Today we're doing a DIY shag makeover. A lot of people can't afford to go into the salon, and it's completely fine to learn how to do our own makeovers. Try this technique out for yourself!

My friend and I watched about 50 videos on how to cut a shag haircut before selecting your video to use as a guide. Her hair is extremely thin and I had never cut anyones's hair prior to this so I needed a video that would give me the greatest chance to succeed. I would watch a step then pause the video and i did that step to her hair until there was nothing left to do but remove the rubber bands and see how much damage control we were going to need. The bands were removed. I ran my fingers through her hair shaking it a bit and we both responded to the outcome by saying "oh my God it worked! I did it! Your hair looks better than I've seen it in years. What a great cut!" And what an awesome video he made for us to follow. We cant thank you enough for sharing your knowledge with us. She feels beautiful and I'm proud to say with your help "I did that". Thanks again for sharing. Teresa and Shanda Staunton. Va.

I've never watched any of these videos before. I really like this one. I've always put all my hair up at once and did it that way. Now I want to try it in these sections. My hair is also a bit thin. 80% of it actually fell out a few years ago, I guess stress. Now that it has grown back after that nightmare, it seems healthier. I am 49, thought that it would be thinning more by now but hasn't, yet.

Thank you for this clip. Responding to the “Why would anyone want to cut there own hair?” Question- sometimes it’s about money and sometimes it’s bc the stylist never does what the client asks. I’ve always liked edgy cuts, apparently many stylists don’t. Lol. I’ve either had a friend do it or myself.

I absolutely agree with you! I have been trying to find hairstylists in my area that don’t charge an arm and a leg to do shaggy cuts. I even show pictures. I get boring layers! I find that most hairstylists nowadays choose to do color rather than cut for many reasons and some do amazing color. But it’s very hard to find good cutters, especially ones that are not stuck in their own routine and are willing to expand their knowledge and, learn and do new things! Hence DIY’s!

Facts, and sometimes they straight up destroy your hair. I started cutting my own hair years ago because of bad stylist experiences, but decided to give them another chance last winter when I wanted a color change & cut that I wasn't brave enough to do on my own. I booked with the highest rated salon in my city, thinking they HAVE to be good, right? Yeah, I walked out of there in tears with a patchy, fried, Kate Gosselin cut and spent the next 6 months in wigs. 8 months later now and it's barely any longer since I'm still cutting off so many fried ends. It'll be at least another year before it grows out enough to look normal again. Obviously there are excellent stylists out there like the one in this video, but I'm never setting foot in a salon ever again.

Tell me about it. They always tell me they can do it but they always seem to do what they want. Ok so I’m no spring chicken but I know a pixie cut looks terrible on my squarish face. I know that layers look better. And it’s getting super pricey.

I am going to save this video! I am 68 and you made me look 48 only with hair like I had when I was 18! The last hairdresser I saw, I even asked him to watch a video on how to cut a shag (a different video). At about :15 he says, “oh yeah, I can do that”. Then he proceeded to give me a PAGEBOY. That's the only haircut these people know! But I did this cut to myself a few months ago and my freaking hair STILL looks incredible! IF it works a 2nd time then it won’t be a fluke and I’m donating 💰! I’ll keep you posted! THANK YOU

I just found this video yesterday among many many others out there. This one seemed very simple and realistically possible to DIY. (I've watched others that obviously need someone to help you.) Anyway, I did it and it was fast and looks fantastic! I'm 65 and let my hair grow long and was tired of just tying it back or putting it on top of my head. I thought it would be fun to see how long it would grow. Wrong! I needed a change and this cut was IT! I feel 10 years younger and it is so easy to take care of. Thank you!!!!!

I'm a 63-year-old grandma with long dark thick hair and bangs I usually just throw it up on a bun or a high pony some little pieces out. I'd like to kind of do this layered a bit shorter look and was wondering if after this style cut can you still put it in a pony or a bun or is it just layered or short.

I've been wanting this look for YEARS and no stylist has been able to look at the many pictures I show them and replicate it. So after much KZbin surfing I landed on this video and turned to my husband and said, "I want you to cut my hair." Now I have a LOT of hair so manoeuvring it wet into the required ponytails took a lot of work. And he made sure that the parts were extremely precise. Before each big snip he'd ask me, "Are you SURE?" Of course I said yes because I trust him and I trusted what I was seeing on this video. It turned out AMAZING, so much so that I posted a before and after on my Facebook profile. My friends were amazed and jokingly asked if he's taking clients! (He's an electrician! 🤣) Of course I will still go to a salon for color, but I will save us the almost $150 it's been costing me to manage my mane and let my sweety play with my haircuts from now on. THANK YOU for this video!! 🙏

Can't wait to try this. My daughter insisted on spending $200 plus a tip, that's TWO HUNDRED dollars, to get a "custom textured shag" which in her words, made her look like a round headed soccer mom (she's in her mid twenties). She's trying to tell me I need to cough it up to get a "good haircut" but I am thinking, no way am I spending that kind of money on a dice toss. Even if I had it to spend. Thanks so much for sharing this!

