Andrew! Thanks for this video. I sold Cadillacs for 14 years. And the dealership always wanted me to rip heads and I refused to do it. When I was a Green-pea, I didn't know any better. But when I completely learned that it was easier for me to tell the truth I stayed to my guns.. I had one customer that straight asked me, Was this the best deal I could give her on this Escalade? And I replied NO, It's not the best deal I could give her but It is the fairest deal. Meaning you have a payment that you are comfortable with and I can make a little money on the deal. She looked at her husband, then back at me and then asked, Where do I sign? That family became a 4- time repeat customer too. Sorry for being so long, I just wanted to share the story with you.. Great Info...I'm a fan of this channel.

I always walk away and tell them to call me when they are ready to give me the price I have said I am willing to pay. They always call me back and I go back and get the deal I wanted. You have to walk away, even if they have kept you there for 5 hours. Just walk out to your car and leave. I usually get the call back from the Sales Manager within 30 minutes.
@mikeh22914 жыл бұрын
I feel like I just heard an echo. Very true, you do not get the best deal until you walk out the door. I had a car salesman knocking on my window as I was about to drive away. Now that was fun.

After a year of researching and shopping, found our RV travel Trailer we loved. In that year, NEVER had high pressure sales, no hot dogs or balloons like you described. 98% of the sales people we talked too, asked what we were looking for, directed us to the units they had that fit our needs, and backed off so we could look and talk. Only a couple sales people were kinda pushing but not like at car dealerships. Finally, at Family RV found our RV, salesman helpful, no bait and switch, gave good price up front, then after some talking came down more (was sure they had wiggle room). Within 45 minutes, done deal and was and still happy. Old saying goes, Buyer Beware . . . . look,. . . . Listen . . . and if the pressure is applied, say thank you and leave.
@RVingwithAndrewSteele5 жыл бұрын
There is not nearly as much money on the table for travel trailers so I could see why the sharks aren't swimming in that pool. A top-of-the-line travel trailer is less expensive than a luxury car these days. in my negotiations, we're talkin about wiggle room that are multiple travel trailers. I do see RV shows every weekend where they have all of the travel trailers and lined up at the University of Phoenix stadium. Not sure what else they could do to try to hype the experience. Where did you purchase your travel trailer?

Theres an old poker saying that holds true in many ways other than poker. If you look around the table and you cant spot the sucker, it’s likely you! Research and preparation are huge, if you know the relative value of a product you can’t get screwed too bad. If you rely on salesman integrity.... you WILL get screwed

Very interesting to hear your perspective. Our strategy was to first visit a dealership in another city to get an idea of what we wanted and to establish a base line price. We figured they would have to offer a good price to get us to purchase a coach so far away from home. The price was for a custom build so when we went to our local dealership we simply laid a copy of the order sheet on a salesman's desk and negotiated from there. We offered cash and pickup the week it was delivered so there was no carrying cost or insurance costs for them. Basically they received their money the day it was ready for pickup. We had to walk away as well but they accepted our price after 3 or 4 days. I guess if both parties walk away happy with the deal if there really a problem?

Thanks for the information Andrew my apologies for not seeing this sooner but you make great points about the paint protection and tie rods . Here’s my point as a retired truck driver and owner (almost 40 years of driving and over 3 million miles) I’ve had 3 steer tires go flat while driving a person will have more chances of a flat on rear tires and for paint protection and I know you know this one there is none all front ends will get small stone chips a little sand blasting as the miles rack up on the vehicle so keep the front end clean and a person can apply some good wax and it will help and get a professional detailer like you do do a bang up job every now and again

You are spot on my friend. They also leave out special license requirements and rush you through the walk through. I've even been sold Tiron ($2400) only to find recently a dealer never installed it nor left me tools in case of a drive tire flat. (These systems are legitimate for safety if properly installed or installed at all)

Very well done vid on the psychology of sales. If they were losing money on extended warranties, sealers, VIN etching etc. they wouldn't push them so hard. The finance manager is often the slickest sales person, the closer to squeeze you as dry as possible. I'm not saying they're all bad they have a job to do. I once had one say I'm not going to try to sell you anything, after I waited for hours at a busy end of the month annual manufacturer sale. I Always respected his honesty and not wasting our time.

