Hi, I missed you. Did you miss me too?
Part 2 - • Ballet Dancer Analyzes...
A word of caution: this isn't an actual manual, I just named it this way for dramatic effect. The elements of dance I talk about are end products, not necessarily means to an end. True technical skills are built into the internal logic of your dance genre, and you achieve things like shape through that internal logic. It's built into the formal training.

FAQ's
1. "How old are you?"
A: 19
2. "Can you analyze _____?"
A: I get this a lot, especially for BTS. Unfortunately, it's most likely I will not analyze anyone outside of NCT. I am an Nctzen only, and the reason I can make these videos is because I'm highly invested in NCT. I've watched hours of their content, and I'm familiar with the way they move. I just don't have the knowledge or the interest to do other people. But it's possible I could do other groups if I am interested enough.
3. Why are all your ballet clips from Russian ballet?
A: There are a variety of reasons, one being copyright. Companies like the Royal Ballet are super strict on copyright (I know from experience). I also like to use Vaganova because (1) I'm a fan, and (2) they're the only school that posts their exams online.
4. "When is the next video coming out?"
A: Whenever it does. I don't have a fixed schedule.
5. Can you slow down? The words go by too fast.
A: I definitely take into consideration the length of time that is needed to read the text, but I have limitations. I edit according to the music and the length of the clips I have. It's a very painstaking process, and sometimes the words don't appear for as long as I would like them to.
6. Do you do any other genres of dance besides ballet.
A: No, I only do ballet. The opinions expressed in my videos come from my discipline (ballet), and may differ from dancers in other genres.
Disclaimer: I am not teacher or a pedagogue; I am merely a student. Therefore, I do not have complete knowledge of a particular methodology, and opinions expressed in these videos may be inaccurate or incorrect. Please consider my analysis with some caution.

Is Taeyong a mime? How is Kpop related to Swan Lake? Why does it take me 10 million years to make a video? Find out in the next installment of ANATOMY OF A DANCER: TAEYONG Part 2 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZTVe2iXn52gi6M Greetings my PB&J's, meatball subs, BLT's, and ham hoagies. Your lord has returned. This is something I started last summer, but I was forced to shelve it because of the craziness of school. It's gone through many revisions and remakes. This end product is far different from what I started out with. Personally, I like Part 2 better, but you'll have to wait for that :) Part 2 is also longer, which will make up for how short this vid is. Well, finals week is next week so, if you'll excuse me, I have projects that sorely need my attention. Thank you all for watching! @Asia Winchester because this person had a twitter account and said so. And because some of her analysis and opinions raised questions and she admitted she doesn't know anything about urban styles like popping&locking and styles of dancing that aren't ballet, while almost no one in NCT is trained in ballet, they trained in hip hop, popping&locking, krumping... I'll say this nicely, since it is her channel, but she said she has little to no interest in urban styles, which was pretty shocking given she's been analyzing these dancers as an "expert" and kpop choreos are more urban. I don't think a non-pro whose knowledge is mostly limited to ballet, and her interest is too, should be making videos analyzing dancers whose styles she doesn't know and letting fans who know nothing about dance take her word as gospel. It should at least be a disclaimer with every video or part of her analysis. Most dance reactors and youtubers expose their experience and level of knowledge in their videos regularly, or have introduction videos talking about their background, sometimes their favorite styles (so people know their biases), and other useful facts. it's common even by long term pros: they want the audience to know about their level of expertise as well as limitations, since most kpop fans aren't dancers and will take the word of anyone as an expert it's useful. I don't know if this is deliberate but almost everyone who watches these thinks the videos are from a pro and somewhat acquainted with the dance styles these idols use which isn't the case. You did. Think about it, it can contain something incorrect or be narrowed because of a lack of knowledge and people will still take it as fact. Most reactors and youtubers tend to mention their background for that reason. I watch a lot of them and they say it: who's a pro, who has a dance studio or teaches, what their training is if they're still a student, they constantly mention their gaps in knowledge when a dancer does something that's not their field of expertise!, they sometimes talk about their biases in kpop or what type of movements they like, that's very useful because dance is not objective, there is a subjective component and it's great to talk about it.