I have naturally curly hair and have tried hair salons over the years to get the shaggy style I like for my hair. The cut never turns out like I like it so I just do it myself. If it turns out wrong and I get mad then I only have myself to blame and didn't have to pay for it. Haha. I've recently let my hair grow a lot longer and the layers are weighed down. I watched a lot of tutorials that although the end result was gorgeous they are professionals and know about angles, methods, etc. These instructions are simple and easy to follow and I feel confident that I can follow them to recut the layers in my hair without losing too much of the length. Thanks for sharing! :)

This is an unbelievably great haircut! I am not a big salon person to the extent that I usually feel uncomfortable there, and I just love to diy anything I can, so this was fabulous to see. While it was cute, I didn’t like so many short layers on top. After two years of growing it out, my hair reached past my shoulders and was all one length. But…calling me back for another shag. I combed KZbin for ideas, when I came across your video. By following your instruction, I was able to adjust the top layer to just the right spot. My hair turned out darling (it’s naturally curly). While I did take a wee chunk of finger using the chunky shears you recommended (perfect btw) I will now be more careful. Anyway, a shout out to YOU! I shared this with my sister, so she could do the same cut. Thanks so much, Jake. ❤️

Thank you for this excellent video. I've been cutting my hair using the unicorn ponytail method for the last couple of years, but really want more of a shag look. I have long, curly hair and I am super excited to try this out! God bless.

After a couple years of growing my hair out from the wolf cut I was really looking for something that would give me more of what I was desiring. I love this because while its very simple it will give me my desired look. I've always loved a bit more of a kinda messy style. Thank you so much for understanding not everyone can afford a stylist and making hair styling accessible for us.

This is AMAZING! I just did it! With crappy scissors! I have been trying to get this for years! I even show pictures of myself with my hair the way I want it from when I had the best stylist ever. But she moved away. Thank you so much!

I've watched many videos and decided to go with this one because the result was my favorite! I was trained as a hairstylist and used to give myself short razor cuts all the time but never dared to cut my hair when it was long since it took me 3 years to grow it out. I finally took the chance today after going back and forth for about a month. I was literally shaking after point cutting the first ponytail! The result though was amazing! I'm so happy I did it! It looks better than it did when I went to the salon a year ago to get long layers in my hair! It has so much movement and I still managed to maintain the length that I wanted. So happy I did this! Thank you!

I was scheduled for a haircut just like this but got Covid and had to cancel appointment. I was so devastated because I knew what I wanted and was excited for the change. Luckily, I came across this video during my quarantine, ordered the scissors, and took the plunge! I am so happy I did!! I have gotten nothing but compliments and when I tell them I did with a DIY KZbin video they are even more impressed. Thank you so much for this video!!!

Thank you so much! I injured my left wrist and do not have good use of that hand right now. I have layered long thick frizzy/curly hair and do not have an extra mirror to see in the back. Your DIY tutorial really helped! My hair is more manageable and even in it's layers again thanks to your hair cutting tricks.

Thank you, Jake!! I have DIY my hair for years and I'm impressed with your video using the rubber band technique. Yes, I have had people ask me where I got my cuts and they were shocked to hear that I do it myself. (note: no beauty school training) Now I can direct them to your KZbin channel. Again, thank you for a great video!!😀👏

One thing I’ve learned over the years is every single time I go to the salon to get my hair cut I get insulted and leave upset. I have THICK hair and went the last time to get a shag. Layers lots and lots of layers which I’ve worn for several years but my hair had grown way out. The girl said “no that will look horrible!” Then had 3 people standing around my hair chop chop chop. I left with the worst hair cut. I cried. If I’m going for a perm or color , sure. I’ll go and leave happy. One time I went to a random hairdresser.outside of my town. She cut my massive hair without wetting it. And took 5 minutes. I left with the best haircut ever! I asked why she didn’t wet it and she said it was easier to find the natural direction my hair liked to go. Something like that. That woman knew what she was doing. I’ll never find her again 😭 all I know is she worked in Kentucky

This was such an easy to follow video. My hair has been desperate for a trim/cut but I’ve not had the money. I had to improvise with a few things as I only had dog fur cutting scissors (hot water and isopropyl alcohol sterilised), a pointy wooden chopstick and a super wide tooth comb. But managed to make this tutorial work with great success on my super fine, thin curly hair. All the dead split dry ends are gone and I feel so much better and even better it looks great. Thank you again for such a wonderful tutorial.

Thanks for this. I sent a video of you doing the modern shag to my hairdresser 💇‍♀️ and what I got was nothing like a shag. I tried this and even found where she had cut some layers a lot shorter on one side than the other. This technique is genius. I have never attempted to cut my own hair and even used this dry. It turned out great. Not perfect but lt looks better than what I came home with a week ago.

Thank you so much for this video! I looked at a few, before I picked this one. The whole video made sense the way you explained it. I went to cosmetology school back in 82". Won a few competitions for long hair design. But never was good cutting my own. Watched one 2 yrs.ago, came out terrible. This was right on, I have always worn a shag, honestly this is the best I've had. Had all the right tools. Thank you so much for making this video, will be using for a long time!😊❤

Thank you, thank you, thank you, I followed your tutorial this morning, using my very sharp sewing scissors, & it worked beautifully. Im in Melbourne, Australia & we are still in lockdown & this tutorial was so easy to follow, & as long as you take your time, use some sharp scissors & a big mirror you will be fine, I'm very happy with the results & it will do me until i can once again visit my hair dresser. I have very thick hair so it was good to see how to section it properly. Now my hair is a much more manageable (I cut off about 3'' off the length & about 2''off everywhere else) & It looks & feels like a proper style, so thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I hope you get the credit (& the followers) you deserve