We have had 2 RV's in the last 12 years. Luckily, I did some research before making the purchase. First, we wanted a fifth wheel. I bought a used F250 diesel and we went to several rv lots. I would ask the salesperson the hitch weights of the coaches. 100% of the time was - it doesn't make any difference, your truck can handle anything. So I had my pickup weighed and we purchased the appropriate trailer. Next we wanted a class a diesel pusher. Never did the salespeople mention that al least where we live in California, you need a special license if the coach is over 40' in length. Also the never mentioned that you need a special license endorsement of your trailer is over a certain weight. I am so glad I did some research before purchasing either.

Negotiations were done over the phone which worked out great. Good to do the homework on the coach before hand. A friends dad got an extended warranty on a new RV. Guess what day the extended warranty started? Not on the day the original warranty would have ended. They screwed up the paperwork and his extended warranty started the day he bought his coach. He took it in to get warranty work done after his original warranty expired and they refused to do any warranty work.

Hi Andrew, this was very helpful, reminding me about buying cars is just the same in the RV world. I found an RV in Texas and I asked if the dealership in Washington state can match or beat the price. At first they didnt budge at 156,000 then I shopped on the internet and found the same brand at 111,000 but missing a bike rack that's it. So now I'm waiting what price my dealer here in WA state will meet or beat the price. I got a text a few hours later, didnt give me a price only said they could come close. So I asked again , how much? They havent answered only when can you get your down payment... so now still waiting but like you said I'll prolly fly to Texas for the rig... TY

Bought a used 2012 Tiffin Allegro Red qra with 30,000 mi. for $146,000 minus $20,000 for our 99 Winnebago Suncruiser diesel pusher, Got the dealer warranty also. An ok deal. The Michelin tires had sidewall cracking so the dealer agreed to pay half of the $3800 for new Toyos. The Tyron system was on the fronts and I didn't have the special tool so Les Schwab had to cut the connection to get them off. So we have been pretty satisfied with B. Young RV so far. At 12:48 you said the salesman should "have more respect for people than that"... well they don't because they know if not you then some other poor slub will walk in and agree to having the price jacked up on them! As an Accountant and Financial Analyst I routinely took my financial calculator with me and pulled it out in front of the car salesmen and would tell them I know when you're jerking me around with Time Value of Money changes to maximize their profit. In one case I walked off the lot, with wife and kids (knowing my kids drove the salesmen nuts *evil grin*) and on our drive home they had called my home to say I could have the deal I originally wanted, and upon returning to the dealer the following Monday to sign papers learned the new car salesman, fresh from the insurance industry, had quit his job because of all the lying he was exposed to on my car purchase deal! True story!

When we bought our current RV, we had to have it ordered. When we sat down with the salesman to fill out the options for the build, they pulled out a n options sheet that had the manufacturers name on the header, all the options, and the price for each option. I enquirer about a specific option and the salesman said he had to check with his boss. He got up and walked away. Since we were at a show, the manufacturer’s rep was standing nearby so I went to ask him. He pulled out the same option sheet and said “let’s look.” His option sheet was the same one the dealer was using except, the dealer had marked up all the options by 30%. They had reproduced the option sheet with the markup. Needless to say , when the salesman came back he had a lot of explaining to do. We got the coach with the options we wanted at the price off the manufacturers option sheet. I’m sure this is a standard practice to pad the profit without the buyer having a clue. Had the rep not been there, we’d have never known.

