Shakespeare's times were different. But yes, the play was originally meant to be a comedy.

Uchiha Madara Very late response, but you've misunderstood. A "comedy", in the 17th century, was a play which basically had a good ending for, in this case, Shylock. Nothing to do with being funny. "Tragedy" is the antonym of "comedy".

His interpretation is of a cultural experience some people cannot understand unless you live in his shoes. I understand his interpretation regardless of what people think or how it should be interpreted. Shakespeare wrote for a time when the world needed more understanding of it's people and the times. Right now we are faced with the same adversities only from different cultures understanding of that adversity. I applaud what Bashy did and I wish him well in his new series 24: Legacy.

A note about this speech, it talks about the quality of revenge. Antonio & Shylok were enemies who had to work together. they did good bussiness together but Antonio constantly insulted Shylok work and people and when his daughter Jessica ran away with the gentile Lorenzo he saw an opening for some payback.

This is just great! Sorry I can't elaborate; But I'm actually at a loss for words; except to say that our Oregon Shakespeare Festival, we have African Americans play many starring and central Shakespeare roles; which goes differently with each play and performance. I've never seen anything as good as this.

@@kanedabukarov7809 Have you not ever been so angry that you shed tears in the midst of a tirade? And consider the setting. This monologue was performed more as a soliloquy. It was staged as a solitary reflection unlike in the play when it is staged as a dialogue with Salanio and Salerio on a public street. The setting changes everything.

Albeit, this was made more poignant when I realised this dude's in a wheelchair, but I wasn't wholly convinced. Perhaps it was his today-diction spouting a Shakespearian soliloquy that threw me off the believability of it. Overall, it wasn't bad.
