They are adding a compass to the dive mode in the next firmware update, Suunto has confirmed this on the Suunto Community Forum. And the always on display moves because it’s an OLED screen to prevent burn in

3:34 it shifts the placement to prevent screen burn
@ragetobe5 ай бұрын
I’m a bit shocked that you picked up on the shifting time that displays on the always on screen, this is to prevent the burn in on the screen, I have been wearing a few watches that do this, you don’t notice it at all. This is a dive watch, I think if you want a fully fledged computer, buy a dive computer instead of a dive watch. I have been an instructor for over 30 years, I remember buying the Suunto stinger, I still have it and it’s still working 22 years later, Suunto know what they are doing when they make a dive watch. There are always niggles with new devices, they always work it out. While it has other sports on the watch this is primarily a dive watch.

Yeah i figured as much with the reason for the moving time display, its just something i noticed that irritates me (my apple watches with always on display did not have this issue) I also find it odd that for the always on time display it always shows a 10's digit for the hour but on my actual watch face display it does not. (08:23 vs 8:23). I feel like they could continue the variable display but constrain it within the limits of the digits already used and it wouldn't seem to shift so much. Regarding your point about this being a dive watch rather then a full fledged computer: i disagree. Suunto is absolutely marketing this as a full fledged dive computer and while for me it will be a backup to a Perdix for many it will be their only computer.

@@NARoutdoors I’ve had a lot of devices for diving, my opinion is that it cannot be a fully fledged diving computer because the screen simply isn’t big enough. If you are a serious diver this would only be for fun dives, I wouldn’t even consider it for anything technical. I’ve dived just about everything there is to dive, wrecks off Scotland on mixed gas to reefs in Australia on Air. This would be the watch I would take on Holiday to get a dive in while the family are by the pool and nothing more. At the price point it’s at I consider it cheap.
@NARoutdoors5 ай бұрын
@@ragetobe I would respectfully disagree: it is a fully fledged dive computer (especially if the rumored compass update is released) and will serve the needs of 90%+ of the dive community but it is very much a recreational dive computer that could do some very basic beginner tech diving (not a tech diver myself but i personally wouldn't---get a shearwater perdix for that).
@ragetobe5 ай бұрын
@@NARoutdoors I don’t care if you respectfully disagree or not, I’ll take my 30+ years of diving experience as an instructor over your need to produce content any day of the week. A dive computer just doesn’t look like a watch, perhaps back in the day it might have sufficed, as did the Suunto Stinger, which had no compass but was a very good dive watch. Not something you would use in to any sort of complicated or specialised diving. A car might be able to go 140mph, that doesn’t mean it should. By the way, even your title calls it a watch, which is exactly what it is.
@NARoutdoors5 ай бұрын
@@ragetobe Hey, it doesn't suit your specialized needs & thats ok. People who rack up your experience and dive specialized and complicated scenerios are undoubtedly going to be served by other options. For people new to diving and people who have decided that recreation diving is enough (regardless if they are a serious or a casual divers) this style of device may be plenty for their needs: be it as watch, a bike computer, or a dive computer.

Thanks for the video, how would you compare the suunto ocean diving experience with the mares sirius?

Couldn’t say. I don’t have access to one. The people I tend to dive with tend to avoid mares in general.

There is no long 22 mm wristband available. I can just barely fit it with my dry suit on.. maybe there is a rumored update for that, too. I love my Ocean otherwise, the compass is of course vaporware until released..

I shocked it doesn't have a compass in dive mode, I have a Suunto D6i and that has one. Why wouldn't they include one in their most advanced, latest dive computer??

They’ve actually updated the computer to have access to a compass in dive mode, I’ve just not had a chance to film it due to other obligations.

The dive layout has a lot of empty space. I noted that when I was analysing this computer as an option. Hoping that suunto corrects all issues cited by you. Suunto should also include GF99 and SurGF.

I have the Ocean and agree with a number of your key points. Silly that Suunto released the hardware ahead of the compass (which is definitely coming). I do think digital compasses can be good (Oceanic app on AWU is very good). As you've noted though the UI is a bit too form over function too much clicking is required to assimilate all common information. I fear that if they follow this model forward, the compass info will exclude too much useful data and the situation will just get worse. In addition to your screen mock up, I'd love to be able to disable some of the crazy long list of data points scrolled through at the bottom.
@andrewgough15585 ай бұрын
Oh and, please, please, let us manually end a dive on the surface, not have to wait for it to time out.
@NARoutdoors5 ай бұрын
absolutely agree with some more customizability of the bottom scrolling section! In my dive thoughts i actually mention that perhaps having it default to the tank pressure after inactivity would be an appropriate work around for my desire to always have tank pressure displayed. I also realized after making my most recent video that it could use a guage function!

I really like it, but I'm afraid of mixing my everyday needs from a smartwatch with a device that is responsible for "keeping me alive" underwater (what will happen after 4 years of everyday use?) (The same apply to Garmin Descent)
@NARoutdoors4 ай бұрын
Defiantly something to consider but I've also seen plenty of people pull out of storage their dive computer the day of their trip to find out its not working...it really could go both ways. My best suggestion (and what i do personally) is dive with 2 computers. I love my Shearwater, especially so because it uses AA batteries that i can find anywhere...

Good catch! It’s not something I really used on my Apple Watch so I didn’t notice there wasn’t an option. Personally I’m rarely in a place I need to pay for something and don’t have my phone so it’s not a huge deal for me.

There is no compass in dive mode? Seriously? I was actually starting to consider this watch instead of the (much more expensive) Garmin Mk3i. I was going to sacrifice the tech features, but no compass is hard to swallow.

You have not dived it yet! Or you must be diving with a shorty. The dive computer does not fit around your arm when diving with a drysuit or 7mm.
@NARoutdoors5 ай бұрын
thanks for the replay and you are spot on; I can confirm the band isn't long enough for a 4m compressed neoprene dry suit (the 4i extension band works with this however and will allow u to use it as a drysuit computer which i will be highlighting in my next video about this computer). I think suunto really is really marketing this for new diver / rec divers / vacation divers and not drysuit divers. I dont think they could make the band much longer without causing problems for daily wear...for me with my wrist size the medium band is just about as big as i could wear on a daily basis without the tail sticking out too far.)