“EVEN IF YOU CAN’T SEE HIS FACE, YOU CAN IDENTIFY HIM.” That’s the perfect statement that describes Taeyong. His name is at everyone’s mouth. You heard it somewhere. The talk of the generation. Even though it was to hate or to praise him, either way that talk about him. He broke the stereotype of the ‘talentless-visual’ of the group, even the ‘SM-are-just-pretty-face-idols’. His rapping, writing and dancing skills are something new. You couldn’t help but to like him. Or if you didn’t like him, at least you know his name. When he dance, you couldn’t help but to notice him like your eyes were being pulled by his magnetic energy. He and the whole NCT brought something on our plates that we’ve never tasted before. He was unmatched. We couldn’t compare him to anybody. Yes, there are a lot of talented idols out there. But there is something he have that you couldn’t find to anyone. He is unique, a performer, build by hardships, efforts and vigorous action repeated in who knows how many hours. He’s a combination and a contradiction. The Stallion of the 4th Generation.

I absolutely agree with your comment. Before NCT I was not interested in any other groups or even artists. I only enjoyed their music. I was new to k-pop but I didn't find any of the groups I had discovered worth stanning. But I found NCT in a video called 'hardest choreographies of kpop'. The choreo was of black on black. I was like woah. I have to check out this group. When I watched the video of bob I could see no one but Taeyong. Maybe it was also because of his flaming red hair but his moves and his gaze were just asking to be watched. Then I watched boss, where I noticed Lucas, and baby don't stop. I found out that Taeyong was the leader. Then I started to learn about the other members too. It was so fun learning about everyone of them. They are all so different and talented. NCT is the first group or artist that I have ever stanned and I thank Taeyong and also Lucas for getting me here♡.

wabi- sabi You’re right! I started liking kpop when I was still in 6th grade, 2008 and I stan BigBang and Bigbang only for the past 10 years. But when they all got in military and shit happened, I was so bored and didn’t find any group worth stanning like how I stan Bigbang. But then I’ve stumbled on the 7th Sense and my first reaction was “who tf are these guys?” and my body got goosebumps. They are something that I’ve never saw before and as time pass, they’ve became more and more ahead of their time. It’s so sad that they’re somehow not so popular when I went to Korea last year (the saleslady in Myeongdong told me) and I am so happy that they are starting to be recognized by their own sound and style. I am proud to be their fan because I KNOW TO MYSELF I GOT EXPENSIVE TASTE!

I think it's worth noting that Taeyong, consciously or unconsciously, seems to know that he moves dynamically, especially in comparison to the others. From the videos we have of them (NCT 127) practicing together, we know that Taeyong makes certain noises to represent how he moves. It's as if he's trying to explain why and how he moves, but words don't quite cut it. I used to think that he used to noises to help him remember the moves, and maybe he does that as well, but after watching this, I think he also uses noise that sound similar to the way he's trying to move. Like shaky raindrop says, he's taking pictures of how he wants to move, and conveying them into reality. And it's both cool and adorable to watch.

Taeyong not only was NOT a dancer when he was recruited, he was not a rapper...either...though he has become one of the best in Kpop & you almost cannot separate his rapping FROM his dancing for ALL his performance elements are so interwoven. Nor does Taeyong rap in the same "classic" style his rap partner Mark so brilliantly does...just as Taeyong does not dance in the same style as those he trained with do. Also very interesting to bring up Taeyong's...noises...(there are twitter accts to catalog them) particularly in reference to his dancing. Because Taeyong doesn't exactly...sing...like SM singers do even though he is a designated "vocalist" but he certainly does VOCALIZE in an extraordinary way which makes his adlibs so fresh & effective. He endlessly entertains himself (and us) with his sounds. You put it well when you say "words don't quite cut it" when he tries to communicate his choreography but somehow the noises...do. Like the variety & velocity in his moves, there seems to be no limits to his, as you say, adorable critter like barks purrs tweets clicks pops and clops that escape from Taeyong with no apparent thought or translation. He is able to employ this wordless vocabulary to convey his INTENTIONS to his fellow dancers who, by now, are fairly fluent in...Taeyong.

