A few weeks ago I went whale & dolphin watching and it was truly surreal to see these mammals where they truly belong. Any animal locked in captivity deserve the right to return to the wild. People say that whales, dolphins, etc look "happy" in aquariums or SeaWorld but the majority don't look at the animals eyes to see that they are depressed.

My God, you can't go to any SeaWorld-related video nowadays without seeing comment after comment of either extreme hate or 'free the orcas' speeches and arguments. Look, I truly understand why you all feel the way you do about SeaWorld in the wake of "Blackfish," but I feel that all of you are forgetting and/or neglecting to acknowledge something about SeaWorld: they truly and honestly SAVE wildlife. They participate in animal conservation. Many Florida manatees have been successfully rehabilitated and released back into the wild by SeaWorld. A gray whale calf that was separated from it's mother was successfully nursed back to health and released back into the wild. Those are just a few examples of how SeaWorld truly does play an active role in animal conservation. So why are people neglecting and/or ignoring that and just dumping tons and tons of hate? I understand that "Blackfish" had a profound effect on people (believe me, I saw it and it affected me, too), but are you all really going to let that movie dictate your lives? NO. DON'T. Look at BOTH sides of this. Be CRITICAL THINKERS. Don't just jump on the bandwagon. Look at both sides, analyze and evaluate the evidence that each provides, then come up with an informed, intelligent, well-rounded opinion.
@olgapristin773910 жыл бұрын
Nobody is diminishing SW rescue and rehabilitation work, but their treatment of orcas is quite another story, isn't it? So the video we are commenting on is Shamu show. So every time when we talk about orca show in SW you want us to mention SW efforts in rescuing manatees? I see both good and bad in SW, an will be its biggest supporter if they retire their killer whales and stick with manatees.
@velociraptor4you329110 жыл бұрын
Olga Pristin But what you saw in "Blackfish" is just ONE SIDE of the story. At least that's how it came across to me.
@velociraptor4you329110 жыл бұрын
***** I agree that it is difficult to know what's true or not in this matter after watching "Blackfish." From my perspective, the whole documentary looked to be very one-sided, not taking into account the other side of the debate.
@velociraptor4you329110 жыл бұрын
***** Another thing to consider is that because they've lived in captivity for so long, the orcas may not even know how to survive in the wild. They attempted that with Keiko (the orca who played Willy in the first "Free Willy" film), but he just kept coming right back to humanity.

The animals are treated with compassion and the shows at seaworld are meant to create a sympathetic view for the audience. Here's an ocean protecting tip, avoid plastic if you can, if not recycle and make sure you cut up the soda can wrappers because dolphins can suffocate if caught in them. The dolphins and whales are safer in seaworld from the dangers of human waste being dumped into the ocean. Don't hate on seaworld, Just spread the love for the ocean and work to better our world.

I guess crazy isnt the exact word i mean to say. What in trying to say is that he was obviously mad or agitated at the time of the attack, and it was not a ordinary thing for a wild killer whale to do. He also didnt kill for fod like you would expect a wild animal to do. But i dont think that we should compare killer whales to, snakes, or tigers. Each species have a different brains and mind set.

the reason i think there were so many attacks with water works is because they are wild animals and here they interact with them alot. i mean its not like if your in the ocean going whale watching and you see a orca your not going to jump into the water and go swimming right? i think if there people who were stupid enough to do that there would be attacks in the wild to,

