It's so disappointing that instead of adding new mechanics, interesting cases and other stuff, they simply released the game with minimal buggy changes and saying they won't update it's gameplay. I bet the community will make this game super fun but I'm still sad that the fans need to "take matter to their own hands" just to make the game interesting

Another cash grab lying game developer. What's new? He made more than he thought, kept promising new features for awhile so that people would keep purchasing the game then bailed when purchases came to a halt. Lots of indie devs do it, then they just go onto the next game under a different name

The other possibility is that the game needs a huge re-coding to add new mechanics, so they finished what they had and continue to a future project

On the plus side, the modding community pushed for basically getting a copy of the keys to the backdoor of SoD. With it now being 1.0, the sky is pretty much the limit with mods. It's quite possible some really fun gameplay comes out of it, even if the dev is "done"

True but at the end of the day its comes down to money. They barely made 250k in 6 years which after Unity fees, taxes, publishing costs. The developer would make more money doing a 9-5 job. Its a decent game that you can easily sink 20-30 hrs in before it becomes stale and its definitely an interesting game. Yeah that's what I am hoping happens is sure they don't have plans on adding content but rather adding modding support. Like the steam workshop. They are a small team so it makes sense they might not be able to continuously add features for years and years, but if they make it easy for modders and easy for people to install mods. SoD could last for a long while.

@@sicariau6436 Again not really look at their stats. Theres little spikes following updates but after 6 years of the grind to earn less than working a normal job. The hype train died down to a wagon speed. very niche game and in my opinion its a good game. A shame but understand decision from the dev team

I've been obsessed with the game over the past week, but half of my excitement was asuming that they would be continuously adding new content over the coming years. Honestly that's just sad. I was hoping for the interface update for the game and the whole rework of optimization. For a full release it is too buggy and unenjoyable to play. Movement became choppy for some reason. The body dragging mechanic is cool, but has no sense scince knocked-out citizen wakes up and goes through walls, so you can't even lock him up in a room or a wardrobe. Also, as you said, it it just too repetative. Players actions have no consequences, so you have no reason to play safe. The moment when you realise that makes you treat everyone and everything as just a buggy game and not a detective simulator.
@thatboywags
@thatboywags 2 ай бұрын
Haha I've been using the drag ability to throw NPCs off the side of the map 😂 Other than that though, I agree! I'm guessing it was mainly just added for the cover-up side jobs, but even then, it's still very buggy and weird.

The thing is, mods are usually things that only add new textures or color swaps. Mods rarely do the kind of things they do for, say, bethesda games. The reason why Bethesda games have such a massive modding scene is first of all an already established community that supports and trains each other, and also the engine which is so accesible for the modders to work with bethesda games these days are basically open source. I am not sure if Shadows of Doubt is nearly as accesible, even if a modder wants to add more to it, how far can they push it.

It's not unusual for small devs to get to the point where they could now start building the GAME itself, having made the engine, art style, mechanics... But they're already spent, or out of money, burnt out... And they release the framework for the game as the game.

Honestly heartbreaking that they barely gave it time to develop, comparing 1.0 to the early access release there's practically no difference. Early access is such a double edged sword, on the one hand it helps a lot of devs to refine their game and help it shine thanks to feedback and funding, but on the other it seems like a lot of devs just kind of use it as an excuse to make an incomplete game bring them some income before ditching it when they're satisfied with the earnings, using modders as a tool to finish the work they should have done in the first place. It's a really hard time to trust early access releases, I'm almost considering going cold turkey on em 😢
@thatboywags
@thatboywags 2 ай бұрын
Agreed. I love and hate early access for different reasons. I love being on the ground floor of a project and seeing it develop over time. But unfortunately a lot of games just don't see that much development in the long run. SoD still feels early access to me, and that's a problem.

The only 2 games I bought in early access were Dirt Rally, because it was made by a big name publisher and was actually laid out with a launch plan that they followed, and BeamNG because it's been 10 years with continual updates and I'm fine if they never update it again from what it currently is. I refuse to buy incomplete products as an "investment" on something which at best, my only return is the potentially completed game that I could buy when it fully launches.