I love how you took the time to explain the basics of dance to then better show what makes Taeyong so amazing. Taeyong has this very specific style that I've never seen anyone else have. Ten is an amazing dancer because his movements are always smooth and perfect, there's beauty in his every move, while Taeyong's movements are so sharp and like you said, he always makes obvious angles with his body. Instead of being graceful and smooth like Winwin, Taeyong is intense and every move is unpredictable. I really love watching his freestyles because every move is unexpected, even though he always does the same style, it always feels new and mesmerizing.

as a theatre actor, I can say that when Taeyong dances, he kinds of tells the story and portray the meaning of the song through his movements. In acting, one must always remember to make the scene look more natural and spontaneous than something that has been practiced over and over again, to put it simply, you should make it look on the spot, while also adding some adlibs on your movements so as to avoid being too stiff and to put more personality in your character. This can be observed when Taeyong dances which makes it more intriguing to the audience to the point where they're kind of hanging on to his movements, anticipating what's next. Great analysis!

No wonder 95% of first-time viewers of NCT content always pick out Taeyong. His movements are completely one with the music. It's like he's living and breathing through the interpretation. Usually I'm more drawn to fluidity, eg. Like the amazing Taemin, but TY is the first dancer with a sharper style that I've favoured. There was always something jarring to his dancing, I mean this in the best way possible ans frankly it confused me, but I was also magnetically drawn to him all the time. He's so interesting and intriguing to watch, and his style is not imitable because it's directly linked to his character. There's so much complexity to him in general that he's just so fascinating to me. Also love that there's a clip of Giselle. Natalia is my favourite ballet dancer 💕

When you began talking about shape, I started making a lot of connections to art. When a beginning artist is learning how to draw anatomy, references that have a clear line of action are encouraged to be used. By this I mean if you can draw a line that clearly pinpoints the body's movement, you know the reference is good. Poses without a clear silhouette or line of action tend to look stiff and uncharismatic. I know dance and drawing don't have many connections to the naked eye alone, but watching videos like this really make me see some of the threads that connect the two, and it's super interesting. I love these videos so so much, keep up the amazing work!!

Right! I was also thinking the same. I remember he mentioned once that his favorite subject at school was Art, and that made me realize a lot of things. He's been training his eyes considering his love for art, training them to be able to point out things one wouldn't generally notice. If you compare those who have no interest in art and those who do, you'll probably realize that those who practice art have sharper eyes, they can pinpoint details easily and understand shapes better. This is all related to dancing, watching others dance and sucking in all the information and details of their movements and postures, it all makes sense. He's pretty good at dancing partially because of his interest in art which helped him view dancing as a piece of art he wants to get inspired from, in my opinion.

The comparison between Taeil and Taeyong was really helpful to me. It articulated very clearly why I think some dancers are so great, and others are just okay, even if they're technically performing the same dance. It's like Taeil is dancing /to/ the music, but Taeyong and the music are flowing around and through each other. I'm no dancer, but I do like to watch great dancers. I really love that you not only analyze taeyong, but you explain each fundamental of dance so that we can all understand how you arrived at your conclusion for taeyong and to better appreciate dancing in general. When I dance, I forget to keep in mind what shapes I'm making and I'm subconsciously switching up the dynamics. By learning about and seeing visuals of these important parts of dancing, it really helps me understand what I should look out for when I dance. One of my favorite things about dancing is that every dancer has their own persona/style when they dance. No two dancers are exactly the same and so that makes the story they convey with their moves even more unique. When I watch taeyong dance, there's a very distinct style thats different than any other dancer I've seen. His style is so magnetic that even if you want to focus on others, if taeyong is in the frame you're immediately drawn to him. He was born to be a performer. Thank you for this!

Taeyong is an unparalleled dancer, that is why he can stand against the top dancers in the industry.( he is unique and unpredictable when he dance ) That's why we considered him as one of the best dancers in the industry. Your video is lovely btw. I really want to show this to NCTzen who are sleeping on Taeyong's talent just because of his face and how SM favoured him (jealousy). As expected hardwork pays off!!!! I am looking forward to pt.2 Thank you for spending so much time on Taeyong.( I understand you, because he really has too much to offer )

@@ss-dz8uf I think he is a very smart dancer that can dance efficiently like how Shaky Raindrop has mentioned in the video. Like look at his jumps and how he uses plie to achieve a higher jump seemingly effortlessly. I also think his dancing is like fluid. Look at his lines and posture, his lines are continuous, just like extending our arms and legs in ballet. Also in Black On Black, he has to do a tour, which is that jump with a spin in the air. If you slow it down, you can see how he uses a spot so he can maintain his balance and maintain a straight body when spinning in the air. His dancing is so mesmerizing to watch uwu i love him.

