A completely derelict Chateau that we always wanted has potentially come on the market so we need to make some serious decisions; can it be saved and if it can do we risk bankruptcy to do it?

It really does break my heart seeing so many chateau crumbing away. Such a shame that the costs to restore them is so high, making it impossible to save them all. Not only the money, but the time and efforts can be draining on your life. The answer is within you and your stamina to continue on. Sad thing is, by the time you complete any efforts to save a chateau there is no time to enjoy it, we don't live forever.

Is it possible to have a group all do it together? A labor of love for all, saving a chateau, and bringing all of your strengths to the table, with a KZbin channel as well of course. You answered your own question multiple time. It is clear from your vlogs that the existing home and pub are burdensome at times. Do you really want to add another project? Only do so if you are willing to be "owned" by a money pit, just for the fun of the task. Just because Billy Petherick and Dan Preston are doing money pit projects for fun, does not mean you need to do so as well.

Lisa, you have expressed my thoughts exactly. Phil, these are very difficult times for you, esecially as you are alone so much. I understand your thoughts about the other chateau completely. Starting anew may seem like an "out". Please "weather this out" until this long Winter has turned to Spring. We ALL have had a very hard time of it lately, e.g. here in CA, USA. on the Monterey Peninsula. Another atmospheric river is coming over us and we are contending with flooding and power outages constantly. Friends have had no electricity for ten days now. That means they have no heat, no home-cooked breakfast/dinner food, no warm showers and STILL have to fulfill their, in this case, medical professions. Medical appts. have been cancelled due to power outages. We live in a beautiful place and so do YOU. We are holdiing on as best we can. Please do hold on and concentrate on what you HAVE! May God bless you and send you inspiraton! Patricia

What an incredible property Phil, good luck. Get Billy and Michael and even Stephanie involved. Such a shame there’s so much bad feelings between the chateau diy participants and Angel and Dick otherwise there would be 30 million viewers, a Facebook group with a million members and infinite Tv airtime. Maybe aligning allegiance with billy and Michael it has impacted your income? Wishing you well and every success.

It has to be said that the projects which Billy and Dan are taking on, are also insuring they do not run out of vlogging material, which will bring in money for the duration. Once one chateau is done, end of vlogging carreer until another is found. So Phil is probably in the best situation for self funding, right now, if he takes it on. In that detail, this is probably the best time, if he decided to do it. There is also the issue of equipment; right now he has good contacts to borrow anything he doesn't have, and while I do think he is possibly being influenced by the others taking on a ruin, he may need this at this time, ie for the camaderie of the other guys. Without meaning to be personal, I think Phil's biggest drain recently is being lonely while Angelina is working at the pub. A huge project is easier when 2 of you are there. I would assume that if he bought this new chateau, it would mean he would be doing most of it alone while Angelina continued with the pub for some years yet, so if he is set on doing it, now has to be the best time to go for it. But whether it is sensible for him to do so, or not, only Phil can answer that question!!

Restoring Chateau de Thiel was a 4 000 000 Euro project in reality, it had not been possibly without the co ownership of the funding companies, that from where i got my barehand estimations. However only replacing the oak frame of an existing building is different, pribably just a third of that and it can be spread out ower 10-20 years insted of one single row.

@@margueriteb.3376 They've said in previous vlogs that they have. Properties like Purnon are national treasures owned by private individuals. It only makes sense that the French taxpayers would kick in to help preserve them. The Journées du Patrimoine, meaning Heritage Days, offers people the chance to visit historic buildings and monuments, many of which are often closed to the public. I could be wrong, but I thought they said they are expected to open their doors for limited tours in exchange for some of the funding.

20 years ago we bought a holiday home in Normandy that I adore - didn’t need too much work, only decoration & nicer furniture. Yet I have never stopped thinking about the first house we viewed. We took the sensible decision as it needed so much work & would have been a money pit but it has always stayed with me & I wonder ‘what if’. Only you can make the decision not us as it is you that will have to live with either a lifetime of regret or a lifetime of hard work & debt. Bon courage!

true. The other way round also true: If you buy a place which is extremely risky then look back and say what if I had stayed in the first place. I think it is good to go for the place you love most as long as risks are not extreme. I mean why bankrupt yourself for a house? That's just not worth it.

