My favorite thing about Freddi Fish 4 is that, depending on where the 10 gallon hat spawns, the map itself changes. If Sheriff Shrimp is inside it, then that pink shark and the cave beyond it appears in the screen between the mailman and the hermit crab, with the road to the cabaret not appearing. But if its in the cabaret whale's mouth, then that area is instead the shipwreck, where Sheriff Shrimp is tied to a fan. It's a small detail, but still really cool nonetheless.

Freddi Fish is the only game where the main characters doesn't have a change in voice actors. But I loved watching the Humongous Entertainment games play-throughs on KZbin, and I have and played Spy Fox 3 when I was a young teen! I mean, yes I'm an adult, but who cares! The game stole my heart! I LOVED edutainment games AND point and click games! It's both fun and very nostalgic! Maybe you should do the Sam & Max game series in your next review, including the original and remastered seasons for the PC and game consoles!

I'm so excited to see this! Freddi Fish is very important to me as well. 3 was the first one I played, and I'm totally partial to that one, it's easily the most nostalgic. Some of my favorite things about these games aside from the soundtracks, the humor and Annette Toutanghi's pleasant voice are the memorable dynamic between Freddi and Luther, as well as the absolutely gorgeous underwater theming and extravagantly detailed background artwork. Seriously! These games were so beautiful. Plus, at a very young age my eyes had been graced by one of the most beautiful animated films ever made: The Little Mermaid before I played these, so these games reminded me a lot of that film. Good times all around, with memorable moments like collecting purple sea urchins, watching the weird little movies in the theater and being confused because my 5 year old self didn't get what was happening, and of course, rescuing Luther from the temple at the end of 3. Another highlight I HAVE to mention from 3: the little puzzle where you have to combine the clickpoints of the clam and the dogfish to eat the barricades blocking the tumble tubes. I was a dumb kid so the solution didn't occur to me until one of my parents pointed it out. Even still, that absolutely blew my mind! The fact that two clickpoint animations could work together like that. Amazing learning experience that could challenge a young mind without talking down to them. I don't think I'll ever really get over HE's games, they truly were works of art. Oh and love the shout-outs to Sesame Street and Blue's Clues. The greatest kid's shows ever made!
@coopercane50019 күн бұрын
The same way you hold Freddi Fish 1 in such high regard, so do I for 2. It was my first Humongous game, and the only Freddi Fish title I owned as a kid. The stakes might be lower than its predecessor, but I always likened the story to a Scooby-Doo mystery. The villain disguised as a supernatural creature, the team putting together an elaborate trap to catch them, the unmasking of the obvious culprit, and them remarking that they would’ve gotten away with it if it weren’t for those meddling kids. The theater and crab game were some of my favorite parts as well. In fact, the trap Freddi and Luther make fascinated me as a kid. For a while, I wanted to be an inventor when I grew up. I wanted to make all sorts of crazy contraptions. It was because of that game, the inventions in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Doc’s Time Machine in Back to the Future, and the board game Mouse Trap. While I do acknowledge the later games are better, though I feel 5 was a step backwards given the lack of multiple suspects and less pathways, Freddi Fish 2 will always have a special place in my heart just as 1 will for you.

It wasn't until I was, like, 17 that I realized Freddie Fish was a girl. Yeah, no joke. In my defense, Freddie isn’t exactly a very feminine name (and it’s not one of the more common unisex names like Alex or Sam or Kris), there’s almost no moments when they ever apply any pronouns to Freddie, the design doesn’t give much away, and the voice could easily be passed off as a female VA doing the voice for a young boy like Veronica Taylor or Nancy Cartwright. So, you understand my confusion and surprise.

