I remember my elation when I first knew of the discovered copy of this program, coupled with the disappointment of its inaccessibility. This needs a DVD release!

Zeffirrelli directed this " much ado..." at the national theatre at the old vic in the 60s. Albert Finney, Maggie, Robert Stephens Derek Jacobi Frank Finlay and Leonard Whiting and Michael York as walk on. Some of them would appear in the " romeo and juliet " film .

To date - you can find this production and other Shakespeare content from the 1950s to 1989 in the BBC Shakespeare Archive Resource which is only available to those in formal UK education and is free at the point of use. Best regards, Shakespeare Network KZbin Team

@@ShakespeareNetworkthanks, I was going to ask the same. What a pity for the BBC to hold this production hostage, they've plenty of other versions for school kids to enjoy.

Maggie Smith had a nasal quality to her voice, which allowed her to convey irony so well.

Before this video, the whole production was recorded for RCA Victor records. I love what she does, but now I have learned she was doing a Kenneth Williams imitation - the personification of archness. So much the better!

I don't know if he appears in this clip, but future Prof. Dumbledore Michael Gambon also appeared in this telecast.

“Four of his five wits went limping off…” We heard Dame Maggie’s Shakespearean schooling to the end. Easily a line the Dowager could have delivered with even more relish. 😂 Miss her already. 💔

You know you are old when you have seen the original stage production! It was very colourful, though the girls had oddly plain dresses, and they all drank a lot of red crinkled cellophane paper. Funny how the details stick, and not much else...
