Shakira 1998 Interview- Part 2

This 1998 interview with a 21-year-old Shakira is one of several I did for a news report about the growing Latin music business, and the fact that many artists were about to release English-language recordings.
Shakira said she was still perfecting her English-language skills. However, as you can hear, she was already very good.
My impression from the interview and a brief off-camera conversation was that Shakira was very smart, personable and fun. . . And those eyes!
Luckily, I saved the full interview. The quality is not perfect. This is not from a master recording.

Thank you for doing this interview. I was hoping to see her talk in English before she had it perfected. It drives me crazy when people refuse to talk in a foreign language because they think they have to sound perfect. She might have been embarrassed to speak in English, but she sounds so cute and deeply intelligent at the same time.

i love interviews where they have the camera on the person they are interviewing the whole time because you catch the small things like facial expressions or hesitations, there's an aaliyah interview 2001 that does it like this too, both are beautiful and raw

I love this, thanks so much for sharing! Interesting to see her talking about wanting to translate all the songs from Donde Estan los Ladrones, a project which was scrapped since she did Laundy Service which is mostly new songs. 15 years after this interview we only have the translations of Ojos Asi (and Estoy Aqui from Pies Descalzos leaked in English about a year ago) I'd love to hear her English version of Octavo Dia, wonder which translations were recorded.

Ah, ok. I know it was a piece on the growing Latin music business, but I was just hoping because you discussed the fusion Shakira dealt with, the world fusion might have come up. Oh well, was just wondering anyway. :) You're SO lucky that you got to interview her back then, I'm studying film/video so I'm especially in awe. Ok, let me see if I got it right, she said that she would be recording the entire Donde están los ladrones álbum in English? If so, did she really recorded the 11 tracks or only the 5 tracks we got to know 'till now? Eyes like yours (Released) I am Here (Leaked) Blinded speechless (Registered in her catalog) You (there was a rumor that the song "Tú" had an English version) Shadows of You (Registered in her catalog) I guess that there were plans or she got to record "Si te vas" and/or Pies Descalzos" in English language but it remains as my personal opinion.

You totally missed the point of Shakira’s activism. She said she’s a humanist. She established her foundation Piez Descalzos at the tender age of 18, to broaden educational access. If you watch her speak about it, she’s an anti-poverty activist who is also increasing broader resource access such as to utility and food. And any person using their celebrity voice and clout to increase educational access and resources to the poor is effectively advancing women’s rights. 🥰🌎💕🌎🥰

Thanks, rpvee. We did not discuss that song. Unfortunately, my time with her was limited. I think we had an actual conversation going rather than an interview/talk. And I had to make time to interview Emilio Estefan who was also in the room. My story was about the growing Latin music business. It was not a feature solely on Shakira. In fact, I tried to do a follow-up interview with Shakira when her first English-language album was released. I was turned down by Sony. Not nice.
