I think donors frequently misunderstand how thrift shops work. Many exist to support a local nonprofit, rather than simply redistributing what they receive to the less fortunate. So, the more donated items they sell, the more they can turn around and financially support the work of their nonprofit partner. Resellers, therefore, are helping to support that nonprofit. The thrift stores aren't giving donated items away, in fact, they're doing exactly what resellers are doing, which is to resell used items for an income. There's nothing disgusting or unethical about this process. And I'm so impressed with what you were able to do, Margaret!

There is no difference between buying at thrift stores and reselling and buying at auctions and reselling, or yard/estate sales and reselling. Anyone who chides you for that, in addition to being a jerk, does not understand the essence of buying low and selling high is that different items will be of different value to different people. Someone who would only piece of art glass or ceramic or jewelry or anything else strictly for the convenience of a useful object at a low price is an entirely different consumer from someone who values it for its worth as a collectible or as a rare piece of design or anything that makes it valuable to them at a higher price.

Goodwill and other thrift stores has raised prices because of THEIR Greed. People need to quit blaming the resellers. We all have our reasons for reselling. I was laid off from a corporate job after 32 years. Finding a job with similar pay was almost impossible at my age (yes, age discrimination is real) Being a reseller gave me the opportunity to watch my grandchild and work from home. I refuse to feel guilty. There will always be those people who get off on blaming and shaming. Margaret, please don't let them upset you. We love you for who you are. You are a strong, smart warrior woman!

Thank you!! I am 72 retired Mental Health Counselor. I did not retire with a 401k. My new reselling business is a way to supplement my income. Can’t believe people are shaming resellers. When we purchase from Goodwill we are helping to pay Goodwill employees salaries. Be well and thanks for all the great reselling tips you have given me.😉🦋

A lot of retirees start reselling as an entry into business. As a way to cushion their retirement pension, which doesn't leave much. I see elderly people all the time in the thrifts and I know they're supplementing their pension, but also getting out of the house. Their kids are grown (or dead) and they have nothing better to do.

Margaret God bless you!!!!! You have not only shared your knowledge, but your life circumstances. That takes a huge amount of courage. You have spent time, energy, and money to teach others. You have given us a piece, of your heart!! Please remember your videos do so much to help others. There will always be someone out there who views whatever you or anyone does in a negative light. They will to try to rain on the parade. Personally, I can relate to your struggles. Today I’m an old lady. But at one time I was young mom, desperate to get out of a bad marriage. I procrastinated long enough after high school to deny myself a University education. I do believe God had a hand in sending my mom a grumpy, rigid old angel in my dead father’s best friend. He pulled some strings and 3 years after high school I found myself graduating from a hospital based nursing school with a diploma and after passing Virginia state boards the right to call myself an RN. Hospital based nursing schools no longer exist. Community based Colleges now offer 2 year AA degree programs for RN and a little under 2 years LPN programs. Today it’s it’s very difficult to qualify for AA programs. I see God’s hand all the way back then. Today, my procrastinating high school self would be flipping burgers because I would not have met criteria to enter a nursing program. Again God’s hand or serendipity I don’t know but I can guess. Fast forward many years and I was a young mom in a bad marriage. I lived in California and was gainfully employed as a jail nurse in a one of the largest jails nationwide wide. . As a county employee I had a good salary. 😅 Only because of my education and salary I was able to escape my bad marriage to become a single parent to two young children. As a single parent I could give my daughter financial support until she graduated university with a BA and.also several AA degrees, including a certificate in office management. She is now an HR specialist and being groomed to head her family owned corporation’s head of HR. My son has severe learning disabilities . Again because of God’s hand or serendipity I had medical insurance that paid for some of his treatment. My salary paid for tutoring. Again though life was a struggle, he managed to graduate high school. Unfortunately, he has chosen to live life as a criminal. I have no communication with him or my grand kids. Now at 71 I’m on PALLATIVE Care soon to be in HOSPICE. I’m starting off as a reseller. I’m not to spend my last days staring at a wall. Until it’s my time I’m learning and Margaret you are a stellar teacher! I have mentored other and it’s hard work. Reselling especially if you are learning like me or just want to see Margaret’s many videos please thank her for all she has given us. I’m very thankful that you are here Margaret. son on the other hand made the decision to live life I can’t condone. I’ve had to break off any communication with him and with my grandchildren, which breaks my heart. You have shared your struggles and have beena wonderful example to others in difficult situations. Or others who just want to learn and start a new path in life reselling. Margaret I have learned so much from you. Thank you! I have mentored others in my field of correctional nursing and in the field of legal nurse consulting.

