Shallow Fishing at Westlands Angling Tench Lake

After the tortuous spring canal campaign it was time to take a break and head to the East coast, of course I took the the rods and visited some fisheries, one of which was Westlands Angling at Sigglesthorne near Hornsea and Brandesburton.
On my initial visit I fished the Little Tench Lake which ironically is predominantly F1 fishing so I decided to return a couple of days later and fish the Tench Lake which was reported to house lots bream and a good head of tench.
I'd fished this complex a few times before but had never been on the Tench Lake and for a commercial fishery I found that it is quite deep . I decided to setup in a corner of the lake that I thought may be a natural habitat for the doctor fish and found approximately 9ft of depth on a short pole line. The plan therefore would be to go pole fishing for tench and bream and try to target them on the bottom but it quickly became apparent that the fish were going to dictate the methods used and with lots of fish showing on top I also setup a slapping rig and a mugging rig.

'Commercials' can throw up a few surprises Phillip, not that this lake is typical of a commercial as we normally think of them being 3-4ft deep, nice to catch roach rather than ide though.

@@HOOKEDFishingChannel yeah off to the thames tomorrow for 2 nights which hopefully will produce at least one bite. There aren’t many on the stretch but they could be massive. Plus there is the chance of a carp over 40 but I’d prefer an 18 barbel

The Thames and the Trent generally throw up the biggest barbel, I wouldn't know where to target them on the Thames as I've only ever match fished it.

I've got to be honest, I wasn't truly satisfied, the tench was nice but I was hoping to catch more and some bream on the deck, it just wasn't to be. At least I got one tench though which made me smile for a while 😁

Love it Martin, I almost contemplated a sesh on the canal this weekend but I went to the Swale again myself yesterday and I'm heading for the Wharfe today. I managed to extract a chub if similar proportions and a barbel 4.5lb and lost another barbel to a hook pull. I have to be careful when filming as I can assure you, off camera my terminology is the same as yours 🤣. Hope to see you on the bank one day, if you spot me, come and say "Hi", or, "now then you f----er" 😉

Great video John, some fantastic fish. Although great roach (and it would have been great to see what your total catch was) it must have been frustrating not being able to get through then.

Absolutely Mike, if I'd been on a nice light elastic they would have been good fun but couldn't risk it due to some of the lumps in there. Most places haven't fished right for weeks so maybe the bream in there were preoccupied. I'll fish it again at some point in the future and try a feeder approach at range as well.

nice video... good to see you catching and boosting your batteries.... that sort of swim i use a 5m soft carbo/graphite whip to hand..maybee 8" elastic on the tip just in case of a mini lump.. it makes it quite exciting..(but im just leisure angler fishing match approach)... i must admit i prefer your match vids i like the drama where ya thinking up different methods under pressure..

Cheers Tony, the other lakes are stuffed with F1's, this one is more of a natural stock lake with less F1's and carp but I fancied a change, apparently the bream go over 9lb.
