Thank you for being a kind human to this Mantis. But please, please -- give Kiwi a "real terrarium" -- plants, perhaps some wood branches, moss. Something like she'd live in if in the natural world, and not helping you get millions of views and lots of $$ from her captivity. ☻ I think it's the least you could do. 건배 !

They have this intelligence about them that is eerie, too. I rarely see them but found one and it was so cute, studying me like an alien learning about humans. I brought him inside and let him hang out on my bed while I was watching videos. I took him back outside later and set him on the ledge where I found him. When I got back inside I walked past my dresser mirror and there he was, on my head 😂🤣 he had to have jumped on as soon as I turned to walk away! Adorable.

As someone who has studied and kept insects for many years, I can say with absolute certainty that your friend here truly loves and trusts you! Being able to survive so many stages is an incredible feat, and the fact that they survived goes to show not only how strong kiwi is, but how well cared for they are! I've read somewhere that Mantis ain't able to "love" or feel anything. They behead their partner after sexual intercourse is what I also read. Trust? Yes, of course and the Mantis seem to know that the human protects him but don't you think that it's maybe just because of survial and not because of feelings? I'm an amateur to insects so I really just heard that little story. If you know more please let me know.

It's true. Every time I reach out to a mantis, it reaches out to climb on or just hops on my hand. And often will try to climb up to a shoulder and enjoy the ride until I make a point of dropping it off. They don't run/fly away, or just simply ignore you, and never bite either. From behavior alone it appears they enjoy interacting with humans, and at the very least, they certainly don't see us as a threat since they have a recognizable threatened stance and people don't cause it. On top of that, the way they actually turn their head to make eye contact makes it seem like they might actually kinda understand what we are? Definitely the most sociable insect around in my experience.

@@SkyCandyVisuals Yes, she must have been both - pregnant and full grown when I found her. However, now that I think back, it may have been that the ootheca she left behind was a dud because I can’t say with certainty that baby mantids came teaming out after her demise (sorry - it was years ago!🤷🏻‍♀️) So it’s possible she WASN’T pregnant and female mantids still lay a ootheca before they die but it’s not viable! I did purchase a mantis egg case soon after and was able to video the “birth”…or “hatching” of 100’s of babies! Now THAT was cool! So many tiny babies teaming out all at one, heading for my rose bushes! It didn’t occur to me to save a few babies and try to raise them…they were SO small - how could they be fed…or contained? As it was, I ended up visiting them in the roses until they were all disbursed. But what great fun and a learning experience!

wow praying mantis dying after laying eggs? that's sad and uncommon (depending on the species); in Spain female mantis keep mating with males and laying eggs from late august til late September and then they spend October slowing their metabolism down more each day until they die.

I have always been fascinated by the praying mantis. They have such a regal, calm demeanor- very soothing to watch. I was graced by a mantis this year on one of my potted plants in the front yard. I was using a gentle stream of water and he poked his head out as if to chastise me for getting him wet! I got closer, took pictures and was amazed that he very graciously posed and turned his head to get his “ good side”. Now that I’ve seen your video- I think I’ll continue to watch from afar…gathering food is a bit daunting ( but your care & feeding of your mantis really shows a wonderful side - mostly hidden- of caring human kind! He hopped onto one of my big pots (I had just put my tomato plant into it) and inspected it then watched me dump the sand top layer off my house plant. He waited a minute and decided how to go about inspecting the sand then jumped into it and wandered. He ended up jumping onto another new pot and watched me. Everytime I moved him away so that I didn’t accidentally step on him, he popped back up somewhere near me and was watching me.

I had a mantis as a kid. Honestly one of the best animals a young guy can have if he has to take one from the wild. It was easy to take care of. I gave it water dishes and caught basement crickets to feed it. He was super chill and always happy to just hang out on my shoulder. Sometimes because the enclosure (glass jar) didn't take up much room I would take him to a friend's house and let them enjoy him too. I waited until he grew big and strong over the course of a year or so and then let him go back into the wild. Was an awesome pet. PS. I also sometimes fed him Kentucky Fried Chicken and I swear he loved it!!

I just love how this show that the mantis actually learned through trial and error. Like, they need to think about a situation to solve it! Its not just hardwired in them. Some of it is, like striking out at moving prey, but they still needed a few tries to figure out how to grasp this new sort of pray, and they actually did it! Same with the water. At first they did not grasp the consept, but after a little while they noticed the water and realized to drink instead of strike. It may not sound like much, being able to drink after a few tries. But the fact that they can learn and solve problems...thats amazing!! Yeah, they may not be as clever as a crow, or a horse, or even a snake, but there is indeed something there. They are not biological robots, and that fills me with joy.^^

Every creature, including insects have intelligence. I once made friends with an Eastern Parson spider that lived in my kitchen. One day, out of curiosity, I put down water for her in a little cap. She seemed to understand what is was as she dipped her front foot in & cleaned off her foot then got more water. It was so cool to watch her. Whenever I was in my kitchen, she would come out and watch me cook. I had to put her outside when she came out while my husband was doing the laundry. LOL. She was a pretty big spider & it was a shock when she came out to watch him.

Now you've done it -- got me sad at missing my mantis from years back. Rock was the size of a mosquito when we took it in. Six instars later, Rock was flying across the room to hang out on the exposed brick wall. And was getting a little scary aggressive. One day I was surprised by a foamy ball on Rock's main stick, and it turned out to be an ooth. I remember shouting out loud, "Rock is a GIRL!?!!!" I miss her, especially when she'd grab a cricket under each arm at the same time, and bite off the head first. Don't mess with a female mantis : ).