Coming from a very poor childhood I can 100% say - when you're poor - you dont want labels! You want food. You want safe home. You want health. Clothes is clothes. Things are just tools for our lives. It is up for the parents to teach right values. That money are earned. That hard work is good work. That you don't judge anyone based on their appearance or ability to buy things. Texas Gal - you go girl! Thanks for being inspirational and kind to many people!

It amazes me that some people have this reaction to hearing that people source items for resale, from charity thrift stores. The purpose of these stores is not to provide goods to low income people (with a few exceptions). The purpose is to make money for their charitable causes. The more money people spend there, the more money the store makes. You are helping the organization by shopping there. You aren't stealing items. You are paying the asking price, that they determine. Furthermore, most of the things we see you buying are items that people don't really need. You sell things like jewelry and small decor items. You aren't taking food away from anyone. Thank you for encouraging all of us toward personal empowerment and abundance.

For those of us who can not get a regular job for whatever reason, be it lack of skills or health related, reselling is a true lifeline. If the haters were in our shoes, I'm sure they would think differently. Reselling definitely beats going on any government assistance program. Haters are going to hate. God bless, Margatet. And happy Easter.

I Thank you for this video. I retired in late 2019, then the pandemic and all hell broke loose in terms of food and everything in the economy. I had to find a way to supplement my income in order to afford food, medications and life in general. I chose to resell what I had in my home and was able to supplement my income enough to afford food on the table. I don't make any more than 400-500 a month but that keeps me from going on food stamps and asking for other services. I go to Goodwill to thrift, but your taxes aren't supplementing me through social services, I'm earning money to keep me off asking for assistance. I will not apologize for thrifting; I could be homeless or on social services costing taxpayers more money. I am supporting myself; the government is not supporting me. I worked and paid into Medicare more than what is allotted to me each month.

Goodwill funds job training. Many people have benefitted by being given a chance, whether they have no marketable job skills and need them to try to work at all or are working to get off public assistance, are developmentally disabled or are otherwise overlooked because they were formerly incarcerated or have another strike against them. Many people have moved on after completing job training programs. Not all help that involves the handing out of items really improves people situations in the long run.

I understand where you’re coming from but you spend way too much time justifying something that doesn’t require any justification. Resellers shopping at Goodwill aren’t preventing anyone else from shopping there. There are still plenty of clothes and knick knacks left when I leave. And I’m sure these thrift stores appreciate ALL the sales, they don’t check your income level at the door. Such a ridiculous argument doesn’t even deserve your time.

This is crazy!! As a reseller and someone who has worked nonprofit for over 15 years, the idea that someone would say resellers are somehow taking away from people in need is just crazy and they obviously don’t know how it all works. Resellers don’t get items for free that were meant to be free for needy families. Instead, they buy items from thrift stores ran by some nonprofits and the money they paid for the items then goes to that nonprofit’s programs which are offered to those in need. Furthermore, resellers are also doing consumers a favor by doing the legwork to find & sell either hard-to-find items and/or gently used items, usually at a lower price. I wouldn’t sell something to someone else that I wouldn’t be willing to use myself. Most thrift stores won’t even put “gross” or junk items in their stores. If someone just HAS to complain about something, complain about those who literally donate garbage to places like Goodwill bc they’re too lazy to sort through their junk pile. Instead, they just drop it off and use up resources of that nonprofit who has to pay someone to sort through it there. And for those who think using a used item is gross, it must be nice to have grown up without any “hand-me-downs.” SMH. Okay, my rant is now complete. Lol