If you call this a bathtub, you have never seen a bathtub. Or the pools Kshamenk and Lolita/Tokitae (respectively) live in. Please re-read my previous comment. I clearly stated "only in captivity do these altercations get so severe". It is pretty self-explanatory what I wrote. You admitted yourself there were reports of other fights before this last brawl so how is it possible SeaWorld was unwary of the malignity among the two? One may not want to do more work but if it is your responsibility to keep these animals safe than precautionary measure must and should be taken to secure their protection from one another.
@mariahmarx11 жыл бұрын
Apparently the New York Times did not give full detail of the fight. Yes, their previous fights were about dominance but that was not necessarily the case this time. Corky had shown intense interest in Kandu's one-year-old calf Orkid, which intensely agitated Kandu causing her to react so violently (previously aggression had been noted but nothing had been done "assuming" they would eventually learn to get along). The only other who made the mistake you speak of was SeaWorld. No surprise there
@mariahmarx11 жыл бұрын
FYI... Neglect does not only mean lack of attention, it also implies failure to care for properly (intense confinement, isolation, and lack of emotional & intellectual stimulation), or to omit through indifference or carelessness (avoiding confrontation amongst Orcas). Oppression is also defined as to be burden with cruel or unjust impositions or restrains (aquariums tanks are comparable in size to human prison cells), or to be keep subservient and in hardship (starved to ensure performance).
@Ebzy9610 жыл бұрын
If I knew nothing about SeaWorld, heard no rumors or whatever and saw this show with only my knowledge of marine mammals, I'd assume there was something wrong based on the flopping of the dorsal fin. I do wonder who decided using Orcas and Belugas in a tank made for 2 bottlenose dolphins. This came up on a suggested feed after I'd been watching documentary's on Orcas. :/ It's breaking my heart knowing that this is still practiced.

I think the entire idea of sea world stealing orcas from the wild came from back when sea world just opened and they stole whales but they have stoped and now all orcas at sea world are birn there tillikum was the last wild born orca at sea world and he was not even stolen by sea world

btw shamu, is not the same orca. the original orca as shamu passed away since 1971. since then, other orcas 'captives and breeding' took her place. shamu is just sadly a show name. @philorcinus135 жыл бұрын
You do realize they don't hear like we do, right? Hence why they use whistles and not their voices
@ayde928295 жыл бұрын
@@philorcinus13 Early studies published in 1972 suggested that the hearing range of killer whales was about 0.5 to 31 kHz. More recent studies show killer whales could hear sounds at frequencies as high as 120 kHz. Greatest sensitivity ranged from 18 to 42 kHz with the least sensitivity to frequencies from 60 to 120 kHz. In comparison, the range of hearing of a young, healthy human is 15 to 20,000 Hz (0.015 to 20 kHz). Human speech falls within the frequency band of 100 to 10,000 Hz (0.1 to 10 kHz), with the main, useful voice frequencies within 300 to 3,400 Hz (0.3 to 3.4 kHz). This mainly falls within a killer whale's hearing range. This information was lifted from the SeaWorld Site. Please use sources before you post. Anyway, they use the frequencies they do because they travel best within their environment. It's the same reason elephants use such low frequencies: because it trvels best over long distances. Have you heard of Mosquito noise anti-loitering deterrents? They work at high frequencies: and in some cases destroy ones' ability to hear those frequencies. Well, anyway, It's mainly audible by children and yong-adults who haven't ost the ability to her that frequency,yet. However, the noise works on adults, also, in mch the same way that Sound/Hz/ tone therapies work to calm a person: they produce feelings of agitation and misunderstood annyance. THIS is what happens to those whales: whose hearing encompasses the same range as ours', and then some.
@mariahmarx11 жыл бұрын
I just read another interesting fact. Corky immense interest in Orkid (Kandu one-year-old daughter) was mostly likely because Orky (Corky's 18 years life-long partner) fathered Orkid. Unfortunately, none of Corky and Orkys' 6 offspring survived leaving Corky all alone after Orkys' passing in 1988. Corky must of somehow felt his presence in his offspring leaving Kandu jealous and triggering her attack. Just like with humans... baby-momma drama.
@mariahmarx11 жыл бұрын
Do a little more research and you will find the full story. At any event, I just finished reading the New York Time version of the incident and it states in paragraph 6 "The two whales had been aggressive toward one another since they first met years ago and should have been kept apart". So yes, SeaWorld did have control over it and could of avoided this tragedy.

