I've been making the same argument for a year or so now, about how we've (specifically the USMC Infantry) gotten away from self sufficiency and studying field craft. Glad to see someone with a solid following bring it up.
@cm-pr2ys2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by field craft?
@snarkywriter13172 жыл бұрын
@@cm-pr2ys Pretty sure Hamski means conducting military operations for extended periods without immediate access to vehicles and resupply (i.e., long-range recon patrol on foot, that sort of thing). Most MOUT and counterinsurgency operations, as the video alluded to, have overall tended to be vehicle-mounted with ready access to either ground or aerial resupply, so guys can pack and set their kit up in a very minimalist fashion, and ignore a lot of the sustainment equipment that a unit would need if they had to stay functional in the field for more than a few hours/days at a time based only on what they are carrying themselves and don't need to practice the knowledge of how to use sustainment gear, set it up, and if needed improvise and supplement it from what you have available in the AO and in your gear. I would say, though, that even with good training in field craft those sorts of operations are eventually unsustainable and resupply does have to happen, since you can only carry so much stuff before you lose effectiveness and you can only forage so much before you either lose mission focus or turn the locals against you.

Old is new once again! Very similar to the ALICE belt rig I built out in the early 2000s taking inspiration from the kits commonly seen from Vietnam through the 90s and into the early GWOT- Y suspenders on the old ALICE "pistol belt." Front to back, mirrored, 2x 3mag pouches with the dual frag stowage, pistol holster one side- k-bar and radio pouch the other, 2x 1qt canteen pouches, then the old sustainment butt pack center rear, with much of the same contents! A bit less modular, and a little less comfortable than newer iterations like this, but nonetheless still kinda relevant! Good content, Adam!

For anyone looking for a better radio than a Baofeng, look into used Kenwood radios. Built like a brick and fairly easy to program, they can be had for as little as $25-40. If you're looking for something a bit more versatile, but you don't yet have a comms plan, Yaesu makes good VHF/UHF HT's that go for $100-300ish. If you're buying comms for a group, get DMR's that can do legitimate AES encryption and have the bells and whistles you want. They'll run you $300-450, but buy once crye once. Also, some of them have internal amplifiers that don't need an amped PTT to function, saving you ~$75. If you're really stretched for chash and don't have a legit mil headset, a speaker mic with a 3.5mm aux cable going to headphones or your "sport" ear pro works great. Or just buy an MPU5 🤷