Freddi Fish was the bomb. I feel like whoever worked on Monkey Island, and also worked on these was scratching an itch. Monkey Island games had a few underwater segments but the art and colors of those segments closely resembles Freddi Fish 1. And same with the steel drums and slide guitars, those were in MI3! EDIT: Also I'm totally gonna defend Freddi Fish 2 (as that was the one I owned as a kid) and say the schoolhouse setting was fantastic. Especially as a first-time player. It felt more like a fun little clubhouse or treehouse, very snuggly and comfy. It was the equivalent of a hero leaving their home to go on an adventure. And it worked because the schoolhouse was so warm and friendly and familiar, whereas all the other environments (while cool as hell, submarine room especially) were very dark and/or unfamiliar. EDIT2: At 45:36 they threw in a Guybrush Threepwood reference!
@VynalDerp11 ай бұрын
Strongly agree with your opinion on FF2, as a kid I absolutely loved messing around the schoolhouse. I was in school at the time and honestly, I can't really describe how much I enjoyed pretending I was a fish going to fish school with Freddi or being apart of Freddi's school. It did genuinely kinda remind me of a hero's hideout, often when there was a scary part of the game (like the submarine), I would retreat to the schoolhouse to feel calm & secure with the big and friendly teacher there as well as with all of the school friends. I also really, really like submarines and submarine history, while simultaniously being fairly scared of them IRL and you wouldn't catch me dead on one. Weird paradox, maybe FF2 is to blame?

I am sorry to hear about your fear of the ocean, I did find the idea of being afraid of the characters in this game kinda funny. While Freddi Fish 1 isn't my favorite of the series, the background art is amazing. The volcano being my favorite. I also love the darker vibe. The sunken ship section scared me as a kid lol. Funny recalling the stories of having your dad help you in these games. Whenever I got stuck, I would consult my parents to see if they knew what to do. I remember them sometimes getting so invested in trying to figure it out that they'd get more frustrated than I was. It's funny how people thought Freddi was a girl. I always knew Freddi was a girl... but I thought Putt-Putt was a girl lol. Freddi Fish 3 is my favorite of the series. The path variety, music and characters are my favorite of the series. Freddi Fish 4 is a close 2nd for me. The music being the standout. I like Freddi Fish 5 but it just feels lacking. Kind of... cheaper? But not as cheap as the Atari games. The demos were my first introduction to Freddi Fish. Freddi Fish 2 and Freddi Fish 3 demos were on Pajama Sam 2 so I played those a lot. Freddi Fish 2 being my favorite of the 2 demos because, like you said, Freddi Fish 3's demo is laughable. Really digging these retrospectives!

Another great retrospective! I'm slowly going through them and thoroughly enjoying them. When I got my first computer when I was around 6 or 7 , which was a hand-me down from my much older cousin who gave me her old one because she bought it new one, the first computer games my parents bought me was Freddi Fish 3 and Freddi Fish's One-Stop-Fun shop. So I hold Freddi Fish 3 very dear to me and it's what opened my world to Humongous Entertainment! It was very much a bonding activity too because when I got stuck on puzzles like you I'd ask my dad for help and he'd be happily trying to figure out a solution for me. For the longest time I had so much trouble getting that final golden pipe from that clam and couldn't finish the game, but he helped me to give that tourist guy the foreign language phrasebook and use that device to hold it open. My favorite fact about Freddi Fish comes from a video interview from "Stemmen van Toen" with the Dutch-language voice actors from Freddi Fish. There were two voice actors for the entire Dutch-language cast of Freddi Fish 1, because the producer wanted to cheapen out for voice acting; and they were the only ones available at the time who could do lots of voices. -- From the interview, it is not clear to me if the producer that made the choice here was Humongous itself, or Transposia; the latter who released a lot of translated point-and-click children's games in Belgium and the Netherlands in its time. Both voice actors came from Belgium, and were asked to speak with a more Netherlands Dutch timbre as it would be released for both The Netherlands as Belgium. Kinda like asking a New Jersey actor to speak more like a Midwest accent. One of the sharks, the English Spongehead, was voiced after a Belgian socialist politician, Bert Anciaux, who according to the voice actor you had to fully open your eyes to talk in his timbre, and then had to slow down your voice a lot. The other shark was voiced after Bert and Earnie, very nasal. Mr. Starfish, who taught mathematics in Freddi Fish, was also voiced after a politician, Louis Tobback. A popular politician and long-time mayor of university town Leuven. Fitting for a mathemetics teacher! -- Also some lines were revised from the translation script as the literal translation given was not something Louis Tobback would say. But all in all, most of the script is unchanged from English. Both Dutch-language voice actors do not know whether Freddi Fish is a boy or a girl.