Sad to say but this video's pretty accurate i have like 250 hours and in those ours although things were fun it did start to feel stale and missing a few things but i told myself that they fixed and add those stuff in the 1.0 release, and like to be honest, I think the game should have stayed in early access for just a while longer, like it feels like these a lot that seemed like they were gonna be added like cooking, improved sync disks, proper murder randomness, an actual difficulty system, and just a whole lot more of quality of life the game had potential in. I do suspect that the devs might have been getting a little sick and tired on working on this update or a harsh deadline but idk just glad you escaped being a one trick pony and played other games that we enjoy. :)

I didn’t realize the killer calling you was supposed to be an endgame thing. I’m playing on Very Long, but on my playthrough I never got an apartment (just had Sync Disk to not need sleep/get smelly/cold) so I didn’t have a phone. I was at someone apartment investigating a stolen item (ironically I had stolen an item from them they had stolen previously, but was not same item). As soon as I walked out the front door their phone rang, so I started walking back and one of the tenants hung it up. So I walk out, and rings again. After the 3rd time I finally decide to sprint and pick it up (leaving triggered it) and it was the killer. I’m not even the highest rank either.

Oh man, you are pretty much THE ambassador for this game. You're the reason I bought it (and I enjoy it); just the bugs are so immersion-breaking (I still have not had a single Ransom/Kidnapping case resolved with the perpetrator arrest counted, even though I arrest them). I really hope more for this game, perhaps there is still hope?

I hate to say it - but after you solve one case and know what you're doing. Man you've kinda solved them all. This is not a flex it's the truth. I solved every single case after except the first one without failure only one death. The first case was a triple case I didn't know what I was doing it was a sniper case. Problem with the game is, it's always repetitive to find the criminal even on a huge map (By this I mean sniper always spawns a certain way kind of deal, 90% chance their neighbor did the crime.) Idk, it's an amazing game but it's just not done yet. I would recommend it but with that big tag at the end of after 10 hours I can't imagine you'll be stirred much by it anymore. I played 35 hours cause I did enjoy it but I started making my own fun long before that.

I tried it in EA about a year ago but couldn't sink my teeth into it because I kept having bug cascades, like evidence spawning in walls, entries disappearing from the address book etc. A couple weeks ago I got the 1.0 version and while it's still janky and occasionally buggy, I happily spent approximately 40 hours in it so far. I'm loving the retro-futuristic Blader Runner-ish atmosphere of the game and I actually don't mind the routine nature of the work that much (most detective cases are fairly routine in real life), but I get your disappointment at the devs. What I'd really love to see apart from the more glaring issues being ironed out is stuff that provides more life-sim activities. It'd be nice for instance if there were things to do with your money (which there's a lot of after your first case unless you blow it all on renovating your free flophouse, I never get the vibe that I'm in financial trouble which is a recurring theme with private detectives) besides getting drunk in front of the TV. More fleshed out NPC interactions would be great. Perhaps if your actions had more lasting consequences, like pissing off the different factions with your meddling and them threatening you, eventually sending thugs or assassins after you, something like that. Make combat less anciliary. I suppose what I'm saying is this game should be turned into a voxelised version of Judgment (a Yakuza spin-off) but without the twatbracket protagonist, the borderline creepy dating stuff, a neo-noir city instead of present-day Tokyo and with the (procgen) detective work left intact and not taken out of my hands.

For me, one of the biggest features I wanted to see was a bit more personality. Variations and expansions on what you can ask NPCs. How they treat you, the phrasing they use, what they remember. I want the resident of 104 to remember I broke into their house and as a result refuse to speak to me.
@CATASTEROID934
@CATASTEROID934 13 күн бұрын
Yeah honestly my feelings exactly, as much as the game tries to ape the NPCs having complex lives with unknowable petty machinations they feel quite empty and inconsequential, everybody writes the same post-it note if they're being stalked, sends the same emails and have mostly the same characters, lexicons and mannerisms. For something leaning so heavily into scrutinising and learning about the NPCs you can find that once you've seen a few you've seen them all, and can memorise every individual there is in the city. It'd be a little more interesting if people came and went outside of you physically deleting them from existence by arresting them or them dying.

This video summed up my feelings on the game perfectly. I stumbled upon the game when it first came out to early access, and having read all the positive reviews of people's stories of solving cases and all the little things you can do to RP your detective life in the city was such a crazy unique concept. I guess that's where my disappointment with this 1.0 update comes from; the fact it's marginally different than when I first bought it, still feels just as unoptimized, and on top of that, they are done adding major content into the game.... I expected the finish product to have several other building types, the survival expects to be flushed out, and honestly just like double or even triple the amount of cases/sidejobs that were available. But not like minor variations of the SAME job like how it is in the game now. You said it best, it's a fun game for the money, and I thoroughly enjoyed the 120+ hours I sunk into it. But I think everyone was expecting a little more from this game, at least by the "full release".

