Oscar®-nominated William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum star in this fiercely engaging and fearlessly twisted series. Chicagoan Frank Gallagher is the proud single dad of six smart, industrious, independent kids, who without him would be...perhaps better off. When Frank's not at the bar spending what little money they have, he's passed out on the floor. But the kids have found ways to grow up in spite of him. They may not be like any family you know, but they make no apologies for being exactly who they are.

i love how they portrayed Ian's bipolar disorder, it wasn't like BAM LOOK HE BECAME BIPOLAR OUTTA NO WHERE but they took time in developping it, showing symptoms slow by slow, and the mood swings like the accident with Mickey, also the drugs, alcohol; the drama and family issues, he will surely be affected, after all he's a human being, a teenager on top of that, so i don't think this was "stereotypical" or "overboard", it is just perfect. also it will help people who aren't familiar with mental illnesses to see it, how someone so "stable" and tough can turn into this....MESS. Cameron is a great actor, love love how he changed Ian's attitude in a blink of an eye and it was so well done (then add Noel's acting to the mix and there you go), one of the many reasons why i perfer Shameless US, more realistic and better acting.

I don't like Fiona. I'm sory. I'm a die hard fan of the show, I'm so happy they're gonna be back next year but I needed to get that out. I've tried but I just don''t like her. Ian, on the other hand, is my favorite Gallager. Everyone in this family, as in life, has their emotional shortcomings but Ian is just so overwhelmingly out there with his feelings. It surprised me because I thought this was going to be another typical case of a gay boy in the closet and yet he has always been the most honest about who he is and what he wants. I find him the core of this show and I really missed him this season. And seeing him now, we really begin to grasp just how much the whole thing with Mickey broke him. Also, mad props to both actors. I'm always on the verge of tears when I see Mickey and Ian together.

Yep, Ian is my fave too. So glad he's back, yet heartbroken that he's really not. As for Fiona, I do like her, but I am very disappointed in her. However, she is allowed to make mistakes (which you can never control the outcome of). At the end of the day, SHE should have been in someone's college too. Her life was flipped upside down to raise children who are not her own. It's not fair for her, NOR Lip. The person I don't like and TRULY need to "die already" is that damn Frank. No children should have to fend for themselves this way - and this includes Fiona.

SpikedHoney You are very right. I'm not taking anything away from what she does for her family. I don't really have a reason to dislike Fiona. I just do. (It sounds stupid, I know). Maybe it's the actress... I don't know. Anyway as for Ian. Boy he is so lost. He's broken. And it's going to be a long way back. If he ever comes back at all. The only remedy I can see working is Mickey. Lets hope he puts his fears aside and steps up. Or better yet lets hope the writers don't screw us all over. ;) I read on Wikipedia that they're going to spend some time together. Lets wait and see. BTW English is not my first language so apologies in advance for any possible mistakes.

Amanda Sintra, first of all, let me be the one to say that there are ALOT of native English speakers who wished they could write as well as you. As for Fiona, I do like her. I hate the choices the character has made, but I have to remind myself that she's still a kid herself. I think of how I was in my early 20s, and I was pretty immature. I couldn't even have a pet, let alone fend for five children. As for the actress, I never met her to dislike her. As for Ian (assuming you meant him, not Lip), I think he's suffering from a mental illness. I think the situation with Mickey pushed him over the edge. I pray SOMEONE takes time to get him the help he needs. As for Mickey, he used to do Ian so wrong, that I didn't care for him. However, I must say I am starting to like him this season.

I don't think it has anything to do with women hating women. I just don't like the character. It's just the way it is. I have every reason to like her. In the end, she is a good person who has given up so much for her family. She's been mother and father to those kids for as long as she can remember. I can see and appreciate all that but I'm not drawn or sympathetic towards the character at all. And then there's Mickey, someone I have every reason to hate, who is rude and violent, who runs from his problems, who doesn't take responsibility for anything in his life, who has hurt Ian in more ways than we can say and yet I love him. I love this character, I love his struggles, I love the growth we're seeing in him. I feel drawn to him. It's just the way it is. I can understand people not feeling that way and that's ok. We're all different. And when I mentioned the actress, I wasn't talking about Emmy Rossum as a person, (How could I like or dislike someone I don't know?) I was talking about the choice for the role. Maybe if it had been other actress I would feel differently about it, I don't know. I honestly don't. It's about empathy really, regardless of people being perceived as good or bad, which in itself is subjective.

