecting his own attacks. Similarly, Pernida was engulfed by black soil. Black soil in Japanese means Kurotsuchi. And Mayuri Kurotsuchi was the one who defeated Pernida in the end. So there's a theory that Senjumaru's Bankai is a reality weaving Bankai. Also Shunsui was told that he wouldn't run into the curse by hiding the sword anymore but that wasn't the case. He lost his mentor or father figure in Yamamoto, colleague in Unohana and a friend in Ukitake. Also there's a theory that this Shinken Hakkyoken is the sword used to dismember the Soul King. That's why Central 46 was quick to execute Nanao's mother.

To poke holes in the theory (personally I neither disbelieve nor believe in it since there isn't enough evidence one way or another for me to comfortably agree or disagree): Why was a minor noble house like the Ise entrusted with a god-slaying sword? If the Ise are the fifth family then why has this never been confirmed? Why not the Shihoin Clan, the Tenshi Heisōban (天賜兵装番, Guard of the Heavenly Gifted Armaments; Viz "Defender of the Realm"), the Caretakers of the Hōgu (宝具, Treasured Tools) and Bugu (武具, Armaments)? How did Shinken Hakkyōken become the hereditary blade of the Ise if it was the sword that was used to mutilate the Soul King? That act was performed by the Five Great Noble Houses so why would they give it to the Ise family? If they did give it to the Ise then how was it bound to them? Is the curse how it was bound to their bloodline and why they'd be trusted with it since it's such a huge downside that it doesn't become a potential threat to the more powerful noble houses for them to have the prestige of having a divine weapon? These are questions people need to ask themselves before they keep repeating this theory ad nauseum. If they can't come up with answers, actual answers, then they shouldn't state the theory to others. They also shouldn't argue with those who ask questions if they can't answer them calmly and logically. I point this out not to be a dick but because I'm tired of arguing with people about this that won't argue with logic and instead get upset and insult me for disagreeing with them.

I am glad you appreciated the characters and the backstory, because most of us back then thought the pacing felt kinda all over the place due to rushing schedules by Kubo. Both Shunsui and Nanao story never been fleshed out this much before, so it felt a lot of lore just straight dumped into this fight. But i think if you looked very closely, some little clues like interaction and things that made them that way are always been there. Also, TYBW finally explored Mayuri and Shunsui insecurities and being reflective about it. I loved we're finally getting Nemu and Nanao moments, getting their time to shine to support their captain.

I hope someone asks *Kubo* these questions and he answers in either a new arc in the upcoming continuation of the manga or he answers in a Klub Outside Q&A. Lille Barro's crazy death proof hax were overshadowed due to Shunsui and Nanao's beautiful yet tragic backstory, but he was a legitimate menace. And that makes Nanao's victory over him that much more sweeter after she admits to lacking combat experience. I love her self-reflection and support from Shunsui, and this moment overall was just done so beautifully in my eyes. She honestly became one of my top favorites in the series after this moment because of how grounded her emotions are. This might be a me thing, but I still think she was so phenomenal here (also, whenever there was a slice of life filler story in the old anime, she was either the star or the show stealer).

So, for the relationship explanation: Isuzu married Shunzan (Shunsui's brother), Shunzan died, and because Isuzu didn't bear any children, she returned to the Ise clan. Isuzu married some nobody in the family, the traditional way, like a Good Obedient Ise Daughter, and had a daughter. Isuzu realized that the Sacred Ise Mirror Sword was probably the conduit for the curse, so she contacted her ex-brother-in-law, who had promised his brother on his deathbed to protect his wife (the first hairpin), and gave him the sword and his pledge to keep that safe (the second hairpin). Isuzu was executed for "losing" the sacred item, and Nanao was sent to some remote arm of the house because of this Great Shame to the Family. Nanao joined the Gotei 13, and Shunsui took her in...whether because he wanted to protect her, because he wanted to make sure she had a choice to take the sword, or by sheer coincidence because the sword of fate called to her, we don't know. Probably the first option. Nanao figured out that he was the one who had the sword and understood why he was hiding it, and also fell in love with him. Nanao accepted the sword at last and confessed her feelings because she was ready to accept all that might happen as a result, and believed that the two of them could get through it. That's also the significance of him rising up to help her: it's the two of them breaking the Ise Curse together, or accepting that they'll always have each other, even if it's not in marriage. It's kind of complicated, but it's also Not That Complicated. Beautiful cursed priestess, lonely grizzled samurai.

[Tidbits] - We don't know if Shunsui is her uncle, Shunsui's brother was married to Nanao's Mother a long time ago, when Shunsui was a teen, which we know is long in regards to Shinigami years. - As mentioned before Lille’s Vollstandig design takes obvious visual elements from Seraphim (Biblical angels that act as gods spokesmen). This sort of second evolution is further proof of it, aside from having 8 wings, Seraphims are also often depicted as serpent-like creatures bathed in fire or red. (This isn’t 1 to 1, Kubo throws his own unique spin on it by using white instead of red and adding an owl-like face) - We learn here about Shunsui's struggle with death and responsibility, which adds to the sense of tragedy we often feel about his character. Even within this arc it happens again, Yamamoto and Jushiro died leaving him with even greater responsibilities. When you think about his actions, his willingness to do whatever is necessary, it makes much more sense now, for him he has to win because he carries those deaths and responsibilities with him as best as he can. (The concept of him sharing the burden of responsibility instead of taking it on all by himself was impressively expressed through his moment with Nanao) - Many fans often questioned the Nanao ancestral blade concept, feeling that it’s (understandably) overly convenient, and came completely out of the blue. but, as I’ll express again later, Kubo tends to have lore in mind long before it’s revealed. This is why Nanao wasn’t shown in fights, she doesn’t even have a named Zanpaktou and if you recall her moments in the Soul Society arc, she didn’t even carry a blade with her even when the restrictions were lifted (I.e In a story where the strength of the Zanpaktou is primarily how one's strength is judged, it’s obvious that Kubo not showing hers meant something was being set up. It’s more likely that Lille was made in part to delve into this plotline) - Sidenote: Additionally Nanao's last name is “Ise” which is likely in reference the famous Ise Shrine in Japan. It’s a landmark with deep historical and religious importance. - Sidenote 2: It was way back in April of 2007, Chapter 158 that we learn about Shunsui Hairpin and the Kimono from bonus pages in the manga. It’s only of note because many don’t know that Kubo tends to invent characters with tons of lore but he picks and chooses when to reveal it(sometimes he just keeps it tucked claiming “it’s a secret”). The Content covered here happens in chapter 652, a long way away from 158. - Sidenote 3: Another point to consider is that thus far every OG royal guard member has turned into or was some divine eldritch creature [Reposted]
