If you mark the center of your circle, you can put a screw into it. Tie a piece of twine to it and the other end to your jigsaw. Obviously, you have to adjust the length to get your blade along the edge of your circle but it is pretty helpful in keeping you from straying too far off course. I do this all the time for subwoofer cutouts on enclosures.

I saw this tip on another channel. If you don't have the immediate want or capabilities to cut the pilot hole prior to cutting the circle as shown in the video it's completely possible to plunge cut with a jigsaw. Simply start the saw with the shoe up on the front edge and the blade above the wood and then slowly plunge the blade into the surface keeping a firm grip, while keeping the front of the shoe steady against the wood. I tried it and it works great.

Very nice tutorial, knackers! Pro tip from the construction yard: If you don't have an inverted blade but you need your cut to be 100% clean, hold your machine upside down in a vice, switch and lock it on, and use the base plate as a sawing table. This way, your blade will pull into your visible surface. This is not safe, not good for the machine. But it'll get the job done.

Hello, new subscriber here. Just want to say thank you for this informational tutorial. I am a newbie to using power tools, and doing "DIY" woodworking projects. Started out using cardboard for my personal projects but, have developed a curiosity for woodworking. Been wondering how a jigsaw works and now I know because, of this video. I made my first (cable spool) foot ottoman a few weeks ago. My daughter was so impressed she has requested a coffee table ottoman and, 2 smaller sitting ottomans for her home. My children have always been my greatest incouragers when it comes to learning new things. With the right supplies I have confidence I will fulfill her wishes. However, I need to get a jigsaw...so your tips about blades helped to encourage me to move forward with my decisions. 😏😊💝

If I had to choose only 2 power tools for the rest of my life it would be a drill or maybe impact driver and a circular saw. One to cut wood and one to screw em together ! I was making push sticks and had a hell of a time with my jigsaw trying to make curved cuts and the blade wasnt cutting straight down but now I see I shouldve used my thin scroll blades. Was having a lot of binding issues and non square cuts. I got a dad joke. Whats the difference between a hippo and a zippo? One weighs a lot and the other one is... A little lighter.. @@loganmedia4401 I agree. A circular saw makes more sense for long straight cuts. Especially if you are doing it often. I got my jigsaw and it's slow. Especially on hardwood. For years I have been against buying a jigsaw because I didn't use it to warrant buying one. I use a corded 7 1/4" circular saw very often, but in some instances I would like one smaller to make some tasks easier and/or safer. I wanted a cordless one to make it even easier, but there is not one available I liked and I was weary of buying a tool just to use it a few times. I got to thinking maybe I should reconsider the jigsaw because it is light weight and I can use it for these few tasks and use it or other things. I know it still would not be the perfect tool for these tasks, but it can be done and it would be the more versatile.

I'd also say with all saws, buy good blades. You can use a cheaper saw, but, a cheap blade will bring out the cussing because they get dull so fast, which puts more strain on the tool and makes the cut rougher. Also faster saws tend to work a bit better.

On my jigsaw you have to press in the side button to be able to press the trigger and it has no locking option. This is presumably intended as an additional safety feature in that if the operator loses their grip on the tool for any reason it will power down. Unlike my deadly angle grinder where although it is really hard to turn on by accident once on the switch locks into place. That thing is scarier than the circular saw.

Makita jigsaws are great to use, especially the barrel bodied ones. Their blower function I couldn't do without as it lets you see the cut line clearly unlike others. Dust collection is rubbish on most jigsaws though. You have to go to festool for better dust collection if you need it. Good vid, as a pro user even I learned something.

This is an excellent video - I once tried using my late Dad's Jigsaw that he have must have bought in the 1970's. Needless to say I hated it and made a bit of a mess and the saw was a bit noisy and jumpy. Your video has helped me enormously and I am going to buy something more up to date using the pointers you have indicated. Thank you very much!

thanks for this, it's been really helpful. There's enough of the right kind of detailed explanation on the how to and the why and then it's backed up with a demo. Off to buy my jigsaw and give a few little projects a go. I still can't drill a hole to hang a picture in a brick wall however, I don't know why...
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 2 жыл бұрын
No worries at all Kerry and good luck with the jigsaw 👍 To hang that picture, drill a 6mm hole with a masonry drill bit with your drill on the hammer setting and then simply insert a 6mm plastic wall plug that you screw the wall fixture into. Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺

I'm a 66 year old woman. Since my handyman older brother died, I've had 2 tackle home repairs on my own. I have a miter saw (not so scared of) and a circular saw (quite leary of). In looking at a jigsaw, I thought, y can't I use this instead? It arrived just as I was finishing up replacing a step on my back porch. I had 2 cut up the old lumber, so I put it 2 the test. Went right thru it. Granted, it took 10 sec, rather than 2.5, but who cares. I like it. Ordered a variety of blades 2 play with. I feel much safer.

As a visual learner and maker, I usually have an undeserved amount of confidence going into projects. Diving in head first with little to no experience whatsoever …in the case of power tools however, I figured it might be beneficial to get some knowledge and insight first. 😅 I don’t feel like lopping a finger off today!😂

Thanks Sheri 👍 When your blade wanders off course, make sure the machine is at full speed but slow down your feed which is how fast you push the machine. Let it do all the work for you. Your job is just to guide it which does take a little practice 😁👍 Thanks for watching and may you and the family have a safe and Merry Christmas 👍😁🇦🇺🎄🎄🎄

Great video, Knackers. I needed it pointing out to me recently that you need to make sure you've got the orbital action set to 0 for intricate work with one of those scroll blades. You lose a lot of the effect of the thin blade if it's orbiting all over the place. Time to dust off my jig-saw - probably the second tool I ever bought.. New blades too I reckon :)
