I was able to capture a bit of our crazy marathon runs from Expo to Expo during these past few weeks to show you a bit of the "behind the scenes" travels. We definitely pushed the Land Cruiser to its limits and found some weak points to address in the next upgrade phase.
We also say a tearful goodbye to our old Turtleback and hello to a new addition to the fleet!

I'm sure parting with the original Turtleback was bittersweet! The KZbin Overlanding channels convinced me to buy a Gazelle tent, Gazebo, Shower Enclosure, etc. I hope to Overland when I retire from a Park Police Officer job & all you folks on KZbin have been my inspiration. My dream purchase is a Patriot X-3 & a Jeep or Tacoma. Safe Travels Ya'll. Wish I had known you were passing through Kansas, I bet you were within 4 miles of my house when you travelled I-70. Looking forward to more of your adventures!

Great video! My YJ had vapor locking issues after replacing my engine head. Replaced fuel pump pressure regulator and other sensors, wrapped the fuel rail and still vapor locking. Came to figure out it was the new exhaust down tube that was cooking the fuel. Anyway it was great seeing and talking to you and Sarah at Expo West about the Mojave and other topics. Your TLC was made when I left High School. 😂 Take care and God Bless.

Kevin, I had temp issues with my '66 GMC pickup with a 350 sbc. The three upgrades I did were (1) Aluminum after market radiator rated for 600hp, (2) Fan shroud, (3) Changed the fan to one with more blades. I think they all helped, but the last one we tried was the simple fan change and no more overheating.

Something to think about a-lot of electric fan set ups are limited in total CFM. Heavy duty vehicles with clutch fans are superior in cooling capacity. I recall clutch fan set ups can be up to 9000 CFM . electric fan I believe get up to 1200 CFM.

Your problem is not really the temp of the fuel in the tank, the warm fuel in the tank is the result of the main issue. Your are getting fuel in the high pressure side of the injection system that is getting so hot it vaporizes causing bubbles creating what is known as a "vapor lock". This is a comment issue in aircraft engines. Yes, a fuel cooler will help but that is like treating the effect of the problem not the actual problem. You need to make sure the whole fuel delivery system is isolated as well as you can from heat sources. Insolation around pipes and pumps help. Make sure your exhaust manifold is as far away from any fuel pipes/pumps as possible and insulate it if needed. You get a fiber cloth tape you cab wrap around it that helps a lot. Ceramic coating also helps a lot. The fuel that is "extra" returning to the tank is actually a good thing as the circulating fuel cools down the hot sections in the system.

Iv seen a lot of good comments here on your issues with heat soak. Another I would add is your sucking hot air from your rad right into your engine. Pipe your intake air from outside the engine bay may not 100% fix your issues but it’s a step in the right direction.

The best doesn’t have a big enough air intake to support the radiator with the engine swap, I did an engine swap on my jku with a LT1 6.2 and a 10 speed. What I installed was a 2019 Camaro fan on a 2 stage radiator and what is called rail coolers for the engine and transmission. With it being high 90’s pulling a trailer fully loaded up grades, I never had an over heat problem. The simplest thing I think you could start with is moving your big aux lights in front of the grill and installing an engine rail cooler. Best of luck keep up great work.

I had FJ40 and most of the guys I knew who put in a V8 also had overheating problems on hills. I have an XJ now which I put in medium size hood louvers, one of them above the fuel rail has a small 8” switched fan which blows the hot air right out. Since Landcrusiers have louvers in the back of the hood perhaps that trick could help. That really is a nice trailer.

Kevin, another great video. Great new video shots of you driving. We blew through Flagstaff in route to Chandler. We unfortunately missed Expo this year. Your Troopy brings back memories of my 40's. Your adventures with Silver have given me the bug to get a T4R. I am finally getting one for my 45th present to myself. I couldn’t get it on the day like I had planned (10/22), but I will get it Monday. It’s a 2022 OR-P in Lunar Rock. I have come up with Moondance as a name for my 4Runner. I already have SAE Baja’s, black out badge kit, Lunar Rock steering wheel emblem and RSG sliders. I have a Garmin Overlander that I purchased last year and just saw there is a Garmin module I can connect to the Overlander to control lights and accessories. Hope to be able to meet y’all next year.

Just another note, I am not sure where your booster fuel pump is located but remember that "pushing" fuel, especially when the fuel is hot, is better than "sucking" is as sucking will cause low pressure resulting in bubbles and the pump cavitating (the high pitched sound). So if you pump is not already right next to the tank move it there or install a second pump right at the tank. I have the second pump at the tank on both my V8, petrol injected SUV's as well as in all my aircraft installations and it makes all the difference! Also make sure your tanks can breath, the pressure in them must stay at normal air pressure else it will effect your fuel delivery system. I have seen in a case like yours where simply slightly opening the fuel cap (not on a full tank!) allows you to drive all day because it equalized pressures.

Not sure if this has been previously mentioned but you should really revise your intake as well. Wonder how hot your IAT's are as that is sucking in hot under-hood air? Thinking it would help to get the intake orifice out of the engine compartment to lower your IAT's. This might also exacerbate the overheating experiences and vapor lock. Keep up the great content!

Have you thought about switching back to a mechanical radiator fan? Some mechanical fans will outflow a electric fan with higher RPMs, Maybe something to look into.
@tombrown879
@tombrown879 3 жыл бұрын
Love seeing the Beast out of it's cage. not sure what setup you have for the Radiator and fans. but even good electric fans only run around 3-4000 Cfm. a good 7 blade clutch fan and properly built shroud can be upwards of 9-20,000 cfm. that is way the factories still use them on most all of the big 3/4 and bigger trucks meant to haul big loads. Yes they rob some power, but i will take a 30hp loss on a " daily" rig over cooked heads or block any day. just something to think about. Also you could look at duel or triple pass radiators. Remember too don't make the mistake of using a 160 -170 thermostat . use a 185-205f. deg. one. The therm is there to interrupt the flow to give the radiator and fan time to do there job before opening up and letting that cool water back into the engine. then closing again to do it over again. a lower temp term will cycle to fast and not give the system enough time to cool on each cycle. Another thing to look at is the lower Rad hose. if it does not have a spring built into it. sometimes the lower rad hose can collapse impeding flow thru the water pump. A high flow water pump will always be better. a higher psi rating on the rad cap will increase the boiling point of the fluid. also the mix of antifreeze to water can have some effect on this too. I hope some or all of this helps you, or someone else with there build. hope you get it figured out. we need to see many LONG journeys of the BEAST. Tom B. O. B. 23959

May I put in my two cents on the overheating issue? Thank you. The radiator seems to be sufficiently large and the fans adequate for idling and slow speed. Air flow through the radiator in the proper direction, increasing with speed is critical to cooling. The problem is that the positive pressure under the vehicle and consequently on the back side of the radiator builds as vehicle speed increases and shuts off the flow of air through the radiator. Enclosing an engine driven fan in a shroud would be a solution as well as an air-dam or spoiler\cover under the vehicle to keep the air pressure under the front bumper from increasing the pressure behind the radiator.
