Me too! They look at me like they've never heard of it. I'm like....this is a pretty iconic haircut, unsure why they never learned how to do it, especially now that it's popular again. And it's like they're unwilling to even try to learn how. As a stylist, I would think they would need to update themselves on what's trending. It seems like a lot of stylists now days don't know what they're doing, and I don't know how they even have jobs. The last one I went to, cut the right side of my hair in a completely different style than the right, but I didn't notice it until I got home. My hair is curly, so it hides a lot of mistakes. I ended up just cutting it myself, and it looks much better. It seems that quality workmanship in hair is rare these days.

I'd never had a bad haircut until the last few yrs. I hate the way they cut hair b does6 seem to do any good to tell them that. I have thick course hair w body n well!!!!!

I am so grateful to find your master-class videos. We are all aware of your wonderful talents, but your rapport with your viewers is equally refreshing. I had my first Shag done at the " Master's " salon- Paul McGregor- although he was already doing only very "elite' clients. I was, nonetheless, very grateful to have a well-trained assistant fill in. That was in N.Y.C., 1969. I'd been fortunate to have little problem up until about 8 yrs. ago, when ALL of my haircutters moved- on, or retired. I 'd had 2 different people cutting it to approximate your wonderful variation on a Shag. I've been cutting my hair- by myself- for 3 years! Sometimes... I get lucky, but it's VERY hit-and-miss. If I could persuade ANY hairdresser to look at your tutorial, I'd be so thrilled. My sister has the same problem and is always begging me to cut her hair. I trim her bangs, only when I wish to live dangerously... I wish you could take your tutorials on-the-road!! (We really love your interaction with your wife! ) Thank you for the hope and inspiration. It's a genuine pleasure to see your artistry; and the quality of the videos are terrific. Keep it up, PLEASE...

Jake, would you be willing to do a new tutorial on this cut but with a more v-shaped back? I am getting my hair cut in about a month and I would love to send a video (and screenshots) to my stylist. My hair is fine and not thick but not super thin either. I have natural wave if I get layers like this. It is about 3”-4” below my shoulders currently. I love this cut so much. Thank you!

When I go to the salon they say I can’t have length with a shag and then they ask me how short I want it on top., why are they asking me questions they are the hair stylist.I love this but hard to do unless you do the pony tail style cut.

Hey Maria, sorry to hear that. Miscommunication is the #1 reason clients leave a stylist. I always recommend pictures, screenshots, anything to get your point across. If the stylist is ego is to big for pictures, I'd recommend finding another stylist that is open to your ideas. Cause in the end it's a collaboration of the guest and the hairdressers ideas to find the best style for you!
