Our second concert of the summer was a collaboration between CBB, Carroll Baldwin Hall, and the swing-dance school Gottaswing! As we were discussing our plans for the series, the Hall mentioned they were renting space to Gottaswing on Thursdays, and we quickly figured out how to combine our aligned interests into a social dance with live music - the Band would play outside for anyone who wanted to sit and listen, and the dancers would take to the lovely hardwood floors of the historic Hall for their fancy footwork. The evening went off with nary a hitch, and gave us a full set of swing top to bottom…except for two sneaky sambas!
Pianist Jesse Stone wrote music for BMI under the name Charles F. Calhoun, and it's that name that gets credit for the seminal "Shake, Rattle and Roll". Originally written for the blues "shouter" Big Joe Turner, so-called for being able to sing unamplified with a live band, the up-tempo tune played a major role in the development of the blues into the genre now called "Rock 'n Roll", including through a recording by Elvis Presley.
