Rudy & all of her children have sorcery ancestry potential (she manifested a little of it). -> The "totally zero" magical capability of Wilhem sugests he is a Noble (both his father & mother "rotally pure" humans who can own Titles & Land under the restrictions of the "Edicts of Lumen"). Rudy probably learned her cantrips & Shield spell from a Veteran (soldier), who got it the same way in a long chain that cycles back to the original Elves "training" potential human sorcerers as wizards (who then offered that knowledge to aprentices who went to war, never getting a spellbook).

Not that I know better than Monty, but at 1:07:00 - this is a moment when you want to implement the "Fail Forward" method. You can tell Monty asked for the roll from Jill, because he needed time to think about his answer and it's ramifications on the settings - often you'll want to ask for a roll to give you time to think, but then they roll a 4... on some info that would have been really cool for the players and DM to use. What I feel Monty should have said instead of "no you can't tell" - I would have told her "Though this seems foreign to you, as it's elven, and with burnt eyebrow hairs still getting in your ageing eyesight. You think perhaps if you were to clean up(hinting at her to cast presidigitation or something) you might search better. Does Rudy have certain skills you could describe that would help you here? Otherwise you can keep searching, it'll just take time and saves to not damage the machine" or whatever stuff like that. A no, even though it was kind and soft, sucks for everyone

@WhatsAGoodName420693 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed this episode thoroughly, but one thing I noticed was that when Monty was having the skulls use fireball...since the group was doing so well, they needed the challenge of two fireballs; so I'm fine with that. But he said he moved the fireball off grid so that it could hit all of them. DMG 251 says that if you're using a grid that an aoe spell must be cast on the edge of one of the grid corners and then measure the radius from there. This stops word of radiance from hitting 8 creatures and makes measuring more computable without bringing out rulers. Again, they deserved two fireballs to make the encounter a little harder, but rules were bent to do so.
@DungeonDudes3 жыл бұрын
In our games, we use "true" measurements. The grid is used as a point of reference only.
@WhatsAGoodName420693 жыл бұрын
@@DungeonDudes Got it. I've tried that before. Are there a lot of problems you run into with this? Would you allow word of Radiance to hit 8 creatures surrounding someone?
@SomeoneMysterious13523 жыл бұрын
I would be more or less generous depending on the spell. If you're using a third level spell you can definitely hit people on the radiuses edge. But if it's a cantrap I would allow it to hit a maximum of two people.
@pamitha62744 ай бұрын
I know this is very long ago but Word of Radiance actually originates from you rather than being placed so it's a bad example. It can in fact hit 8 creatures within the rules. But the information on fireball is spot on!
@pamitha62744 ай бұрын
@@SomeoneMysterious1352 Not trying to impose how someone "should" play the game (especially on a years-old comment) but Word of Radiance is mathematically very weak until you get about 3 targets, and it requires you to be within melee (with all of them) to do so. @elementzero33793 ай бұрын
Ugh. I feel like the players/PCs are completely missing the point of the "empty" libraries and statues. From the tablets in the linked structure, the characters learned that House Eventide traded the elves' memories for the secrets of planar travel. They saved the elves, but lost everything they were. The being with whom they traded (Orcus or another Demon Lord?) not only stripped them of these memories, but left behind these painful reminders of their loss. It's very cruel and vindictive, and very much in character for the laughing version of Orcus we met in campaign one. "He Who Laughs Last," indeed.

@devonsmith95192 жыл бұрын
Don't think it matters much. If you've come this far, it means you likely enjoy both regardless of preference. Monty isn't a Super DM but he is earnest, and it shows. His players enjoy themselves alongside him and as a byproduct, creates something that is worth observing. As for preference, I do not think there is a massive leap in quality between either - they are roughly equal in terms for many aspects. So one is neither better or worse in some grand way. If anything, it shows that Monty found a niche that works, and he goes with it. At least for himself and his players.

What is he making them roll d6's for?

Monty uses player rolled d6s to determine random encounters and/or environmental/setting reaction chances.

They have a video called running random encounters on their DM playlist. It’s got a google doc that shows how they run their encounters and they use a d6 to see if one triggers. I have 5 players in my game so I use a D10. On a 1, bad things happen. On a 10, better things happen.

I don't remember which episode it was, but there was a great example back in season 1. When they were first trying to climb the castle walls before having the qualifications, they all rolled 1's, one of them said "what's the worst that could happen?" Monty's response? "This! This is the worst that could happen!"
