The fact that he compared himself to Jenna Marbles is hugely hilarious to me. No way in hell is Shame anywhere near Jenna. Jenna is articulate, caring, and intelligent. She genuinely was heartbroken that she might have hurt people, and made the choice to apologize/leave on her own. Shame only ever apologizes when he can profit off of it, either by financial benefit or social/status benefit.
@SteviiLove3 жыл бұрын
And she's still gone while he's back. If he truly wanted to take a lesson from her book, he'd realize he shouldn't have come back ever and officially retire. Jenna didn't do even a fraction of the horrible things he did but she's still gone more than a year later which just solidifies to me how genuinely remorseful she is while Shane has only solidified to me he didn't learn a single thing from this.
@primroseprom3 жыл бұрын
@@SteviiLove I think that it’s important to note that Jenna had already been thinking about leaving and took her situation at the time as the cue to leave. She’s also a lot less greedy than Shane, which is why in the event that she ever comes back (which I partially believe she never will unless something happens and she believes she can use her influence to make a serious difference), it’ll be a long time from now. Shane on the other hand, never wanted to leave in the first place. And it’s important to note that, as the original commenter here pointed out, Shane only left and only apologized in the first place because it was financially better for him to do so. And from the moment he left he was already planning his return and *that,* no matter how Shane Dawson or his stannies will try to spin it, doesn’t say “growth” in any way, shape, or form.

I've struggled with depression my entire life due to abuse from my parents (though we're on good terms now) and seeing that shit hurt bad, even though I was still a kid who didn't fully understand those concepts, I saw myself in the people he was punching down at. There are no actual consequences in the end so there is no learning from their mistakes or holding themselves accountable.
@jackief10383 жыл бұрын
The issue is most of his audience are white teens to those in their early 20s, who don't understand the true issue of Shane's racist past. That apology was not for most of his audience to accept. Shane didn't hurt most of the people that watches him, so when he came back that part of his audience, that doesn't understand the impact of his racist issues, forgave him immediately. The only reason I say his audience doesn't understand his racism is because they just don't experience not necessarily that they are unable to intellectually understand it. I do agree with the fact that the only reason these big youtubers can come back is because of their fan base, because that's what made them big in the first place.

There was no setup and punchline to his “shock humor” because it’s literally just him saying shocking things. I think this became even more obvious in his horror series when he clearly was attempting to be funny without the shock factor and it just turned into a bunch of adults giggling over nothing to try to convince the audience that Shane’s hilarious.

And seriously, compare these attempts at covering one's ass to The Kubz Scouts's singular, genuine, purposeful, well thought out apology for muuuuch less than this. Night and day difference. I mean, the comment section was almost entirely people that are themselves black PRAISING him and his apology and thanking him for doing it. Like, I have literally never seen that kind of video have anywhere near that positive a reception, especially from the people it's about, and especially especially on the internet. Know why? Because he took responsibility, acknowledged that while he didn't have malicious intent what matters is that harm was done, pointed out that this apology is specifically for the affected group and no one else to accept or not accept and that it's very much ok for them to not accept it and ditch him, repeatedly emphasized all of those things, and more. Basically, he did everything Courtreezy has always told people is important in such apologies and even made direct eye contact with the camera as he did so. The whole situation proves it is more than possible to do this right and not only fix the whole ordeal but actually earn respect for doing so. It's not that these people CAN'T. They REFUSE to. They try to PRETEND to do it without actually doing it because they completely CHOOSING not to do what's necessary. It's not inability, it's unwillingness. It's not just "famous youtubers", it's the elite, the rich and anyone considered "profitable" by large corps. Bad publicity is still publicity as they say and Shane brings huge traffic. It's deplorable, but it's a direct and inevitable result of our various cultures' obsessions with "fame" and money in our modern late stage capitalist societies.

That’s not true in all cases and there are stories of people actually being held to account. If you want a story of a corporation being held to account and losing everything because they were being scummy, look at Acclaim Entertainment. It’s not even really blackface, which is incredibly offensive on its own, it’s more like minstrel shows. Which are straight up from the early to mid 1900s made to fully just mock and stereotype black people. In my opinion, that’s even way worse. Not sure if this is an American thing only?

