True that but you don't have to be black to enjoy Disco, if you went clubbing in the late 70s to the early and mid 80's then it's almost impossible not to love this dance music and there was nothing like dancing drunk cause we all thought we looked good out there, we must have looked so funny but wasn't it a blast!!!

Oh yes vincentbe..I go back to the mid 60's & still lovin this music. Groovin in the clubs in SoHo & Bristol.. proper reggae, bluebeat etc. ..going onto the disco scene..loving also proper soul ..Marvin Gaye, Al Green etc. Fantastic atmosphere dancing away to music like this. It’s no shade, but the synergy between this group seems much more stronger and organic. I’ve never seen Jody smile and Jeffrey so comfortable like this during a performance with Howard.

How things "seem" do not necessarily describe how they are. The way things "seem" is subjective - a personal feeling we each have. How things ARE is objective. Is the absolute Truth of a thing. A common experience no one person can claim. This is the subject/object theory of philosophy. Maths, really. It's helpful to know. To me, Shalamar with Howard seems better. To you not, perhaps? Subjectivity, eh. Peace & Love regardless, Nina 😎

This is the Official Music Video of Shalamar performing their breakout hit TAKE THAT TO THE BANK. Originally Shalamar was formed by the late Dick Griffey & Soul Train founder Don Cornelius. The original group members were Soul Train dancers: Jeffrey Daniel, Jody Whatley, & Gary Mumford. Mumford was replaced by Gerald Brown in 1978 ( And who sings lead on all of the songs on their second album Disco Gardens & who is also singing lead in this video.) Howard Hewett did not join the group until 1979 after Gerald Brown;s departure over disputes with Griffey of payments ^ royalties.Take That To The Bank was Shalamar's first Gold & later Platinum Record.

Yep, you couldn't have said it better. I told this story for years. Only thing missing was Gerald had a very bad drug addiction. It was kept quiet where it didn't get out. Supposedly, Griffey and Don tried to help him, but I believe they still cheated the group out of money, and Gerald called it out. Don Cornelius, who was shrewd as fuck, knew and threatened Gerald to take them to court, but he had a lot of power. It never happened obviously,

Actually...they weren't making alot of money unfortunately. They made more touring than record sales. Dick Griffey and the record company was getting the majority of their money. They had bad recording contracts that didn't allow them to do well artists financially. That was one of several reasons why Jody and Jeffrey left the group. If you get a chance check out the "Unsung" story about them.

@@deewoo2776 Yeah, I know.I was just speaking in the moment while watching one of the many groups I so much loved to listened to when they were a hot group. Memories. Wow! Yeah, I saw that episode. Because that group was a formed studio group instead of a band that was already formed, say, in a garage, they couldn't negotiate much at all. Similar things happen to upstart groups where a producer forms them and books studio recording time. They are slaves to the record label because they are under contract to perform and also, wear the "outfits" they wear during a booked live performance. During concert tours, everyone else gets paid. The promoter, the roadies, the vendors, the concert venue, the lodging fees, the tour bus; etc. New Edition, The Jackson 5, The Temptations and more were treated in this fashion. (They were singers but they had no band, just the studio band.) They all were trying to simply be discovered and had dreams of becoming famous. But as time went on, they found out that it wasn't as easy as that. Remember the story about TLC? They were treated in the same fashion.

@@virgilwyatt4632 well said. I remember the TLC story. Don't forget Toni Braxton. Her first 2 albums sold millions and millions of copies worth the amount of $175 million. She didn't even get 10% of the $175 mill that LaFace got after her enormous overhead that she was billed for. Her and the LaFace executives had renegotiated a new contract where Toni wasn't a slave to a degree and made some money. You know the record business is a ruthless business.

@Hodari Daniels Leon Sylvers was a musical genius going back to the days of The Sylvers with his siblings, he knew & had an ear for “that sound “ with the people he worked with.

@@keonta81 I liked both, Howard was a great singer and brought more energy and passion and a different dynamic. Gerald looked old school, but he was an excellent vocalist too, this song his best, a great duet with Jody. He got frustrated with management decision on his contract and left in 1979, just a year after this great hit song, enter Howard. I respected these old school guys for their discipline, the well rehearsed dance routines, and overall professionalism.