I'm not a professional so, my statements just based on my preference. Ten, Winwin, Jisung, Mark are great, but for me Taeyong is the best dancer in NCT. The way he always add little touch here and there, the way his body look really "alive" when he moves, his sharp moves, the way he always look really enjoy the dances and HIS EXPRESSION OMG. All of that really scream ATTENTION. I can't help but focused my eyes on him only. Hmm, I can't really describe it all well~ 😑

@@MissAnglewolf That's why I said that my statement just based on my preference. I'm not a professional who really know about graceful, fluid level or exact technic in dance. So if you said he still so far from Ten's level because of graceful and fluidity, it's okay, maybe in professional eyes that's a fact, so I don't want to argue because I don't really understand about that too. For me, when they dance together, my focus was immediately fixed to Taeyong. The way he often add little touch in his dance, his expression that looked like really enjoy the dance, his aura that scream performer too. He really make me wanna get up and dance along, the thing that I don't feel when I see Ten or Winwin dance. That's why I said, for me, he is the best in NCT. Is that wrong if I stated my opinion like that? Remembering how Ten started dance at 5 and Winwin who alumnus of a dance school, meanwhile Taeyong just started learn when he was 18 years old with harsh comment that 'he will not make it' by his dance teacher, yes I believe he still have many things to learn and offer in the future. Thank you for your input~

I get you. He has a unique stage presence and style of dancing which makes you watch him more than the technical dancers. The way he moves his body is very unconventional and it makes him stand out. He reminds me of Taemin in that way. Taemin's moves are not that difficult but it is difficult to do the way Taemin does it.
@syimato

@@MissAnglewolf well that is kinda obvious when Winwin is majored in classical dancing which makes him graceful and Ten has learn a lot of dancing background. But when it comes to Taeyong, he basically has ZERO knowledge when he first joined. That makes him remarkable as he was apart of SMRookies dance line up and now one of the main dancers in NCT. Even choreographers, idols and other dancers praises him. When he is on stage/performing, like it or not he will caught ur attention. That is why he is amazing.

I was literally just rewatching winwins video this morning omg thank you for this series I’m in no way a dancer lmao but these are so educational and interesting and make me see so much more in the way the members are dancing Haechan became my bias during the Simon says era bc of his personality and I loved the way he dances, I felt like he was such an underrated dancer, but you pointed out what makes him such a great dancer in his vid In winwins video, you really made me appreciate his dancing. I honestly didn’t like winwins style at first, and when I whenever I would watch the lovely dance video, I only ever focused on ten. But now I can’t tear my eyes away from winwin in that vid his dancing is beautiful In yutas you made me understand his dancing style, which with my no knowledge of dance, I did notice was unique compared to the others. And now with this video, it completely makes sense why people myself included always focus on taeyong when watching dance practice videos. It’s not just cuz of his attractive face but bc his dance style just demands attention. Thank you so much for this series 💕 patiently waiting for part 2 and for other nct members videos

When I first started watched nct the first person who caught my eye was taeyong, and not just because he is in the center a lot during their choreographies, but you just naturally kinda get pulled to him. When I first saw him I have to admit I thought he was just that popular pretty face who gets by because of his visual, but now I see that is CLEARLY not the case. (Also he’s adorable af ☺️ but I still can’t decide if I’m a soft or hard stan 😂) He’s not my bias, but I know exactly what people are saying when they say “If taeyong isn’t your bias he’s your bias.” 😂

I'm a dancer of 7 years now with little classical training, so I really cannot thank you enough for opening up my understanding of dance. I'm an Urban dancer so, while I can "feel out" what makes these dancers so good, I could never really pinpoint the fundamental concepts. Thanks to these videos, I now have a much deeper understanding of the things I look at and look for, and even things to consider with myself as I improve as well. Not to get all weirdly sentimental or heavy or anything, but your videos have been some of the greatest inspiration and motivation to improve my craft and artistry and renewed my interest and love for the art.