The same thing happened here in the UK. Minstrel shows were popular until the 70s but TVs shows continued to show actors in blackface. When I see apologise like this it makes me realised that a lot of people don't know how to apologise. I know that seems like an obvious statement but I mean that they genuinely think this is what apologising looks like and everyone who thought it was a good apology doesn't know how to apologise either. When you are giving a heart felt apology to someone you've wronged and it wasn't an accident, your apology should be a straight forward "I'm sorry for what I did, I'm sorry I hurt you, I was wrong, tell me how I can make it better". But shanes apologise come with disclaimers that he's not going to make excuses and he then proceeds to make excuses. It comes with a bunch of exposition and distractions. It comes with explanations on the way it made HIM feel. And what I think it all comes down to is pride and an inability to admit you were wrong. A lot of people say they can admit when they were in the wrong but it is a lot harder that it sounds, especially when you're stubborn. That's how you get apologise with excuses, because they're trying to convince themselves that they're not fully in the wrong and what they did wasn't as bad as it seems and it wasn't their fault. It's to soothe their self image.

He knows how to gain the system (yet always whined about not being on trending ugh), he always had. I’m going to coin a new term here and say that Shane’s personal “alignment” is “monetary evil”. Let me explain. So the way he seems to view what he did (or how he justifies what he did to himself) looks something like “my fans weren’t mad/offended -> so I continued to make money from it -> therefore what I did wasn’t wrong or that bad because I continued to make that money -> and if it was truly as bad as others said then I clearly wouldn’t have made that money -> but since I did then that proves that my actions were justified” With each apology he just gets better at masking this logic, which is why he keeps getting progressively more vague about what he did so he doesn’t have to address how he actually feels or giving any concrete explanation of his true thoughts. Which is manipulative at best and *very* close to the logic of an abuser at worst.

I distinctly remember my older sister sitting and watching shane’s old videos with me. I didn’t understand the vulgar humor one bit, I was far too young, maybe 10? 11? My dad heard what was being played and he scolded her, told her to never play it around me or in general. A big thank you to my dad for protecting me from what I could’ve possibly been exposed to, because a lot of what shane has done and gotten away with is SO vulgar. Unfortunately, my sister still watched his videos and I was still somewhat subjected to the foul humor as a result. My sister was probably 15-16 talking about all sorts of gross, unimaginable things. His apologies have always come across as tone deaf and fake, but it doesn’t matter, people will still feed his ego and pockets.

Which I am grateful that I am learning how to be a better human and how to respect other people properly. But yeah, I grew up in a REALLY good school district in the United States... and we were never taught about blackface. While maybe the city you lived in or your state may have done a good job with education, you can't really argue that the ENTIRE country is full of good school districts... cause let's be honest... our educational system is shit 😂 and our country can be pretty racist... it shouldn't be a surprise that maybe some people really didn't know better in the past. I watched Shane growing up. I saw Fred is dead when it was first uploaded. I kept watching Shane until his latest cancellation. It felt so weird seeing what he did 10 years later as an adult because as a child I laughed at all of his videos. Shanayay was my favorite character of his when I was 12. I didn’t see an issue when I was 12 and I thought the apologies were enough when I was 16. I was conflicted about whether it was right for me to stop supporting someone who I at one point really liked when I was one of the people laughing at his racism. Somewhere along the way, I realized that though they were “just” videos, they’re part of what made it okay to make fun of me for my hair, my nose, my skin - for being black. At 23, I just don’t think I can get past that.

I was never so happy and unhappy to be so early. That face at the beginning will haunt my dreams. But jokes aside I found your channel randomly and am absolutely bingewatching every single video. You're amazing dude, thank you for the amazing entertainment

It’s crazy how different Shane seems. He used to be a lot more emotionless and just cold. Now he portrays himself as a sensitive guy with major insecurities. He just seemed a lot more cold. And turned more manipulative when he realized that wasn’t working and he needed to soften up.

And what’s really sad. Shane was the ONLY KZbinr I had ever bought merch from. Literally the only one. I asked for one of his sweatshirts for Christmas. Really messed up man. I will never forgive him.