I usually tell them to bring the manager over so we can negotiate direct. Last car purchase they had internet pricing on the base and midlevel trim with all the fine print, taxes registration DOC and title fees. Said I want to look at both and see the internet deal out the door price on both. Base was 1000 higher and mid level trimmed 3200 dollars higher then internet price. I said ok you cannot get your own deal correct I will write my own deal which had out the door price with note that it was same for finance or check. By the way my price did not include DOC and title fee plus was 500 less then internet price. They finally figured my price was lower than internet and did not include DOC. I said that is what I am willing to buy for. I said you guys are professionals and should know if you can sell it for that. I said if not that is good as we can say goodbye. I stood up started for the door. They said give us 5 minutes. Salesman came back and said manager will sell it for that but he has to put 75 dollars of his own money towards the deal. I said ok finish the paperwork. Wife said to me you should pay the 75 so the manager does not have to take it out of his pocket. Salesman smiles. I said do you really believe the salesman. I said to wife and salesman then let us not do the deal to save the sales manager 75 dollars. It was fun to see the smile fade from the salesman's face. We bought the car without the extra 75. Poor sales manger NOT. I think my lovely wife understands the real picture now. Andrew your video helped her see the reality. Thanks

Awhile back, I woke up to no hot water. I knew no one in the business. My wife said there will be hot water by the end of the day. I said baby, let’s tough this out till I can do a little research. She replied if I wanted anything hot for awhile, there would be hot water by the end of the day. $1800 later, there was hot water by the end of the day. In conversation later with a buddy, I found out I could’ve gotten it done for less than a grand. Situations like this are the only time I say screw it, it’s just money. Only a front tire blowout generally results in loss of control. The odds of that happening is only about 20% and properly maintained ones less than 1%. Many states only require permission of one of the individuals being recorded so I have a personal recording device that looks like a pen. Great question but really tough to say. it's more about knowing that whatever you get, is going to have problems and having a plan on how to address those problems. If you live close to Indiana, Newmar, if you live close to Alabama, tiffin, if you live close to Iowa Winnebago. just know that the dealerships do not service these coaches and plan on having to go back to the factory for warranty work is the best advice I can give you.

That is a great idea! As long as folks don't mind some cosmetic damage. I will look into that. Thank you for sharing!

What’s your opinion when buying used Rvs how much you can get off asking? I know just like you pointed out it depends how long it’s been there. Let’s say on $140000 ask price.
@RVingwithAndrewSteele5 жыл бұрын
Used RV markup really depends on the dealer. some dealers have no negotiation cost while others try to tear your head off. There are a ton of different variables but your comment has sparked an idea for a KZbin video coming soon. Thank you ..
@thomasebraden5 жыл бұрын
Thanks you see a lot about new Rvs no so much on used. I figure there’s probably at 30% over what the gave the person that traded it in.
@RVingwithAndrewSteele5 жыл бұрын
@@thomasebraden it all depends on the dealers, I've seen dealers pay $40k for a rig and list it for $120k. there is no set percentage on used RVs, it all depends on how greedy the RV dealer is.

Is a simple rule of thumb if you're thinking about purchasing a motorhome RV take off anywhere from 25 to 40% off the MSRP price that's where you should be a lot of dealers will if you don't know anything about them they'll come in at a price lower than the MSRP and you don't realize it sounds good to you you don't realize they can go a lot further we're getting anywhere from 25 to 40% off the MRP price.

I don't think there is any such thing as an honest and truthful auto or RV sales person. The reason being is that they would be looking for a new job within hours of being honest and truthful. I'm quite sure that many sales people would like to be honest and truthful as it is not in the human makeup to be dishonest and untruthful. An honest and truthful sales person sits down calmly with his buyer client and explains the pluses and minuses of each and every item and then allows the buyer to make an informed decision. However, from what I have seen and experienced when purchasing a car or rv is that the sales person arrives at a price that the buyer will "tolerate". After that it goes to the "Finance Manager". The only requirement for that position is that you are a totally depraved individual with little caring for anyone or about anything. Lie, cheat, and steal is your game. From what I have witnessed the auto and rv industry needs to be regulated by a tough government enforcement body that will delineate respectable business practices and that can fine or pull licenses for infractions. Sales people and finance managers should be licensed after specified schooling. I am usually not for any government interference with private business. However, In this case it is a necessity.

If you have not done your homework and know what the RV you are looking at is worth... you only have yourself to blame! Lazy/uninformed buyers will get ripped off every time!
