I cannot believe I just found your channel! I am 5 years natural and turning 55 years young this year! (woot!) and although my low porosity hair has grown to mid back length and longer than it has ever been in my WHOLE life I felt the need for more clarification and to get back to basics!! I have been using clay washes but just yesterday washed with Shea Moisture Moisture Retention...and yet felt the need for more hydration, even after deep conditioning. After watching a few of your videos now I understand why! I am going to put the methods you suggest into practice immediately because I want to see just how long and healthy my hair can be! If I ever get to New York again I will def look you up! Thanks again!

Also on another video you advised using shampoo with sulfate to deeply cleanse the hair since lo po hair is prone to build up. So I can use a sulfate free shampoo and still get my hair properly cleaned? I have twa by the way

I did not know Behentrimonium Chloride was a fragrance. I thought it was just for detangling the hair and emulsifier in products...according to my notes. I take a nerdy approach of looking up these words on each product in my book. I seek out emollients for my low porosity curly hair. By the way, you have wonderful teaching skills and a is beautiful attractive person as a role model of what you teach!!! 😊
@EmbraceNaturalBeauty9 жыл бұрын
+KJ Always Hi, you are correct, it is not a perfume. The point I am making is to find out what the first five ingredients are and if they are harmful to the hair. The process of elimination will make product selection easier. I can tell you are diligent in your selection process to make it work best for you. Thank you so much for your comments!!

+Embrace Natural Beauty I am trying hard to learn what the first 5 and make sure the rests meets the Curly Girl Method's standard and make sure those two long M words are not at the bottom and other allergens. Preferably Gluten free. Could you recommend hair gels for low porosity fine/ medium hair & medium density? Please. Now I am trying to learn about Quats.
@KJAlways7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I am not sure what you are speaking about. Behentrimonium Methosulfate was not the word I was speaking about. I was only speaking about the word from my hair products that I looked up to be an emulsifier and a detangeler. If you don't not believe me, I will be happy to do the research again and share it with you. I never said whether it was good or bad. I just mentioned the purpose of that chemical.

Hi Abena, I have a few questions about Aveda products in general as it relates to "our" hair, and was wondering if you would be able to discuss this in more depth in the future? I have found that using Aveda products as an entire regimen has been hit or miss because they have so many products to choose from and was wondering your thoughts on this beyond the products you mentioned in this video. Thank you!

My hair has loved SheaMoisture African Black Soap Deep Cleansing Shampoo and SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo since the spring of 2011, and still loves them since I have been a healthy natural since May 2013. Since last week, my hair has recently started loving SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo and SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Conditioner. I use SheaMoisture African Black Soap Purification Masque as a conditioner and deep conditioner, and my hair loves it. I need to restock it because I ran out last summer.

Thanks for that video, what do you think about the sulphate ingredient in the Aveda brilliant shampoo? I purchased both the shampoo and conditioner last night and woke up feeling to take it back because of the expense, and knowing that the stylist told me about the sulphate, and now a little more concerned after watching you video. Mind you I have yet to try this product, is it worth the extra change? And considering it includes an ingredient I should avoid? Whats you advice? I don't mind giving it a shot, but I need a little more detail on this product from someone whose used it more, this is my first purchase and time I've ever come across and taken interest in Aveda and it's nerve racking to me. Mostly because of the extra dime. Lol. What are you thoughts? And again thanks for the video, it was helpful regardless and it has made feel better on buying the brand regardless of what I just wrote, just need a little more tips on it. Thanks!

Great ingredients tips!! Just what I need right now. I don´t co-wash, however, I´d love to lay off the sulfate on my shampoos. But I´m not there yet. As I live in Brasil, the best products, in my opinion, are not available for me T.T I do have access to some great, but very expensive, brazilian brands. Once I have the money, I´ll definitely be more aware of the alcohol list to avoid. Thaaaank you =D

Hi, My name is Beatrice and need some help on a wash routine. I recently started learning how to swim and I practice about 6 times a week and my I used a clarifying shampoo at every wash and my hair is drying out really bad. I am not getting a lot of breakage, but the look of my hair is very dry. Just need some suggestions on how to clean chlorine out of my hair without drying it out. If you could provide some tips, I would greatly appreciate it.

I know some people use put conditioner or coconut oil on their hair before swimming to protect their hair from the chlorine. Maybe you could try that.