I decluttered and donated thousands of dollars of like new and new items from my home over the last year and a half. I decided and felt called to give rather than resell because I have a full time job and wasn’t able to take on the task. I prayed on this because of course I could benefit from the earnings but I really needed to move the clutter for my sanity. I prayed and asked God what to do and the answer I got back was to give it all away. I wanted my items to go to someone in need for the items by either using them or specifically to resell and profit off the items. I wholeheartedly wanted my reckless spending and clutter to enrich someone’s life in anyway that it could. As a person that donates regularly, I’m so happy to see a video where someone resells thrifted items and profits so it can help better their life. Great video ❤. Thank you.

Also... if it were not for Goodwill's resellers the store wouldn't have enough customers to stay in business, The Goodwill is set up to give people jobs who normally wouldn't be able to have the money or self esteem that comes with working and socializing. The Salvation Army thrift stores are there to make money for the charity that helps the homeless and many other things the Salvation Army does, the Humane society thrift stores are there to make money for the Humane Society, as are the Hospice stores and others.

It takes a long time to take photos. You have to store the items you have to write the listings, packaging materials, communication the person in the show up then you got a find someone else to buy it relisted again go to the post office. There’s so much more that goes into it there’s plenty of stuff at plenty of charity stores and thrift stores and churches. Yes so much out there now. Anyways, you keep going girl you’re amazing. I like to remind people of Goodwill’s mission statement: Goodwill's mission statement is to improve the quality of life and dignity of people and families by helping them reach their full potential through work and learning, while strengthening communities and removing barriers to opportunity. Goodwill's vision is to eliminate poverty, and its values include "Not charity, but a chance". It says nothing about providing goods to poor people. As you said, if helping people in need is your priority, give to a homeless shelter or to the YWCA that provides clothes directly to women who escape abuse with nothing but the clothes on their body.

Those people are not haters they are poorly informed, and well done Margret for enlightening them. Ill just add, that at the present time charity/goodwill shops rely on high turnover to raise money for good causes they are affiliated with. It doesn't matter who and why is spending money in them as long as things are being sold fast. A good charity organization can achieve so much more with cash than a pile of junk, therefore no reason to think they should be exclusively for people in need. We should all shop second hand anyway if we care for the future of our planet. Happy Easter and best wishes.

I have helped out in thrift stores before and I can assure you that they want fast turn-over, cash income and keeping stuff out of landfill. Re-sellers are a big part of that and so much more would be wasted or lost if the reseller wasn't part of the game especially because of online shopping. More power to you and the best of luck.🙏

I’ve been taking my special needs kiddo to weekly therapy for 10 years so a “regular” job was not an option. Reselling has been a way in which I can contribute some income to our household. I thrift items that would not be a priority for low income buyers as I resell “wants” not “needs”. Thank you, Margaret for making this video!!💕

This is profession just like any other jobs. I have been collecting vintage jewelry items, furnitures and home/garden decor for years and I preferred to rescue these items instead of repurposed them or dump in the landfill. I am greatly appreciate for those who rescued them for me to enjoy. The same goes for vintage books. I have learned and appreciated our history by collecting these pieces watching your and other KZbin channels. I worked in the IT industry for years and I viewed your profession just like my and other professions that we do to raise our families. Don’t let the negative energy influences your profession 😊. You rock!!!

