Ive worked on fishing boats. Ive worked on longliners and trawlers. Ive seen how many sea birds came up on hooks, dead. Mostly petrals and dozens per day. I imagine every long liner is pulling up dead birds everyday. Trawlers only occasionally catch birds. And that is when sprags of wire in the steel head lines spike the birds and drag them down. Dolphins generally are too smart to be caught in trawlers as the can see what is happening and can feel the pressure wave in front of the trawl. I imagine dolphins and other marine mammals are mainly caught in set nets of fine nylon monofilament which is not picked up by their sonar. Set netting should be banned outright with gill netting. Purse seine netting is said to be responsible for dolphin deaths in tuna fisheries, so i imagine it is the same for purse seining in general. There is much that could be done. There has been a lot of talk over the recent decades but the industry seems as slippery as the fish in fending off regulatory processes to protect wildlife impacted by the fishing industry.
