I've lived in old dhaka for almost four decades. This sakrain festival has changed a lot. in my childhoood days since 1986 to 2000, we used to only fly kites till magrib azan and then get down from the roof. Its the preparation for sakrain that used to be fun. Buying kites and thread, preparing the threads (we used to call 'manja') used to be the main preparation. Now, with the lights and music and dancing and drinks, it is shaping up to be a festival I didn't know as a kid.

In Bangladesh Hindu's, Cristian's, Buddhist, Jew & Muslims live peacefully since the inception of the Ganges Delta Civilization thousands of years ago.. .. no conflict what's so ever. .. but following the British colonial era "Divide & Rule" policy .. india's RAW secret service inflict hindu , Muslim violence very often to unstabilize the South Asian region to have the upper hand. .. like last September'2021 an indian national R.A.W agent put a Quran in a hidu temple in Bangladesh which caused massive uproar among Bangladeshi people both hidu & Muslims though regular Bangladeshi's showed a great restrain & protected the rights of hidu community in Bangladesh & in that process several Muslim people got killed to save hidu community in Bangladesh. .. apart from that to protect the hidu community the law enforcement agency of Bangladesh opened fire on the order of RAW agency (indian extrimist terrorlst organization RaW often bribe the corrupt Bangladesh's law enforcement agency for extra judicial killing in Bangladesh) in a peaceful protests & shot dead 40 Muslims when they were protesting to save the hidu lives .. you may ask why R.A.W of india doing this??. just because india is jelous of Bangladesh & just to unstabilize Bangladesh's for it's rising economy as Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing economy in the world & becoming a regional geo political & military Super Power in Asia after Chinaa surpassing indian's superpoopper:2020 status. .. .. on the other hand in india it had become a huge issue & wouldn't you know that the current indian ruling hidu extremist party B.J.P which is labeled as a terroristt organization by CIA took advantages of the situation at a full throttle. .. like in year 2020 indian current ruling hidu extremist government killed unknown number (but estimated somewhere between 5k to 10 thousands) Muslims only in delhi in month of january'2020 alone, why?? ... just to pay homage to the visiting USA presldent donald trmp because trmp was banking the indian naturalize citizen community vote in the Texas & other places in the USA for upcoming election in 2020 (which is 5% of the entire population of the USA & it just happened in last 20 years that 5% people of the entire USA population is indian born naturalize US citizen .. can you believe it??) .. but trmp eventually lost the election & since his indian vote bank couldn't help him to win the trmp supporters led by indian naturalize US citizens vandalized the Capital Hill which took several peoples lives among them some of Capital polices. This is the bitter truth between india & Bangladesh & the reason that you hear & read news about communal tension & violence everywhere in the world.

If you stay until 21st February, then you may enjoy the celebrations surrounding the "Language Martyrs Day" (aka International Mother Language Day). On this day, people remember the students (and others) who fought and died for the right to speak and use their mother tongue in their motherland in 1952. 21st February is remembered every year for that reason. People go to lay garlands in the "Shaheed Minar" (language martyrs memorial) at midnight. It's near Dhaka University. A large area surrounding the Shaheed Minar is cordoned off I think after 8 PM (20th Feb), vehicles are prohibited and only pedestrians are allowed in. The whole area turns into a joyous place with various band and musical groups doing street shows etc. A nice experience. I loved it. I am not sure if it will be the same this year though due to the pandemic and other issues.

for your kind information, shakrain is mainly the kite flying festival & we used to prepare ourselves with new kites, and there's a thing called "manja" (preparing the thread that is used to fly kites. preparing does not mean just buying threads. it's a funny & joyful journey through the threads which is not found nowadays. all they use nowadays is the readymade rock thread) this dj party, useless dance & drinking in the evening is not a part of authentic shakrain. shakrain is losing it's authenticity day by day & turning out to be more of a lighting festival in the evening than a kite flying festival.