I've had this issue, though on a much more humble scale but, for me and mine, it was big enough to give us all pause and forced us to carefully consider. In the end, we chose not to do it, and looking back, it was the right choice. It was an old house we'd lived in when I was small but it had burned down. My father had started another house on the same property and had never finished. We sold the property and moved on but, years later, it came up for sale. The new house had been finished, and the foundation for the old house had been turned into an outdoor barbeque area surrounded by roses and beds of flowers, it was all very beautiful and inviting. But we had a house already that needed work and we loved it too. We didn't want to leave it and it would have been a financial strain to try and renovate what we had plus pay for the old place. In the end, we chose not to do it. We restored the house we had and bought adjoining property instead, we built a barn and turned it into a lovely little farm. The old place was full of memories, yes, but....those memories still live there even if we didn't. We decided that we couldn't relive the old life we'd had and so we chose the life we'd made instead. We built a beautiful home and saw it through to the end. No regrets and, in fact, gratitude to have had the choice and chosen not to. It proved to us how much we loved our new home and we had the finances to do right by it without distraction as it deserved. No half-hearted attempts, no split loyalty, and we weren't overwhelmed by multiple responsibilities. We made a wonderful life and I wouldn't change a thing. You already have a home that needs your love, love it and make it as beautiful again as it deserves. If you simply must restore a ruin, you have one in your garden already that is begging to be restored, the little gardener's cottage. Good luck, Phil. The choice is yours but, if it was me, I'd choose what you already have.

Phil since Angelina left it’s obvious that you’ve lost heart in continuing to do up your current chateau and have been procrastinating for a while .If you want to move on to another project we understand but you stand a greater chance of succeeding in that if you finish some of the repairs and decoration that you’ve started eg. After seeing the mess of the inside of your chateau having no formal entry that’s original and 1/2 of it being gone I would, at 40, follow my heart. The new place is glorious. It’s a project for a lifetime. It would mean full time work for you and probably everyone you can talk into helping you, but the rewards!🎉 If you stay where you are on that island with the damp and the fragile caverns underneath I would everyday think is this place going to sink right into a cave. I’ve read all the others advice and I see their point but if you’re ever going to follow your heart nows the time.

Excellent point about getting help! Phil and Angelina made a heroic effort to restore Bailleul all on their own. The Petherick's and Stephanie at La Lande have 2 very important advantages: personnel and financial resources. Whether it's family or volunteers, many hands make light work, as the saying goes. I don't know what Phil's financial situation is, but in these difficult times especially, having money behind you in any business venture is essential. Stephanie bought La Lande with 2 friends, pooling their finances to purchase/maintain the chateau. She is clearly a savvy businesswoman in how she parlayed her YT into an income stream, along with Patreon. Stephanie has come through the pandemic even stronger, returning to running her chateau as a b&b. In addition to volunteers and family, she has also been able to hire staff, indoors and out. Pethericks pooled their resources to run Basmagnee, even though it was Gwen's inheritance that is the main financial resource in Billy's ventures, including the convent. Still, there is nothing like family when you can all come together to work on a project the size of a chateau. Billy's sister Sadie and brother Michael are now following their own dreams at Basmagnee. Bottom line: Phil and Angelina taking in a chateau restoration, along with all the property maintenance, is an enormous job for just 2 people, regardless of age and health. If Phil is alone in the chateau, doing it all alone, then it will certainly become even more challenging, physically and emotionally. All we can do is pray for them both, and wish them well.

Why did it touched your heart and soul the first time? Yes you live in a beautiful chateau and you did lots of work. But if you look deep into yourself is this really what you want, start all over again in this new money pitt. Only you can decide. Most important is that you never regret what you decide. What if I had.... only way to know is doing it. The derelict place moved me to tears too. I wish you wisdom

I wanted to say this again: the water around your terrace (maybe future conservatory) is So beautiful. I can see lights from the conservatory reflecting in the water on a summer night;.... absolute blissful beauty. But i truly understand the ache over the other chateau.

Seems like you made a commitment to the chateau you already have. It still needs to be finished. That other Chateau needs a whole team and construction crew on it. I feel bad for the last remaining family member who still loves the home, so much of the chateau’s beauty , character and family memory’s have basically been stolen by war and burned. They were handed back a mess and the improvements were not done safely. I want to cry for them.

I would go, only because of the moat around the chateau can be a real problem. Remember the flooding? You have to dredge the moat then constantly check the integrity of the foundation. I LOVE the grounds the new Chateau, what a gorgeous site. Lends to new income stream, fishing in the river, boating on the river. Sell the current project and move up to this new project which once renovated will be worth much much more, providing you get it for the right price.

I just subscribed and saw just a small glimpse of your chateau, beautiful. Your entry hall with the sunshine on the grand stair case is stunning. The grounds, the sunshine on the chateau and the moat is lovely… Sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side of then fence😊 Stay and finish the chateau that welcomed you to regain it to its former glory❤

You are the only one that can decide to stay or go. Do you need to move on to a new place? Or is your heart already at home? Lovely long drive way where you live. I would suggest you go out and do some spring gardening work along your driveway and every once in awhile glance around looking at your home. Give the thought of moving away some deep thought .......... and you will know. Gardening always clears the mind for me.