I’m a new player and am enjoying the game a lot but I’m just at the beginning of my experience so everything is fresh. I would say it’s disappointing to hear the devs are done with this game, there’s so much potential to expand and add to this game. Adding different variants of serial killers is endless, and I think this game is perfect for a mode where a player can “invade” your game and become a random citizen and start a serial killing journey. Being able to communicate with the player by leaving messages at the scene, adds in the paper, phone calls. A true cat and mouse experience. Being the player/detective and watching how this other player evolves as a killer. Could of been fun.

Yeah, I am also really bummed about how SoD has failed to change during development. I got it for a friend who has played after 1.0, and his experience probably reflects most new players: Had lots of fun with the tutorial, tried to engage with side cases for SyncDisks while waiting for the next murder, got super bored because he didn't realize most side cases are borderline impossible until it was too late. SoD is a great case study into how nothing in your game matters if you can't establish a solid gameplay loop.

I waited to see maybe if the 1.0 was going to be some giant content patch they had hidden for a while and worked on in secret, but nope. Nothing really added or changed, just the same game now with a 1.0 on the front and enough to say "we did our job and are leaving now"

I was waiting for early access to end before I jumped in. I stay away from early access because they tend to be so buggy and sloppy. But that comes with the territory; it's being developed; you don't expect high quality. So when Shadows of Doubt was finally ready for release, I had great confidence in the game. And... oof. It took me 12 hours to finally get a world seed that actually worked and wasn't bugged in a way that allowed me to actually play for longer than a few hours without a murder glitching. That's a horrible feeling, to basically fight the game to make it work. But after all that, the game did work. And how did I feel? It was AWESOME. Literally one of the best games I ever played. So immersive, and intriguing. Even when a minor bug happened, none of it bothered me at all, because everything else worked at such a high quality, none of the little things mattered. I even extended the game length when I reached max social credit, because I wanted to keep going. How many games do I deliberately keep playing because I don't want the experience to end? Very few. But the bugs absolutely rob this game of the greatness it deserves. It's like the pizza delivery guy dropped the pizza on the ground, and it splattered all over the box. The pizza is still good, but it could have been so much better if they were just a little bit more careful. It's such a pity the devs don't want to keep developing the game. It has so much potential, they're right at the finish line, but it's almost like they're giving up. They rushed it to release, for reasons I will never understand, and it's like they just want to wash their hands of the whole affair. And that's just sad. Like a Olympic athlete giving up right before their gold-medal match. They had it in the bag. Alas.

At some point in my first case I couldn't progress anymore, I thought I was just stuck but then it seemed like I tried everything and my gamer sense was tingling - something probably wasn't working properly and some important step in the process simply didn't spawn or work as intended. So I thought "hey, it's Early Access, maybe it just needs more time in the oven". ...Well, "disappointing" is certainly the word for what I feel right now. I picked up the game after 1.0 but got it at half the price. Seeing gameplay from your channel and others, plus reviews, I got the feeling it's going to be repetitive. I've not got many hours in it yet and only done 2 murder cases, one being the tutorial one. But my first procedural one seemed to be one of the stalker types and for a couple hours I was stumped. Everywhere I went it led to a dead end. They killed again but still after another 30 mins, no leads. Then I went back to the second murder scene and I dunno if I missed it or because I moved the body slightly it appeared but I found crumpled paper with the cypher. I went to the address book and found the only name it could possibly be based on character count and letters used, went to their address and found the murder weapon. It was over just like that. I was looking for a detective game that had to make me think hard but so far this game just seems like, find fingerprint or note that leads to someone, find their address, visit address, see if they have murder weapon. Seems like there's very little thinking involved as far as doing detective work is concerned. I'd love to be able to question people and find leads that way and would be even better if things like motive were included. Just doesn't appear to be a way to deduce who did it.

I mean like even small things like the murder weapon being put in the trash or something and people telling you they saw them discard something (even if it seems far-fetched), just small details that wouldn't be too much to add to the already pretty broad procedurally generated nature of the game

I groan, because it seems like the developers are doing the exact same thing that quite a lot of indie developers do. There was soooooooo much they could've added or at least ironed out. Instead, they basically said "here you go, you do it", took the money from the exploding popularity at the start and dipped. I hate how they're basically leaving it up to modders to add the content they KNEW we wanted. Regardless, despite SoD getting me into your channel, I'm invested in your shit for the long haul now. I'm honestly interested in what other stories you can dig up from other games!

I think if they'd added something to give some kind of procedurally generated narrative for each city, or even for series of cases, it would have been much closer to a complete game. I'm in agreement that the main shortcoming is the repetitive nature of the cases and how little variety there is to them. Once you know how they work, that's it. I think having even a rudimentary plot of some kind linking the cases together might have gone a long way toward alleviating that. It could have made motive play a more important part in solving the cases, which is basically absent from the game at the moment.