I don't know if anybody understands this, but if these animals were to be released back into the wild they would most likely not survive. They've been living in captivity for most of there lives. Yes there have been accidents which SeaWorld has been trying to get over and make their park better. Until I see proof that SeaWorld actually abuses their animals I will support them.
@TurpeinenRebecca10 жыл бұрын
There hole existence in these pools are abuse. Everything about it. The isolation, the taking babies from their mothers, the bad diets, the anti-social family structures they are forced to live in, the being bounced around between different parks, the being force-bred with their uncles, the forcing of a very young female to live with an overly sexual uncle who tries to rape her, the allowing of bullying. Seriously, that is not enough abuse for you? If I keep a dog in a small cage for its entire life and take everything that comes natural to it away (but don't worry, I will remember to feed it) is that NOT abuse?
@kdelain2110 жыл бұрын
Becca Tripp You do realize that almost all the whales were born at SeaWorld?? Yes Tilikum was taken from his native homeland and I do agree that was wrong. They are very rarely bounced from park to park, the babies stay with their mothers until there old enough to be on their own, they get fed every single day, and its a balanced diet... About the breeding..well people do it with dogs, and cats, and all sorts of animals to get the "perfect" pet. They don't force the whales to mate, but yes they put them in a tank together in an attempt to mate them. I dont see any of that as abuse because people all over the world do it. Now if the trainers were to physically force the animals to mate then I would consider it wrong, but seeing as they don't....
@TurpeinenRebecca10 жыл бұрын
Kaitlyn Moody Of course I know most are born at the parks. And you clearly believe everything seaworld tells you so there isn't really much more to say. And they do physically force them to mate, either by artificial insemination (in whales that are often too young when you compare them to whales in the wild) or by putting them in tiny pools with oversexed dominate males. And they do take babies from there mothers when they are young. This has been proven, videotaped at seaworld. A mother that wasn't performing well because her 2 year old kept on getting in the way. They removed the 2 year old and the mother couldn't stop crying. It is NOT a balanced diets, they only get dead fish and artificial stuff. Some whales in the wild are carnivores so by denying them meat they are giving them the wrong food. And if everything is so great, why does every single whale have scars something you don't really see in the wild? And last but not least, just because animal abuse happens in other parts of the world, doesn't make it ok.
@olgapristin773910 жыл бұрын
Kaitlyn Moody pleeeeese educated yourself before making a comment. Do you know that in the wild male orcas stay with their mothers their WHOLE life? Whole life? Withing several feet? Well known fact. And you are talking about "babies old enough to be on their own"? Are you kidding? Tilikum is masturbated on a regular basis, yes, put him in medical pool, force him to turn on his back and collect the sperm - it's fine with you, right? Yes,they are bred through artificial insemination. They breed female orcas at the age they will NEVER breed in the wild - way too young. Duh, because they don't live long in captivity. They interbreed, quite all right as well? So where do we draw a line really?

SO keep the dolphins wild, keep the whales and proposes wild, keep the turtles, manatees, seals, and penguins wild. It makes sense to help out our animal friends, but once they are better let them go! Don't make them perform for our entertainment. I am not agents SeaWorld, I am agents captivity.
@Asims680111 жыл бұрын
They're not abused. You consider them abused because they are in captivity. However, abuse, for the most part, is not in these parks. Marine attractions, such as aquariums for example, have been used as a way for animals to escape poaching and fishing vessels. Let me ask you this, would you like to expose these creatures to death by those issues or would you rather have them in captivity so that people could learn to have more appreciation for them?

I wonder how greedy humans would feel about being treated like these beautiful animals that belong in the wild where they should be, Us humans often forget that we are animals too and the world dose not go around Us. weather the Whale is happy or not we should often think more other than are selves. lets face it we are being selfish in this way. I don't really refer to "Blackfish" because of the films flaws, these animals do eat and they do live. We as humans don't think about us harming animals but when an another mammal harms us we often freak out. we have to think that this is apart of how life works and we need to stop being selfish and think of more than ourselves so please don't leave mean comments because I could care less about you because most likely are a selfish greedy human.

I really do feel so bad for those babies. I went to sea world in san diego back in 1998 and I left with a lump in my throat thinking what those animals have to go through just to eat and being kept in a pool that is the equivalent of a bathtub for us, it's sickening. Congress should pass a law putting a stop to this garbage. They have a right to live in their natural enviroment instead of being ripped away from their mother's & siblings.

i dont get how people can say they are happy in a tank for 25 years. this things need to be with there family and swim happily not be be kidnapped from their family and do the same shit everyday just to entertain a bunch of people and go back their boring tank... smh

Breeding for profit and entertainment does not qualify as any sort of conservation effort. Animals, let alone, emotionally intelligent ones, should never be separated from family and kept in bathtubs. Why do humans elevate themselves so much and care so little about other cohabitants? We should be learning from these majestic creatures instead of ENSLAVING them!