There’s something about architecture that moves all of us who love Phil and Billy and Ryan and Dan and their compulsion to rescue chateaux. But best not to become like a lady compelled to rescue 1 more cat and 1 more cat because you know how badly that ends. It’s a tragedy and a shame that this woman sucked all remaining value out of her home, like a vampire, instead of letting it go to you when you could have saved it, but it’s too late. Instead, make your own chateau the best it can be.

I would definatly stay where you are, and put all your love, money and effort - as you have already done - into what you have. It is hard giving up on a dream you had, when you fell in love with the other Chateau, but reality bites, and you have such a lovely place where you already are. xxx

Its a lovely dream Phil, plus all the history of the Chateau etc. but realistically not advisable at the moment. You still have very costly things to repair and renovate at your own beautiful Chateau plus you would probably have to employ a permanent manager and staff to work at the Pub. One bad storm/ flood/fire etc. could knock you back years. Dream your dreams but be so grateful that you have what you have now. Great to see you smile 💕🇦🇺

Follow your dreams, I say, whatever they may be!! This sounds like a place that needs the passion of a restorer like you guys! If you farewell your current place, you have left it in better condition for future generations, or if you can keep it too, you have comfort to return to at the end of a long day of restoring another historical French architectural gem. It will be interesting to watch your journey if you did!

I am way too old give give advice. Funny, I remember my grandma saying that to me. Ah, anyway. I heard in your voice how much you loved the history of the old Chateaux, how much you just wanted to tell the old place she wasn’t worthless or forgotten. There is no such thing as a building too far gone but there are pockets not deep enough, energy that runs out, and sometimes you just get tired of being a house slave. Sometimes a house are so much more than a house, she’s worth it. Sometimes when you have to let them go it breaks your heart. Sometimes when you don’t let them go it breaks your heart. Wishing you peace with your decision, sweetie.

When looking at a building like this think about the moment you may have bought a picture frame with no picture in it. One thinks this would be beautiful if it only had a picture. The building is a frame. Next question , do you know or think you can put the picture of the building back in the frame. Go for what you think will work. How many empty frames do we all own that we never tried to fill. Fill the frame if that is what you want to do. It could be a masterpiece.

Phil, stay where you are and put all your efforts into turning your chateau into a beautifully restored and maintained chateau. Maybe one day you could add the wing that was torn down. Your chateau has the beautiful paneling and woodwork, the other one lost of those details when they used it to keep the chateau warm. Don’t get bored with yours. There is so much still to do. Don’t be tempted into a new project now. xx

If a person does not find contentment in the blessings they HAVE, they will always be a restless soul. You asked for an opinion. Stay put, but enjoy your dream of the other chateau. You are ALREADY blessed with a beautiful home, and have come a long way in it's restoration. I always dreamt of visiting Ireland and Europe, almost making it there when 9-11 happened, and again but mad cow happened...lol. Now I am too old to do such travel, but guess what? I love where I am, and do not feel cheated. Much love sir. Stay the course.

Is the ruined château fully classé as a monument historique? If so, there's money to be had from the DRAC. You probably have already figured that into a budget in your head or in a spreadsheet. My impression is the DRAC professionals are also generous with advice. From the looks of the ruined château, I'm guessing there are parts that are 16th and 17th century. In that case, having good counsel is very important. You're young and enterprising. Have a go.

The other chateaux is beautiful, or at least it could be beautiful again. However, the chateaux you own is magnificent. You've already put so much work into it. Hi Phil, I love your place because of the seclusion and the moat around the house. The grounds are amazing. The other place is nice and also have a lake and a huge grounds but the cost to fix that house are going to be huge because of all the neglect which is sad since there is so much history at that location. I know you would do a great job fixing it up though. I agree with the other people that the road noise could be a downside of that Chateau.

First off what an amazing chateau and the history was really interesting. The building is gorgeous and understand why it stands out for you. My heart tells me to egg you on and save it. My sensible head tells me you have the pub, you still have unfinished work at your chateau and will be a huge amount of money to spend on it. Ages ago you showed us this little building on your land. Wouldn’t you renovate that first as a taster? If you enjoyed it then go for a big project. If you found it a ball ache then you tried it and know it’s not for you. Hope that makes some sense. Whatever you decided I will be still glued watching your channel (and Billy, Ryan, Sean, Michael’s etc)