Freddi Fish was my first exposure to Humongous Entertainment and by far it’s the one I have the most nostalgia for. -Weirdly I think Freddi Fish 1 is too dark-I mean the settings are just a little bit underlit compared to the other games. It’s also the game that used to scare me the most as a kid: the junkyard dog, the “this place is scary”, Eddie the eel and the caves being dark all freaked out 5 year old me. I think it’s also one of the only games where you can collect items even if they don’t have a specific usage for that playthrough (like you can always get the glowing shell even if you don’t need to use it). Also I used to think the SquidFather’s name was “SquidBother” cause of the way Spongehead said it. -Freddi Fish 2 I have the most nostalgia for because it was my first one, I loved the pulley songs Barnacle Bob sang, the little bit where Luther has to get Casey’s glasses, the fun click animation in the coat room where fish ate the jackets, and who could forget the WORM DOODLES commercial? I also love in the tide pools the crab and starfish animations, and if you clicked on them together they’d dance with each other. -Freddi 3 I never owned as a kid, or if I did I must’ve broken the CD because I never got to the end of it until much later. But I love the tropical music, the setting, the awesome musing room and the Terrific Tumble tubes. It was also the first game to utilize the click animations for a puzzle: needing to use a clam to cut the leash off a dogfish to proceed! Also it took me such a long time to figure out how to get the flashlight-how was I supposed to know to use the mirror on the bully? -Freddi 4 is the best one: fun setting, lots of variety in the world and puzzles and just so many memorable characters. I didn’t know as a kid that you could catch the soda as it slid across the table and my kid self was so impressed when I figured it out and Luther caught it and they could finally have their drink! I also learned what Lemongrass and Cayenne are, spices I use to this day! -Freddi 5 was also great despite having the stink of Infrogrames on it, the side scrolling nature was pretty fun and I loved exploring the park and the town. The ending part with Marty’s house was also cool for my young self to figure out although that is a pretty complicated lock system xD So yeah, Freddi is one of my favorite games of my youth and I love HE for giving me such a great childhood.
@james_fisch Жыл бұрын
late to respond, but Freddi Fish 2 was my introduction to HE and the Freddi Fish franchise too. Until this week, I hadn't played the game in over 20 years, and figured I had forgotten about everything from it. As soon as I replayed it, everything came rushing back to where my head was at 3 or 4 years old from the music to the voice lines. To this day, I'd argue it's my favorite of the franchise based on the nostalgia factor. Freddi Fish 1 is probably what planted the morbid side of my curiosity due to its dark setting being apart from other games, and I think at the same time watching Brave Little Toaster a lot at that age added to it. I didn't really think of that until this week either for the former. I'm sorta amazed they kept lines in there like "all the fish will die." I liked 3 and 4 a lot as a kid, 5 was my least favorite but it was still good and I was excited for whenever the next game would come. I had no idea that experience I had picking the game up at Walmart would be the only time I'd get to have that as I think I was 6 or 7, thinking Freddi Fish 6 would be coming out anytime after that point. It's a shame HE went under not long after.
@Mezcon29 ай бұрын
Oh my gosh!! I must be close to the same age as you, because this was also my first click adventure game ever as a kid, and I feel so much nostalgia for it. What I really admired about the game was the rich colorful background art mixed with the music. Sometimes I would pause playing the game just to enjoy the atmosphere. I think the only other game I ever did that on was Spyro the Dragon. Btw, learning Freddie was actually a girl blows my mind, as up until now, I always thought Freddie was a boy. : /

Time to be a pointdexter and point out that there are whales that have more traditional teeth instead of bristles (which are called baleen btw), like Sperm whales and Orcas, and are appropriately called toothed whales. Granted, none of them have close together cylindrical molar like teeth the way the whale in this game or similarly Monstro, the whale from Disney's Pinocchio, instead looking more like a bunch of spaced out long conic canine like ones, but still, not all whales filter small fishes and krill from the water to feed.

That's awesome! Yeah definitely give the 4th and 5th game a shot, I've been in the mood to play through them all again lately! Can never go wrong with a good dose of nostalgia for old Humongous games haha!

Everyone has two grandmothers: one from the father's side and one from the mother's side. Luther and Freddi could still be cousins if they share one grandmother while each of their other grandmothers are unrelated.