So, for the sake of full transparency, I will say that I have indeed made those comments before and for that reason I thoroughly appreciate your video. I wish I could have a telephone conversation with you for a few minutes. Your perspective was truly enlightening because while there are some really greedy people out there you helped me consider the fact that resellers are not rich people. Nobody is out there, Thrifting and reselling when they could be vacationing in Vienna or on some remote beach. You brought up an excellent point and I think everybody should hear it. I actually watch a lot of resellers that I really like, like the nurse flipper and the crazy lamp lady. I love to watch them find cool things and I love when they make a profit. It’s not the resellers that people don’t like one of the things that hurts me is to see something that somebody bought for a couple of dollars and then they sell it, what I believe is an outrageous price. I guess it hurts me when I, like you, struggle and the opportunity to have something nice is taken away from me. OK to make a profit, it bothers me when the profit feels excessive. And I am not saying that that is what you do. And I am not referring to things sold at auction or the seller isn’t controlling the price. I realize that corporations do this, and I am against that too. Actually, I despise it when corporations do it because aside from making excessive profits, they have employees that are always underpaid. For me, the worst offenders are the ones that go to places like Disney, or pop-ups, and clean a place out of wanted items and then immediately post them online for 10 times the going price. I guess there are pros and cons to everything, right? Either way, I appreciate what you’re doing and I genuinely wish you well and I appreciate you not having any hate towards people that may are unable to understand it the way that you do. ❤

There should be no shame in what we do. No matter your reason there is honor in supporting yourself, adding to income, keeping items from the landfill, giving them new life, providing things others want and need...we work hard! If we are purchasing from a thrift store we are adding to the income of the store who in turn hopefully does good with our contributions. Thank you for working to eliminate the shame from what we do.

Thank you for sharing your story, I also left an abusive marriage. It will be 10 years this October. The only way I was able to get out (alive) was because I had a career and supportive family. After leaving I found it difficult to go back to the line of work I had been in for over a decade, so I worked multiple jobs to support myself. I discovered reselling on posh a few months ago and use it to supplement my income. The physical scars heals but the emotional and verbal abuse stays with you. You are so strong, you are a survivor.❤

I was a teacher, with a steady income, until I developed psoriatic arthritis and spondylitis about 1 1/2 years ago. I’m in constant pain and have problems with my fine motor skills and mobility. Reselling is the only way I’m getting any money, and my best chance to dig out of the hole I’m currently living in. I went from building a new home to now living in a small two bedroom HUD apartment with my two kids, where I’ve transformed half of the living room into a bedroom for myself. My life has totally changed. I’m trying to get social security disability(which wouldn’t be enough), but it’s a long road, and I’m not sure how people are supposed to live while they’re going through it. I’m not gross or disgusting for trying to support us, nor is anyone else who is reselling for any reason! I often feel ashamed for the way my life is now, but I look at people like you, Margaret, who have completely changed their circumstances through reselling and it makes me feel so much better. I’m thankful for you and all that I’ve learned from your channel! ❤

Thank you for this video. It breaks my heart to hear how much undeserved shaming you and other resellers receive. Many people don't understand how thrift stores actually operate. It is not the stores' business model to simply sell items to poor people for cheap prices. If this was the intention, then the stores would operate more like food banks where customers would have to show proof of income to demonstrate need. But the actual purpose of the thrift store is to raise money for their charity by selling second-hand items to any customer willing to pay their prices. Once you buy an item, you own it and can do whatever you want with it. There is no gatekeeping by the store staff. It seems that the only gatekeepers here are the critics. Kudos to you, Margaret, for everything you've been able to accomplish!

I have actually pointed out to a thrift store worker that selling to the average reseller is still fullfilling their mission. I told her that the average reseller is not getting rich, they are working hard to help pay their bills and afford gas for their car. I resell to supplement my retirement income. I can hold my head up because I am working for my money and reselling motivates me to get off my couch and walk and socialize -- both good things for a senior. Not the traditional view of the store vision but still helping someone in need make ends meet.

I came out of a similar abusive situation. You have a lot to be proud of, no reason in any way to be ashamed. Survival requires using whatever skill set we have developed over the course of our lives, that doesn't hurt anyone. A thrifter is putting cash into the hands of people in need. God bless you for doing all that you do. Buying items that are donations helps the people who need those items sold, or they won't benefit from the donations.