I'm pissed at Fiona for being so reckless and even thinking of having coke in the house let alone doing it and Liam getting into it, but I feel for her, she is truly sorry and hates herself for it. I hope that lip and Fiona can get back to the norm. And then there is Ian, he needs to get his shit together, since he is a minor, he can go to the Army and say "I was in a bad place emotionally and mentally and I stole my brothers identity" the worse that would probably happen would be that he isn't allowed to ever join in the armed forces. Plus, he needs to get back in school off the drugs!!

I'm not into this portrayal of bipolar disorder if that is where Ian's storyline is heading honestly, I feel like the show is so good at portraying nuanced and realistic issues that for this to be so stereotypical is a little disappointing to me. I don't know I just find that bipolar people are only shown one specific way and it's always extreme and over-dramatized in a way that takes away from the actual way it can play out in people's life? Which is dramatic in its own right so it doesn't need to be turned into such a caricature of the disorder for it to be interesting or entertaining really! Maybe it'll turn out alright but for now I'm not enjoying it.
@SpikedHoney
@SpikedHoney 10 жыл бұрын
akchills While I am assuming you or someone you know has bipolar, I have to say this is very true to life. I've had a close friend and a family member to go off the rails because of it. If they didn't show these moments, the truth of the matter is, it can EASILY go undetected. If you're asking for an "undetected" storyline, then I am not sure what type of plot you're seeking in this show. The friend was JUST fine, but as she got older (around Ian's age) she would say things that were a little "off." It was rare (and uncharacteristic of her since she was the "stable one"), but it did take me off guard. By the time she was about 25, she spoke in the voice of various personalities, became extremely hypersexual, sleep deprived and speaking nonsense. Then she was hospitalized. This sort of thing is very real, but the point is an undiagnosed person showing no symptoms, doesn't make an interesting storyline. In fact, I think people who haven't been exposed to mental illness will learn something from Ian's plight and could possibly detect it earlier.
@akchills
@akchills 10 жыл бұрын
SpikedHoney I definitely think an undiagnosed person with no symptoms would make for a boring story line, that's not what I'm talking about or what I would prefer at all. I just think that situations like what they're showing (or your friend) are pretty extreme examples of how bipolar disorder can play out and that's not how it manifests in a lot of people's lives. So personally for me just showing one way of how bipolar disorder can appear is actually very limiting and can make real life experiences harder to detect in a way as well (if your bipolar doesn't look like the extreme way it's portrayed in the media than it's hard for people to recognize the symptoms in their everyday lives even though they could be blatantly there, I think that's one of the reasons so many people are surprised when they get this diagnosis because they're behavior doesn't fit the stereotyped portrayal). My point is that I wish media would have more varied portrayal of mental illness (and that's something this show has done well with in the past) so that certain stereotypes and stigmas could be loosened, that doesn't mean symptoms have to be not be shown but they can manifest in so many different ways why not showcase that instead of always going for this extreme and over the top route?
@Clean0002
@Clean0002 10 жыл бұрын
Actually, they have done a very good job of portraying it and it is not a caricature at all. My brother is bi-polar so I know what it is like first hand and this show has done an accurate depiction. They have high highs and low lows and then the in between stage of being just fine. Monica was shown to exhibit all 3 of those. She was manic, then depressed, and she was also stable. The stages can also be triggered by something. Drugs are a huge trigger. Stressful life events are another. The stages can come on suddenly and go away just as quickly. You can also go from one extreme to the next. They haven't done a stereotypical portrayal. Many people who live with bi-polar go through rapid cycling. That is what Monica did and it looks like Ian as well. Others don't and only have bouts here and there but this type is very real and common among bi-polar individuals. I am glad they are showing it.
@akchills
@akchills 10 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying this isn't accurate to anyone with the disorder, I am just tired of the same portrayal of bipolar disorder always being shown, one that is more extreme, instead of a variation because not everyone's high highs and low lows look the same. That description can develop differently for everyone (and even changes depending on which type of the disorder you have) I think the show is nuanced enough that they could have showcased the disorder differently (while still holding true to the systems as well) and I thought they did a great job with Monica's portrayal. I too have first experience, and I know that bipolar disorder doesn't always look this way and that doesn't mean that the bouts are infrequent or the symptoms aren't showcased. The disorder can still be damaging and scary and dramatic without also being stereotypical, only showing one example of what someone with bipolar disorder looks like is damaging in my opinion.
