I used this video 7 years ago to install a jet kit in my Shadow 750. Now I'm back and doing a rebuild on that same bike, as it's developed a massive lean condition at high RPM. As an instructor in many topics myself, this is a great example of how to teach. Thanks for sharing such great info with us!

GREAT video- I'll be watching it again when I pull the carbs from mine. It sat for three years and has issues. Backfires when attempting to rev and won't reach higher RPM. Just to make it fun, figured I'd install a jet kit during the clean/rebuild. EXTREMELY well done and you are a VERY good at being an instructor.

Talk about thorough, this guy pays such great attention to detail, when wrehcing on motorcycles it SO incredibly important to ensure things, especially carburator are set to spec and inspected properly as well, you can do everything right and have one small thing that you made a mistake on and the bike will not ride properly, to be a great mechanic you pay pay special attention to detail and take no shorts. These are great video series

Good little video and class. Also the Shadow 750 is a very little known/underestimated performer. In stock trim we see them make around 38-40 HP at the rear tire. This is far from exhilarating but can be easily increased. A set of good 2" drag pipes or 2 1/4" cruiser pipes, simple modification of the stock air box (Google "BeanBox mod") and Stage 2 jet kit will yield 43-45 HP at the wheel and is a VERY noticeable difference on a 500lb machine, especially since power is up everywhere from 2800-6200 RPM vs stock. This puts the VT750 Shadow square in the 1/4 mile territory of HD Sportsters, Yamaha Bolt, Sabre/Shadow 1100 etc with mid 14 second passes being the norm. If you want to take it further, JE produces 10:1, 10.5:1, 11:1,11.5:1 & 12:1 Pistons for our Shadow factory bore sIze. (11-11.5:1 is about ideal for 93 pump gas) At the time of adding new pistons, take the time to smooth the intake ports/runners on the stock heads. (Remove any/all casting flaws) After re-assembly, do the "4* timing mod", go up one step colder than factory for the spark plugs, and re-jet the carb again. (This time individual jets will need to be ordered, not a kit) It is also reccomendsd at this time to go with a "Hyper Charger" type of airbox or an open element K&N style filter for maximum flow. I personally switched to a single carb setup ala the 2006 Aero model, just to make tuning the bike easier. When all is said and done you end up with a lightweight and nimble Honda Shadow with over 60 HP at the rear tire and an incredible power curve. Total cost if you can do the work yourself is about $1500, pipes included. After this newfound power a sprocket change will be the next logical step, Aero owners will not see the most gains unfortunately due to shaft final drive. For those people just put some good hypoid gear oil in your shaft housing and call it good! For the Spirit and other chain driven guys, add that new power to the proper gearing and you can see 12.9x quarter mile ETs in the 110-112 MPH range with a 1.8x 60ft on stock Aero tire sizes (120/160 F/R) It's about as fast as I would want to go on such a small, low riding cruiser! Cheers to the Shadow!

Great video, and very informative and helpful. Fun fact for gear heads: Japan uses JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) which looks similar to Philips, but there are fitment differences between the bits -- which is why those screws were hard to get out. Philips head screwdriver with JIS screws. It's a sloppy fit.

I've been watching your videos. your are a great instructor. I feel I must share a story with you, I wish every dealership hired good mechanic. I had Honda install my jet kit when I customized my vt750c shadow aero. after the bike sitting for two years I am getting it ready for the road again I pulled the carburetor to clean it out and found countersink screws in place of a Machine screw. can you believe that. and the chock. mount was broken and glued back together witch had now failed. so after hundreds of dollars later to fix the factory's mess up its working great now. I wish the 500 lb Gorilla never touched my shadow aero . keep up the good work

I did substantial hands on jetting to a 2003 spirit. The smaller main jet goes in the rear as that cylinder gets hotter and thus, less dense air....also, the Dyno-jet needles were way-too aggressive in taper. i used the stock honda needles and the bike ran like a top from idle to full-on in 5th gear a whopping 126mph. great class to take and good teacher.

Excellent video(s) Shane. While taking off the slide cap, I noticed your advice on the phillips screw fastener, risk of stripping, and the ACP pliers. I ordered some JIS screwdrivers (from Japan) to fit these "phillips" screws, and have WAY more success at not stripping these Japanese screws. The JIS screws are actually Japanese Industrial Standard screws, a significantly different head pitch than the American Phillipsm, which leads to stripping the socket mating surface. Some techs grind the tip of their Phillips screwdriver to better seat into the JIS screw head, but still isn't the right taper, etc. The JIS screws usually have one dot on the head helping identify them as JIS. You may have covered this in later videos, but is something I just learned this year for all these Japanese made bikes. Check it out!! This is why many techs will replace these with socket head screws, when it was due to incorrect tool fitment!! Snap on, Mac, etc don't have them, and probably won't even know what you are asking for!! Again, great training(s). Thanks!!! 6-12-16

@docglidewell5 жыл бұрын
The reason you were in danger of "stripping" - aka ruining the head on - those carb screws was that you are using the wrong screwdrivers. Japanese bikes (and electronic equipment) commonly use JIS screws. With JIS screwdrivers you can feel the driver lock into the cross slot on the screw while a conventional Phillips driver will not seat properly in the JIS screw. You can feel it wobble and you risk ripping up the slots on the screw. Btw, JIS screws can often be identified by a dot on the head next to the cross slots.

I have a 2003 Shadow 750 ACE that I bought and it already had Cobra drag pipes on it. I'm not sure if the carbs were re-jetted or not. How could I tell? The bike does not seem to hesitate at all but it does have popping sounds on closed throttle deceleration (engine braking). There is no popping or backfiring otherwise. Any way I can tell?

For me, one question isn't answered - but very important - in the beginning. If there is an aftermarket exhaust with baffles and original airbox with aftermarket airfilter (k&n), is there still the use of 102 (front) and 104 (rear) or should 104 (front) and 106 (rear) be used because of the air increase of the k&n. He said that the question of using the stock airfilter is important but not why or what would be the difference in setting up the jet-kit 😢

Shane Conley np, you have helped me out many times, I’m glad I can reciprocate. I dont know if you are aware however a JIS screw is identified with a dot on the screw head I have 2 types, one is the popular Vessel brand from Japan- very good driver, it is impact type, but I have never needed to use that function The second type is a Canadian made driver from Go Fast Innovations, a far superior driver, full tang and offer a hex butt for higher torque applications without the shock of an impact driver (although they do offer impact drivers as well as JIS bits). Much safer on carbs IMO. Hey thanks again for all your top shelf information! I’m looking forward to your summer video. Hopefully this will spread the word about using the proper driver.

i have a question that maybe you can help me with, I own this same bike and i removed the back baffles out of the stock pipes, it didnt do it right away but i am starting to get backfire and popping and smoke coming out out the pipes just recently. the bike has no problem starting, it doesnt pop unles i rev the throttle, what should i do?
@matiasgipler47249 жыл бұрын
Aaron Ramirez it might be running rich, rich condition usually makes the bike backfire and pop. and a bike that runs rich will be always easier to start than an lean one,. Run it for a while turn it of and take the sparkplugs out and see if they look rich. if they are you might need to lower your jet sizing