If an organization runs a thrift store for the purpose of helping those in need, I always thought they did that in 2 ways. One by hiring and training people in order to help them get by into the job market. Two, by using the money made by selling donated goods toward helping people in need. I have never thought the thrift shops existed only for "poor" to purchase inexpensive items. Today, many of these shops have prices that are outrageous anyway. Haters will always be there and clearly, in this situation, they don't have any idea what they are talking about. I have followed your journey for several years now. You have come out strong. I applaud you, Texas Gal!

Hello Margaret. I wish I had known how to resell when my kids were growing up. I could have gotten out of my abusive marriage sooner if I had the additional funds. That being said, the thrift stores SELL donated items to be able to fund their programs. So why would it matter if people re sell what they have purchased? It is a win-win for both sides. These thrift stores also donate items to organizations for single members moms, under privileged, people going through drug and alcohol addictions that are turning themselves around. You keep doing you. People are going to not understand no matter what you say! BRW, I found your channel while I was living in Austin. In summer of 2020, I moved back to Colorado. First off, all that donated stuff isn’t going to be purchased by “needy” folks. They’re busy buying food and paying rent. It has to be purchased by someone. Second, who cares who buys it? The thrift store gets the money! I thrift and resell because I could NEVER EVER work due to severe health problems and I have to have a “job” I can do in the good moments. People shouldn’t cast stones. Isn’t it better that people WORK instead of try to be leeches on society? You GO Margret!

Thanks for your great videos. I've been told by someone who worked at a thrift store, often , those who should be shopping at thrift stores, don't, they get themselves in debt because they want new stuff. There is so much in all the thrift stores I go to, plenty for all. Likely, those who don't like it that we resell , have no idea, that often, when they buy something online, they have bought from a reseller. Really learning a lot from you. I also sincerely appreciate, The Crazy Lamp Lady and Commonwealth Flipper and there are oodles more out there who have great information to help all of us resellers. Keep up the great work, really appreciate your time.

Thank you for your story and I'm so happy that you got out! My husband has Asperger's, which can cause abusive behaviors Whether intentionally or not is irrelevant, it's a horrible thing to be on the receiving end of being treated like a nobody. I, myself, am dabbling in reselling as well as working with a restaurant delivering catering to offices and businesses. Here is what I say to people who talk about things they have no ability to think outside of the box of judgement. Sourcing is healing and helps my mental health. There is a crazy over abundance of "stuff" to be bought bc people are always buying more stuff. Where is it all going to go? To a landfill that is already overly filled. I always think of someone out there who would love to have something I have found while out there sourcing. Could be someone who doesn't have the time, maybe they're disabled, lonely, struggling mentally, maybe terminally ill and it's something that would make them happy for a moment. To those who judge and are not nice to others, look at yourself and just try to be a better person today than you were yesterday. It's not a competition and there is nothing to gain by being mean. I'll say this last thing. I lost the best man I ever knew 8 years ago bc he took his own life. In any moment you could be an influence to someone you come across in the world. So yeah, hating on others can mean life or death. Be the reason someone wants to continue. I love you Margaret, you are an inspiration

They are just unhappy, nasty people that are jealous of your creativity. Keep doing what you are doing.

The Goodwill also have raised the prices of items so much so that people in need may even find it over their budget.

I resell because I have serious medical problems. I cannot work a 9-5 job (although I did work in the medical field for 20+ years, unfortunately running my health irrevocably into the ground.) However,I refuse to get disability benefits because I want another to take my place and receive it. I can still get up and move, so while I can, I will resell. I can make my own schedule, I donate and shop at thrifts & yard sales when I feel good, and research, photograph, and list on days I can’t move very well. It has helped not only with still being able to pay my bills, but also my state of mind. Keep doing what you do, and stand proud. Always love your content! ❤❤❤ Thank you for being you!
