@@devonsmith9519 [Technically Speaking] In the setting/world of Drakkenheim, ALL "wizards" are Sorcerers "who went to school" (the Amethyst Academy), or were not discovered by the Academy when young & got their knowledge by mentorship of a renegade Academy "wizard" [or their arcane notes & spellbooks]. . Rudy & all of her children have sorcery ancestry potential (she manifested a little of it). -> The "totally zero" magical capability of Wilhem sugests he is a Noble (both his father & mother "rotally pure" humans who can own Titles & Land under the restrictions of the "Edicts of Lumen"). Rudy probably learned her cantrips & Shield spell from a Veteran (soldier), who got it the same way in a long chain that cycles back to the original Elves "training" potential human sorcerers as wizards (who then offered that knowledge to aprentices who went to war, never getting a spellbook).

I enjoyed this episode thoroughly, but one thing I noticed was that when Monty was having the skulls use fireball...since the group was doing so well, they needed the challenge of two fireballs; so I'm fine with that. But he said he moved the fireball off grid so that it could hit all of them. DMG 251 says that if you're using a grid that an aoe spell must be cast on the edge of one of the grid corners and then measure the radius from there. This stops word of radiance from hitting 8 creatures and makes measuring more computable without bringing out rulers. Again, they deserved two fireballs to make the encounter a little harder, but rules were bent to do so.

I would be more or less generous depending on the spell. If you're using a third level spell you can definitely hit people on the radiuses edge. But if it's a cantrap I would allow it to hit a maximum of two people.
@pamitha6274
@pamitha6274 8 күн бұрын

@@SomeoneMysterious1352 Not trying to impose how someone "should" play the game (especially on a years-old comment) but Word of Radiance is mathematically very weak until you get about 3 targets, and it requires you to be within melee (with all of them) to do so. Very video game like. Honestly, tis a better use of the ability instead of using it as a Nuke. Fireball is already intentionally broken by every editions statement due it being Iconic along side Lightning Bolt and many other spells...

War and Rebellion for Rudi's Hand Axes? Heh... Cute, if on the nose. At least assuming I have the correct terms, Jill is using. So, Elven is akin to Japanese? More specifically, Kanji? Interesting.

It's a random encounter check. If a 1 is rolled by anyone enemies will appear, if a 6 is rolled, a clue or reward will be discovered.

Not that I know better than Monty, but at 1:07:00 - this is a moment when you want to implement the "Fail Forward" method. You can tell Monty asked for the roll from Jill, because he needed time to think about his answer and it's ramifications on the settings - often you'll want to ask for a roll to give you time to think, but then they roll a 4... on some info that would have been really cool for the players and DM to use. What I feel Monty should have said instead of "no you can't tell" - I would have told her "Though this seems foreign to you, as it's elven, and with burnt eyebrow hairs still getting in your ageing eyesight. You think perhaps if you were to clean up(hinting at her to cast presidigitation or something) you might search better. Does Rudy have certain skills you could describe that would help you here? Otherwise you can keep searching, it'll just take time and saves to not damage the machine" or whatever stuff like that. A no, even though it was kind and soft, sucks for everyone

How different would this story go if one of the pcs were an elf?
@ashleyhoughton8592
@ashleyhoughton8592 3 жыл бұрын
It seems like the elves erased their own history, or at least their knowledge of it. So a PC elf would still need to learn all this hidden elf lore.

@ashleyhoughton8592
@ashleyhoughton8592 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, though it might include a disclaimer about knowledge of Acadia. The book only focuses on the first campaign though, elf lore wasn't as important (though it seems the academy tower in drakkenheim might be part of this Elven network, it's not as much of a plot point in the city of Drakkenheim).

@@ashleyhoughton8592 that's a good point, I'm really looking forward to seeing the book, I'm already getting a party together but I can't ask them to start planning characters seriously until I've seen the creation options
@ashleyhoughton8592
@ashleyhoughton8592 3 жыл бұрын
@@esgeir9499 yeah they've already said they'll have custom backgrounds tying the characters to the setting. But also 'personal quests' where each characters story has a tie-in to the story (like Veo trying to find her father the steward, or Bruto knowing about a secret heir to the throne). So yeah, probably a lot easier to make a PC for a drakkenheim campaign when you can see the options.

Where were you guys? :D Awesome episode! Little suggestion: Im listening on spotify right now, and there is a very high noise when people talk. It's so high that anybody over 30 pobably can't hear it, but it's there and it's relatively loud. I don't know sound stuff that well, but i think a low-pass filter set to a high threshold would do it

Query: which campaign does everyone prefer? Dungeons or Shadows?
@devonsmith9519
@devonsmith9519 2 жыл бұрын
Don't think it matters much. If you've come this far, it means you likely enjoy both regardless of preference. Monty isn't a Super DM but he is earnest, and it shows. His players enjoy themselves alongside him and as a byproduct, creates something that is worth observing. As for preference, I do not think there is a massive leap in quality between either - they are roughly equal in terms for many aspects. So one is neither better or worse in some grand way. If anything, it shows that Monty found a niche that works, and he goes with it. At least for himself and his players.