@tonyawoods85899 жыл бұрын
I found with Washngo's, your hair is always so tangled because you cant really come it and get the dead hair out. The natural shampoos/conditioners - with no washable silicones or whatever - just doesn't soften enough or have enough slip to get through the tangles.
@EmbraceNaturalBeauty9 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, I do not like conditioners if they don't have enough slip. Of the conditioners I have used, only the Tropic Isle Living Conditioner did not have slip. The inexpensive conditioners were great when used in high amount. The Aveda and Shea Moisture are very good with slip and moisture. I don't mind going the entire week without combing my hair. That is what makes the washngo so low maintenance. You achieve the look and maintain it for 5 to 7 days and then comb it on wash day with loads of conditioner. The struggle, the journey, :-)

How do you feel about silicones? My hair really hates dimethicone. Others do not bother me as much but I fear they block moisture on my low porosity hair.
@KJAlways9 жыл бұрын
I stopped using products that contained silicones since I start using the CG (Curly Girl) method. Silicones causes build up on Low Porosity hair, which does end up blocking moisture and end up with very dry hair. If you use silicones, you will need to use regular shampoos with sulfate in them to clean them out. Thankfully, they are not fatal to those who choose to use them. 😜
@kaylaollivierre69528 жыл бұрын
If say silicones should be used when your using heat as it provides protection from heat and helps prevent heat damage. Other than that you can avoid silicones when you aren't using heat.
@AlexciaLinette8 жыл бұрын
Sure you can, but really silicones is a synthetic oil...you can use it all the time but you must shampoo your hair with a mild to harsh sulfate. If you co-wash it won't remove all of the silicone therefore it will build up.

I'm very confused... You said that you're skeptical about sulfate shampoos (on your stop cowashing video), but you're recommending and saying that you use on your clientes a clarifying shampoo and a moisture retention shampoo that doesn't contain sulfates in it (talking about the shea moisture ones) so... ? I don't understand your opinion. Can you please explain me? because you're very contradictory
@EmbraceNaturalBeauty8 жыл бұрын
Hi, this video was made a year ago. At the time of the recording these were the shampoos I used as of the time. That is not a contradiction, it is an actual fact. I have since updated the products I use. I would love to update this video when I have time.
@arianawilliams13798 жыл бұрын
Tónia Neto I was about to post the same thing. And she said she doesn't clarify her hair that often but in the stop co washing video she said to clarity more often...in lost so do I clarify or not? And about how often do you do it now?
@EmbraceNaturalBeauty8 жыл бұрын
Ariana Williams Hi Ariana, it's best to clarify your hair according to product usage and lifestyle. If you apply heavy butters, oils and creams on your hair on wash day and reapply products through the week your hair can benefit from clarifying in order to remove the build up of product. Also if you working out and sweating in your scalp and use a dedicated cowash cleanser in between regular washing on wash day again you can benefit from clarifying. However I recommend moderation. Clarify once per week or every two weeks in order to remove product build up to increase moisture absorption. Let me know if that's clearer for you 😊
@arianawilliams13798 жыл бұрын
Embrace Natural Beauty yes I understand I did a little more research I was using only a moisturizing shampoo to wash my hair. I used the clay to "clarify" because I haven't found a good clarifying shampoo..my hair is really funny and a lot of products tend not to work because the have coconut oil or some other ingredient my hair doesn't like

I saw one of your products has dimethicone in it. How do you feel about cones?
@EmbraceNaturalBeauty9 жыл бұрын
NaturalCurls4Life Hi there! Thank you for your question! Silicones work well for sealing in moisture. They should ONLY be used with caution by people who avoid cleansing their hair with sulfates. Since I use shampoo that contains sulfates on a weekly basis, I can enjoy the benefits of the silicones without the risk of product buildup. And as an additional note, many people who avoid silicones are causing the same effect by applying product on top of product without thoroughly removing the buildup. This subsequently leads to dry, dull hair. I hope this helps! :-)
@naturalcurls4life5769 жыл бұрын
Embrace Natural Beauty Ok, so I cleanse my hair once a week with Bentonite Clay and I avoid Silicones. So I'm good right?
@EmbraceNaturalBeauty9 жыл бұрын
NaturalCurls4Life Yes, the clay cleanser is actually known for deep cleansing, so you should have a clean surface for absorbing moisture. How are you doing with moisture retention? Are you experiencing dryness?
@naturalcurls4life5769 жыл бұрын
Embrace Natural Beauty I co wash during the week and I redo my WnG on the 4th day due to dryness. However, it has improved as to how it feels on day 1. I have very dense, coarse hair, therefore very dry. It has gotten better.
@EmbraceNaturalBeauty9 жыл бұрын
NaturalCurls4Life I am happy to hear that you are cleansing once per week and getting more moisture to your hair by cowashing during the week. I am sure the additional application is working to improve your moisture levels. Let me know if you have any other concerns about your regimen. Blessings!
