I fished a catfish tourney on our small rivers over the weekend. The gar was the worst I have ever seen. Our rivers are super shallow right now too. But the gar would steal our bait as soon as we put it on the hook. I only had 20 bank poles out and used nearly 300 goldfish plus cut skip jack and jello chicken. Didn’t catch many cats either. Little over a month ago I filled a 100qt cooler in one night.

Hey Mr Spencer, been watching for a while, listneed to a lot of the podcast too. Ive learned a ton from you. Ive gotten really consistent with nice channels and I've caught a few flattys.. the blues still elude me aside from lucky catches. My freezer has about 20lbs of skinned filets and belly flaps. Have you ever went through the hassle of cleaning a gar? It's made easier with tin snips, but it's still not what I would call fun. However, their meat isn't bad and a nice little change from the cats. Nice LONG loins! 😋
@bjaminf113 Жыл бұрын
Any tips on catching them? A buddy and I were on a river one night and that's all we saw. They'd bend the rods and steal the bait right when you think you hit them. Very frustrating.

I've had good luck with a slightly smaller than bait sized treble hook when gar fishing. Leaving two points exposed usually gets them in the softer part of the jaw. Honestly I prefer targeting long nose with light tackle more than the big blues and flatties on the OH.

@Countrybluez Жыл бұрын
It’s the added weight of the bait. I don’t have chubs but I can’t cast a 10” bullhead very far because it weighs so much I’ll backlash. I have to kind of lob them out. If I need them or really far, I paddle them out on the kayak

How far do you float on a fishing trip on average? I can do about 20-30 miles in a day but it leaves little time for fishing on the Arkansas. I know it depends on how long you have, supplies, etc, but I'm curious about your mileage vs. time spent fishing and camping.