I was really disappointed that they didn’t make an actual campaign with some more pre-defined cases at the very least. The backstory of the world seemed so interesting and unexplored and with a campaign they could have made something very top of the line…

I have just bought this game, about three days ago. Already I’ve sunk 14.5 hours into it. However. I went in believing the game was still in early access, not a single time did I think this game was finished. It feels like early access. From bugs like falling through the floor when placing a computer in an apartment, NPCs clipping through things, the kidnapping missions are incredibly bugged, etc. this game needs lots to feel polished and completed. As for content, it’s been great! Each case is samey, but just different enough to be incredibly enjoyable, and needing to think outside the box for a few of them. Such as a cultist murder, having to desperately search for a link between two victims and figure out who the killer was even with a lack of information. Or racing against the clock to find a kidnapped woman, and eventually resorting to breaking down doors. While some cases can be easy they are incredibly fun. The game feels in no way finished, but it’s also incredibly fun the way it currently is just very unpolished. I can’t say what more content I would like as I haven’t played for long, but I can see the currently available stuff getting very repetitive after a while. Honestly, the game is fantastic. It’s been a blast so far. But it really doesn’t have that level of polish a fully completed game needs to feel finished.

I would've loved to see a bunch of pre-made cases. I ADORED this game in EA but my favorite part was the pre-made case it came with; I spent about five hours on that one alone just trying everything I could. The procedurally generated ones are fun but just don't feel as interesting. It's sad that we're not getting much more. I don't really understand because I don't think I had ever seen an EA game go this far with the community (not to mention critics). It's an insanely complex game though so it wouldn't be surprising if adding even small things is a whole ordeal for the devs. And if that's the case, I can understand it.

Hey wags, been watching your vids since the "Double Murders" case you did and it got me so excited to play SOD on console. I loved the tutorial mission and the kidnapper case was great fun... but then the bugs happened and my immersion was broken. I found the kidnapped vicitim and freed them, then tried to talk to them to figure out who the criminal was. At which point, they attacked me because I was "Trespassing"... not the gratitude I hoped for. Oh and on 2 seperate occassions, I was on like the 10th or 12th floor of a building, fell through the floor and died 😢 The game has such solid potential and I have loved your videos on it. But you're right, its sad that its sort of peaked here. Hopefully bugs get fixed and hopefully they'll do what No Mans Sky has done and try to add to the game to continue the player loyalty. Otherwise thanks for the videos!

The saddest thing is, the game in its early alpha was way more interesting. The Dev back then had real detective work in the game, like morgue visits, more detailed interaction with the cops and better ideas for tools and cases. It feels like a downgrade in many ways. Also the game solves itself after a while, when you know everything and got basicly everyone prints from somewhere.
@balint9423
@balint9423 2 ай бұрын
I know I might get flak for saying this here, but here it goes. I just got into this game a week ago, while simultaniously binging on related content, and I'm immensly impressed by it. It revoultionises all detective games. I remember a time where you played Sherlock Holmes games and you had about 5 clues a scene and all pre written and you had 2 ways to connect the dots, one right and one wrong. And most of the gametime was spent on weird side dialog that wascotherwise cannon in some series and movies but not the books. In a game like this you need varied ending to plots which usually need to be written in advance. So essentially as a dev, you work on things that people won't see, which is often considered wasteful. Not just that but more delicate twists you put in, leads to more frustration from players who don't get it or think its stupid or just less clever than they would have. No wonder these games died out for 8-10 years. Then comes this beauty, completely revitalizing the genre by procedural generation. Tim Cain the creator of fallout said in many videos and interviews that the only way you can bridge the above "wastefulness" is procedural generation, and these people have done it. You get a breathing world which writes it's own tragedies. So far you only got these in Fantasy RPGs. I understand if you found this game a year ago and have been waiting for improvements for that long and they didn't come, it can be frustrating, while you also exhausted all content, but, as a new player, I feel like it needs to be said, this game is a miracle on it's own. Can you imagine what other games you can have with this technology normalised? I don't think It deserves the hate it's getting right now. Second, the code at this point must be an Italian Restaurant's worth of spagetti. I'm not surprised at the bugs at all (which they promised to fix in the future still). (Also to think of it, it's done in Unity I believe. After their downfall, probably they are looking to switch anyway, maybe.) As a fresh out the box, never heard of it before experience, it is well worth the price, even if you measure it by dollar per hour, and if you don't, there's still more content in there than I would have expected for something so radical in execution. I understand people saying that it didn't reach it's full potential, I can see that with the blood types for example. But I think the real potential is in the design and not the actual game. If anyone's watching this to determine, whether they should get into it or not, do it. Anyway, your videos are awesome and I learned a lot from them about the game. I'll still follow even if your narrating something different.