Its really funny how you regard 2 as the worst one but its my favorite game because it was the only one i had access to as a kid, i haven't really played any of the other ones. I really loved the theater and the drawing in the classroom. I feel like i may have liked the other ones if i played them too. Edit: Upon watching further, i did have Freddi 5, the scenes look familiar but im not sure if i ever finished it for whatever reason

Never played the smaller games, but I loved playing the first four main ones. The third might've been my favorite of the set based on the colorful environment of the location, crazy contraptions like the pipes and piano, and the final stage in the Aztec or Mayan-esque temple. I never played the fifth game since I outgrew most of the Humongous games by the time it was released, although I remember my little brother playing it. I'll admit the MS-DOS prototype of the first game looks intriguing, but I'm still glad we got the version of Freddi Fish that we did. And seriously, what was up with that secret scene of the eel eating poor Luther?

Even though I played the first two games the most as a kid, I did enjoy the later Freddi Fish games more because of the puzzles. Freddi Fish 3 is my favorite due to the tropical theming and how the culprit isn't the same character each time.

I got into arguments with people over Freddi being a girl 😂 I don't remember the scene even though I played 2 but I knew from the voice. Then people were like "Really? Freddy? That's a girl's name?" And I didn't know what to say. 😂 Loved Powerpuff Girls and Freddi Fish though so I get that stigma.

Interestingly, I never had a problem with female characters when I was young. It was first when I started to get a bit older and was consistently berated and condemned for the inherent sexism and misogyny that apparently all males possess, that I started to develop a distaste for female characters. Not so much due to a dislike of the character in of themselves, but more so thanks to the perceived connection they appeared to have to the people or groups that castigated and denounced me for things I've never actually done or thought.
@RoninCatholic3 жыл бұрын
That was exactly my experience too. That and great exasperation that every time a game would give any mechanical differentiation to male and female characters, it always favored the female characters over the males and people would _still_ scream to the high heavens about how it was somehow misogynist...

Honestly, the whole "Nobody liked girls in games" thing feels like gaslighting. With characters like Samus Aran, Freddie Fish, Lara Croft, Dixie Kong, Coco Bandicoot, Amy Rose, Roll, Inspector Fox, Princess Peach, Tron Bonne, Chun Li, many MANY Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem characters, etc, there were a whole host of popular female characters back in the day.

@@Cyberguy64 It's more or less advertising experts gaslighting themselves into alienating their audience. Same reason toys made for girls even of characters who aren't colored/wearing pink will often be changed to pink for the toy aisle.

@@Cyberguy64 Exactly how I feel as someone who was a little girl growing up in the 2000s. When I first heard as a teenager about the whole video games are sexist nonsense I had no idea what those people were on.
@Phatnaru00022 жыл бұрын
Same experience here. In fact, while I was watching this video even, I thought it was cool that Freddi was a girl. But the second I heard that it was an intentional ideological decision to influence kids, it completely soured me to the idea. As long as it makes sense, kids won't care what gender the character is. They are not as hung up on it as adults are. And no, the girls did not light up and the boys shut down because Freddi was a girl and they liked or disliked it. The girls lit up and the boys shut down, because you framed Freddi as a boy and then subverted their expectations. If you framed Freddi as a girl from the beginning they would have had no reaction. If you framed a character as a girl, and then reveal they are a boy, you'll see the opposite reaction among small children. My sisters never felt dissapointed about playing as Link in Zelda. Likewise, I didn't feel down about picking girl characters. In fact, I often specifically picked girl characters when I had a choice, because I liked girls and wanted to see more of them and learn more about them.

oh gawd what the heck did they do to Grandma Grouper in Freddi Fish 5!?!? Thats not even the same Grandma I remember from the 1st game! It's like a evil clone fish pretending to be our Grandma Grouper! If there's anything I've learn when it comes to selling pre-school kids games released on the Nintendo is that Nintendo has questionable green lite idea's releasing for their consoles aimed for pre-schoolers and that all pre-schooler games aimed at Nintendo are garbage 100%. Compare to how any kid around certain ages can handle being on a computer given most games aimed for them is not asking them to do complicated stuff that would damaged or set the mother hardware on fire. Having kids, 3-5, playing on any videogame console or handheld i'd be concern and worried since not all kids at that young age will have the mindset to be very careful with the handheld/console should they get mad and decided to toss it at a wall. Once again, I am stun to learn that Blues is a female puppy. Honestly after I stopped watching the show, and being told them showing a pink dog similar to Blue, I'd honestly thought the Pink dog was the female dog and Blue was for a long time, a male dog. I can barely remember if Steve ever called Blue a she during his time when he was on. You learn something new.