Many years ago I went on a hike in Northern Italy. I was just taking a rest in a meadow when a large praying mantis sat down on a blade of grass, less than 1 meter in front of me. She turned out to be very curious, watching me very carefully from top to bottom. Her eyes, each with apparently 2 pupils, amazed me very much. Then she fixed my face. A kind of telephathic conversation ensued. This is not an invention, not a lie. Translated into words, it was about: "What are you? Look, this is me. We do nothing, no animosity." Of course they weren't words, but between us there was a tension that just showed: curiosity and nobody eats the other. That took about 10 minutes. As it flew away, I felt a surge of astonishment at the communication of nature. I never experienced anything like it in the next 40 years. It overwhelmed me. I will never forget that.

It is possible to bring intuition to a level like telepathy, some people can communicate with animals Laila del monte for exemple. @@brianbanks9858 You can be grateful for this gift. And proud too, because the dog has shown you great confidence. I live in Switzerland. In some hospitals and clinics, animals are used as full-fledged therapists. This is not a joke, nor is it a glorified perception, but a pure fact. Dogs, especially Golden Retriviers, can smell the smell of various types of cancer. Doctors cannot diagnose properly because blood, urine, and other tests are unclear. A trained dog, including a handler, is brought to the patient. In the first phase, the animal sniffs incessantly (in the case that I have observed) at the breasts and abdomen of the sick woman, he briefly looks at the doctor, then he rested his head calmly on the woman's chest and gives gentle pressure on the breast nodes . The loving face and body expression of the Golden moved me to tears. The patient also wept for the love she felt. (The woman has both breasts amputated and one ovary removed. She survived; Today, after 20 years, you can see her walking her Tibetan dog every day in the village. She can laugh again. A big, heavy old cat lived in a drug rehab. 19 years old. His name was Puma because he was pitch black and anything but a cuddly toy. He defended his place on the sofa in the lounge. He couldn't be petted; Anyone who tried it got a few scratches on hands. Whenever the patient cried, or rolled over and over in bed, or suffered from withdrawal pains, Puma promptly appeared and lay down with him. Sometimes on his stomach and I've seen him lying on a woman's face before. A nurse was often on vacation in Canada. From there she always brought a cloth bag full of a special grass. That was the biggest thing for Puma. He took the bag with him in his sleeping basket, where he wet it with a lot of storage, then sniffed the spicy aroma. Immediately afterwards he was visibly stoned. At least as if he'd smoked a good joint. He squinted in those moments. We sat around him and gave him the reward he deserved. These are 2 really true stories that the laying wrote. Was for a beautiful world!

@@davidhayes3257 You are absolutely right. I made this observation in Rimini (I) in 1993. Before my eyes, at a height of about 2 meters, a thick hornet (approx. 2 cm) and a white praying mantis (approx. 10 cm) collide and immediately fought each other. The "Kneuel fell to the ground. For the time being, I was sure that the hornet would win, because because of the contractions in the body I assumed that it had stabbed several times. That was probably a mistake. The mantis clung to it. The cruelty of the mantis could. It was a mistake." I almost can't get it. Within a minute she beheaded the "poor victim" with her scissor jaw. Then she began to hollow out the upper part of the body. The hornet squirmed for 10-15 seconds in agony. Sometimes nature demonstrates the true concern for "eating and being eaten" Unfortunately, there weren't any smartphones with cameras back then.

Please be careful when phrasing such things. Rarer varieties of manti are currently subject to illegal capture and sale worldwide as cute novelty items, and it often ends in tragedy. Manti aren't "easy" to keep, they require very specific conditions to thrive depending on their sub-species. Keeping any animal is only "easy" when you know what you're doing thanks to research and help from experts. I was so sad but kiwi reminded how great they are and now I want another . I will be looking this spring and hopefully I can find an egg sack and watch them hatch .

We bring in a lucky mantis nymph from our garden every year. We keep them well fed with houseflies, spiders and roaches and let them drink from our finger. We even treat them to fresh apple juice occasionally! They LOVE it 💕 In winter we house them in our water heater cabinet to keep them warm. Our female ones lay a succession of 9-10 Ootheca before they expire. It’s always so heartbreaking when they die but we try to give them the best lives. They are super super adorable and feisty with very distinct personalities 🥰

OMG I was here for 21 minutes watching a green mantis grow up and the process was amazing to watch and I had to put it in the captions so I could see what it said because of course it’s in Japanese and I cannot read Japanese so I was just reading and reading and reading and reading and reading and reading so it took me so long to read all of it but I understand it all now and I just love seeing the green mantis grow up and also hunting all of those pets and bugs. I’m sorry I meant.Pests I was also getting worried that kiwi was getting sick because the tick might have carried a disease or something. I don’t know a lot about bugs but all I know is that some of them can deserve to be bad but some of them are just so cute and I love them, I really love how you took care of that mantis I can’t forget about it. Thank you for taking care of it and thank you for giving me a little bit of exploring wildlife cause without this, I would even know the process of a green mantis

I had one if these as a pet back in the '90s. She was captive bred and quite friendly with beautiful colors. After her third moult she sprouted wings, and occasionally would produce egg sacs that looked like a little hornets nest. Naturally they were dormant as there were no males around, but it was interesting to see up close 😃👍
