With their ornately-colored bodies, rhythmic pulsations, and booty-shaking dance moves, male peacock spiders attract the attention of spectating females as well as researchers. One such animal behavior specialist, Madeline Girard, collected more than 30 different peacock spider species from the wilds of Australia and brought them back to her lab at UC Berkeley. Under controlled conditions, she recorded their unique dances in the hopes of deciphering what these displays actual say to a female spider and how standards differ between species.

The worst part is that after the male entices her and mates, the females go back to stalking and hunting them and since they are usually in such close proximity they usually get eaten (the males). So they go through this dangerous act to only die in the end, after mating. Isn't nature wonderful!? lol

BBC has captured footage of peacock spiders in the wild, and sometimes the female spider will be trying to eat the male spider while he's doing his dance, but then he'll hop away and keep dancing, at which point the female will deem him worthy, and breed. Then, despite all of his hard work, she'll eat him anyway!

Some males actually sacrifice themselves after the mating process to the female so she can eat him. It sounds crazy but it helps her chances of successfully laying eggs (healthy meal) and gives better traits (male that gets mates means he's good and his good traits get passed on). Other than that, I love these guys :3

You know with Ants it's impossible for a male ant to have a father? The Queen stores the sperm male ants give her for future use. When she wants a female she uses the sperm but a default Ant egg produces males only. only Female ants can have fathers.
@SammMannPitts
@SammMannPitts 7 жыл бұрын
Wait, isn't the ant thing switched? A queen only lays females, and then she lays one male, with wings so he can leave the colony and find a queen who will then make her own colony of female ants?

Some species of male spiders* such as the Black Widows. During mating they jump towards the females fangs in an attempt to be eaten during sex. Apparently doubles the chances of a successful mate. Also the chances of finding another mate during their lifetime is very slim, which also is a reason for doing what they do

+Earthenfist I don't believe that the music we see in each example included samples of the actual sounds being made by the spiders themselves. Rather, I believe that the musical clips had been created and/or sync'd with the spider movements. I could be wrong in one of those cases, but I don't think so.

I found one at work today, kept it.. (Did pet research on em.) c: i knew it was a jumping spider because i watched this awhile back and the animal person i am, i remembered a lot of how they act/look. It was on my back pack, it was just watching me it was to cute and my bf starting talking and it looked it right over and up at him! I died it was so cute! I have been just looking at the lil guy watch me and i watch it. Its so adorable. They are very smart, it just wowed me on how tiny they really are... They are a quiet small hidden master piece of mother natures gift to the world.

+KernalPancakes same with EVERY species. cuz they have a higher investment (ressource wise) in reproduction than the male in most cases that means they need to be more selective about their mates.
@Shadywolf09
@Shadywolf09 8 жыл бұрын
KernalPancakes I would say, in the human world, women dominate in this area. Men sexualise women and have so since we existed. You have a beautiful woman in front of a man, be prepared for the man to automatically gaze at their body. A woman doesn't have to do much at all in order to get a man's attention, they are just programmed that way.

Everyone's losing their shit about how cute they are (not gonna disagree) but the genetics present here are incredible. Just imagine the bio-molecular processes in place that extrapolate the spiders genetic and sexual health into the dances, and the neurological pathways present in the females that allow it to recognize the dances. Literally these guys have about 20,000 neurons, so how can they comprehend and produce such complex data! Absolutely incredible.

if i had to make a hypothesis for this, based on nothing (lol), I'd say the dance displays the spiders ability to ward of predators, as I'm sure the coloration does for the spider, and a good dance informs the female that the male has good genes that will give her spawn a better chance of survival

Females will not eat the males if they are well fed (stuffed). Mating is really successful when the females have a very full abdomen and hasn't been mated by any males yet. A previously mated female will eat the male or otherwise refuse him in a case that she isn't hungry.

If the females were pinned down, how were their responses to the males quantified? How do we infer what they preferred?
@roblaquiere8220
@roblaquiere8220 8 жыл бұрын
+Christian Dove The researcher said that they already had incidents of cannibalism in the lab. I presume this occurred when they first ran the experiments without the females pinned down... and then the females "rejected" some of their suitors. Perhaps they still studied those tapes to see what the females did discriminate by.
@christianldove
@christianldove 8 жыл бұрын
But cannibalism does not infer preference.
@roblaquiere8220
@roblaquiere8220 8 жыл бұрын
I suppose it doesn't. How do you think they came up with the inferences they made in the video?
@supernova743
@supernova743 8 жыл бұрын
+Christian Dove I assume they kept the females fed therefore they would have no reason to consume the potential mate. Simply chasing him off would be sufficient. If they were a suitable mate eating them would be the least beneficial outcome.
@christianldove
@christianldove 8 жыл бұрын
+supernova743 There is little evidence to suggest that sexual cannibalism is motivated by hunger. Some studies have suggested it may impact it among some species of insects and arachnids, but not that it is the primary motivating factor. Also, sexual cannibalism is observed to occur post-coitus, so successful mating does not mean that the acceptable males will not be eaten. In retrospect I suppose that acceptable males and associated characteristics could be quantified by successful mating, regardless of cannibalism. Still, I think that this should have been made more clear in the presentation.

I'm looking at these guys, they look an awful lot like birds of paradise. I'm guessing they filled a similar niche; it's amazing to think of how similar these things are to other animals. In the micro-world, these things may be equivalent to animals in intelligence and behavior like birds and primates to us. Who knows; you guys may think that they're scary now, but in a couple of thousand or some odd years you might wake up one day to find a whole civilization of these guys using ants as cattle, termites as a labor force, and coming to work early in the mornings all disgruntled and glum and demanding coffee.

Jumping spiders are already so adorably engaging but these ones really ramp it up a notch. I have some in my back yard (not the peacock ones!) and they will sit on a leaf and watch as I’m checking my lemon tree for pests and sometimes they like to mess with you by suddenly jumping right at you - have me a surprise the first time until I realised they have a jump line they just swing off then will climb back up and do it again. It’s quite funny having a 5mm creature trying to pick a fight with you.
