I feel like Shakey is one of those artists who makes art for the art and not for an audience and I respect that so hard. You can like some of his material more than others if you so choose but you can’t tell this man he’s wrong for the art he chose to create. Keep doing you, Shakey. That’s how artists stay real.

Easily my favorite album of the year, and one on my favorite songs on the album. I love that you can see he isn't taking himself too seriously in the video and is having fun with it. The album has an amazing dreamy ethereal feel to it which he really plays into at live shows. Not being afraid to experiment, and still making great music shows how truly talented he is as an artist.

As a musician, it is difficult to stay in the "bubble" of a certain era of writing. I look back on stuff I wrote 2 years ago and see how things have changed since that time. I don't blame Shakey for doing different material, I hate the feeling of being musically stagnant.

all of the negative comments saying they hate the change in sound clearly haven't listened to the whole album or watched any interviews.... the artist is mixing things up a bit, and he has a right to artistic freedom. I think he has done a wonderful job at keeping spirits high in his music. Music shouldn't be about what others want, but the expression of the artists and having good times. Wonderful job! (i love all of the metaphors in the music video, great stuff)
@RF-od3vj6 жыл бұрын
Agreed
@jjmblue76 жыл бұрын
And the people making negative comments have the right to their opinion. Just because the artist is mixing things up a bit and has a right to artistic freedom does not mean a fan of the artist's older work has to like the newer work. Listeners have freedom of expression, too, even when what they wish to express is dislike. It's silly for one to insist an artist has to stick to their old sound just to please specifically one's self, but it's equally silly for one to insist that others don't have a right to dislike an artist's new sound or wish for them to return to the old one without demanding the artist do so.
@BManStan19916 жыл бұрын
I get artistic freedom, but honestly I think this was just the choice of his producers and not his own. This sound couldn’t get any more basic unless if it was holding a pumpkin spice latte in one hand and uggs in the other.

I have to comment on this thread...This is genius. Alejandro is a story teller. This song and video makes you think. (I wont try and write a study guide here..). If you listen to the lyrics and think about the message in the video this guy is not taking himself too seriously and having a blast whilst not doing so! That said, he would be perfectly entitled to perform in this way, wear that wig and take himself seriously. How many untalented fake icons are there being adored right now for doing exactly that? I have seen the band live in Europe many times- they are so talented and genuine yet humble. So far the set has always included an acoustic part as well as the whole band. Listen to his albums, of course his acoustic set differs to them, he is an authentic performer, you wont find him reproducing carbon copies of album tracks. Do not miss a chance to see this man sing based on a knee jerk reaction to this video. Alejandro is being true to himself. This is the beginning.........

That’s what I love about Shakey, a lot of his songs seem to have depth and thought in their lyrics. So many of his songs have made me so introspective when I analyze the words, the only frustrating thing is that I can’t figure out whether he’s doing it intentionally or if I’m just overanalyzing his writing because in interviews I’ve heard him talk about his songs like “yeah the lyrics just came out that way”. Like, Dining Alone gave me an epiphany about how I should live my entire life but he was like “yeah I just thought of this guy who sounded like the character for this song so I wrote him in and that’s how it went”

I'm proud of how far he's come! I first saw him live at a little dive bar (it was fairly empty) back in 2011 and paid $5 for my ticket. I've been to nearly 10 of his shows since then. It's been fun watching him evolve. But nothing will beat seeing him perform solo with his yellow kick drum at that little bar for the first time. I'd take that any day over his now huge, sold out, shows. I must say, I don't love this. It's not that unique sound I love from him. It won't be on repeat for me. But, I sure am happy for Ale's success!

One of my favorite songs on the new album. Sure it's very much a different sound than classic Shakey Graves, but as an artist and a human being he's going to experiment and evolve. I love his earlier style, but this concept album is very good in it's own right. Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 are particularly excellent imo. As for the video him and the band are just having fun, i can appreciate it as i grew up in the late 70's and 80's.

Man i love shakey but i gotta be honest when i say that he's so great when he's by himself. When its overly produced and he's in a band it drowns out all the nuances-quirkiness-subtle-finger picking skills he has. Bare bones shakey, with a suitcase drum kit and a guitar is when he shines brightest the most. When he involves a band his songs convert to just regular run of the mill music.
@Randi-j1e6 жыл бұрын
yeah but he cant just do the same thing over and over again. hes versatile. that takes more talent than making music that is essentially redundant eventually. BRING ME THE JAZZ METAL SHAKEY
@Pr0x1mo6 жыл бұрын
no. Because many men as vastly different than roll the bones and that's different from bullys lament which is different than Christopher Columbus or Daisy chains . the point is these songs are awesome all in their own right and it's because it's in a style distinct to shakey. When he has a live band play these songs they get washed over and lose their power. Shakey is just a better musician on his own. Maybe a drummer. but bare bones shake in a ditch is the best.

You obviously can’t use proper grammar. Shakey actually has a band to work with now, comparatively with his old music the drums are more complex, and there’s actually a bass line. I really enjoy the fingerpicking one-man-band Shakey but he is way better when he works with people. It’s a full sound and I don’t get bored listening to the same two drum sounds

Shakey did awesome! Both Shakey and the video creator deserve a ton more credit. Was the video a little odd? Yes, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t pull you in. Does this new album sound like the Shakey Graves most of us have come to learn and love? No, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. If we haven’t noticed, Shakey loves to get experimental - have you heard “The Seal Hunter”? - this new album is just an extension of Shakey’s talent and wide array of music. Personally, I think that’s awesome. It’s better than doing the same thing over and over again. Though I do love the “original” Shakey, I love this album as well. It’s not pop, it’s not folk, but instead the product of a lot of time, effort, and what Shakey’s vision is. He is no sellout just because he wanted to show his fans an alternative side to his music. Really, when it comes down to it, good music is all about passion and love. I think you can hear both of these things in almost anything that Shakey puts out, you just have to look past the different approach to it (AKA the different sound). Thanks for reading, sorry it was a book, and have a good day

James Dulce I respectfully disagree, Some of these songs have been out since the early Shakey days. I know this song has been, and the rhythm from “Slay Time Blond” was used in “Dining Alone” I don’t think Dual Tone is forcing Shakey to do anything. Sometimes artists just have visions that some of their listeners don’t like as much as they do. I haven’t heard a single song from this new album played on any major radio station that singles out indie or alternative creators. It’s good to believe in an artist, especially Shakey, he’s one of the few keeping good music alive. After all, he still brings that old suitcase kick drum with him everywhere he goes
@spokesventi5326 жыл бұрын
The Art of: Music and Filmmaking HELL YEAH. You should never judge an artist evolving. And I think this video was about the many sides of himself, trying to be somebody and pretending when in the end you're just your same old self....and maybe someone else in the comments already said that. But it's beautiful and awesome to see the selves that Shakey projects himself as and I loved this video.
@user-eb9xy9wo3k6 жыл бұрын
Spokes Venti Totally man, I appreciate you going through the time to read those paragraphs I wrote, haha. An artist always needs some space even just to see how the audience reacts to the different sides of themselves and their music. It’s always awesome to see other people respond and share, even if I don’t quite agree with their intake. Have a good one!