I’ll definitely check out some mods for the game though, just to see what they do in the game.

I can understand that. This game is so rich with potential that it hurts not seeing it being fully realised. I think for new players, it's more than worth the asking price as it is. I think that if its potential was fully realised, you could pay a full AAA price tag and it would still be considered a steal. I'm hoping we at least get more bug fixes, and maybe DLC to add more content, if that's the route that's required to help support it.

My opinion of this game can now be summarized with this phrase from the Green Goblin: “Strong enoght to have at all, too weak to take it” (PS: I want to believe that next year, the devs are going to release a Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 type update that will fix the game and add more content)

I saw that it was a 1.0 drop as opposed to just another patch and I definitely had mixed feelings, especially after loading up and finding that a lot of my earlier gripes were not fixed. I think some of what I (we?) would like to see for content do require some pretty core changes to the game itself though, which would essentially have necessitated a complete do-over. Is that actually correct? I don't know. But I wouldn't be surprised. I sure hope they get Workshop integration in. It never fails, I *always* forget to load up the mod launcher the first time I start the game.

In my Steam review of the EA release I made it clear that the game was good enough as-is and that I might not ever go back to it. I was working on the assumption that they released with such a miserable (but achievable) roadmap that it wouldn't change much when it hit 1.0. I played again recently and honestly it's the same game. Is it fun? Yes. But could it be WAY MORE FUN with a big budget? Also yes.

I love this game and used to brag about it and how cool it was to my friends, I was super early to this game & they all thought this game was the thing. Now at 1.0 The kidnapping case is bugged for me ( Even if I identify the kidnapper if they haven't killed anyone then it says I was wrong on who it was but marks everything else right.). What's worse is I still have room decorations clip, can't place items correctly, chairs fall though my apartment floor & I just... I'm so frustrated because this game was fantastic and it felt like things were slowly changing and then to hear they're pulling the cake out of the oven while it's still raw in the middle? Like sure yay cake, but if it had a bit more oven time and maybe some frosting I'd be more excited.

I think the reason this release was so sad is because the game really is good. Not just "it has potential" good. The issue lies in how little was done during early access. Plenty of people are loving the release, because there really is nothing like it, the same way we enjoyed it from the beginning of early access. It stands up fine on its own, but it can be so much more.

@@thatboywags the comments under this video say everything! The lack of effort, all the bugs, and then saying it’s done? It’s very weird - and like you said you coming from an experienced player not a coder, you can easily the lack of effort compared to when it first came out. Now from an aspiring coder, the people actually making the game don’t market it - so maybe there was some overselling when it was first released, maybe it was too ambitious, but i feel like they could’ve left out that it’s the “full” release

My only hope being that this game was going to continuously receive updates adding more and more content. There feels like it’s lacking so much content still. With features only being half realized in the game before adding another one they won’t commit to. Shadows of Doubt was easily the game I was most hyped to see where it’d go. Shame it’s done. I think i got 1 game out of like 10 attempts where I was able to solve more than 1 murder. This game is so riddled with bugs I dont understand how other people can play it at all as I usually encounter a soft lock in the first case where there are not enough clues, or another murder never happens, or the address given on the phone is blank because it doesn't load in and just says "Meet me at at 6:45" when the time is 6:42. Literally unplayable, and the one time I did solve like 4 cases in a single save game it was by using employee records and matching them with government ones to build full suspect profiles and I still eventually got soft locked. Great potential of a game ended up being kind of shallow and repetitive assuming you are lucky enough to have it work at all. This is still early access, its nowhere near done, and the Dev probably just got tired of this project. Devs who care enough about the game and their players will and have re-written the entire thing from scratch to allow the updates it needs, because rewriting with foresight of what the game is allows you to optimize on a deep level and make a masterpiece of a game.

Seriously doubt the devs on this will see the feedback and change their minds, sadly. As a side note, Deceive Inc has had some massive overhaul updates. Might be fun to see you go back and see what all has changed and possibly improved. The devs actually wanted to push away from the twitch shooter chaos and back towards the concept of a multiplayer vs spy game proper.

If i try to walk into that room i just fall through the floor etc that kind of thing. Performance is meh at best. Having all the same bugs you're mentioning, invisible npcs, cameras sending you into a white free cam style thing and others you didnt mention. Even as a newcomer i can see where you're coming from on this whole experience leaving a bitter taste in your mouth. I remember watching the old case videos before there was even news of a console port. Now that its here, and now that i know this is basically it though. Kinda sucks.
