You say this is out of character for Stark, but it really isn't since Ironman 3. Since he got PTSD, he was obsessed with security. Then in Avengers 2, Wanda gave him that vision of the Avengers dead. That's why he built all those suits. It's why he built Ultron. Then, the mother of the kid at the elevator basically added guilt (as he said about Ultron being his fault). He's being driven by fear and guilt to put controls on the Avengers is how I see it.

Agreed. It's interesting to see how many people can't fully detect the character arc for Tony throughout the movies and that his guilt and fear in this part of the story dominates his actions, not the bravado and arrogance that he was originally known for.

What you're saying is true but as you say many of issues have been brought about by iron man and Ross themselves and the powers that be of the time. The very people that Tony wants the Avengers to be accountable to. Even with Bruce and the Hulk, he says that he wrecked New York, but the reality is Abomination, Ross's creation, did the main damage and Bruce had to stop it from even more destruction. It's those with power that programmed Bucky and Natasha in their various ways. Accountability is needed for the Avengers but not by those who've shown they can't be trusted with it.

Yes, his guilt and PTSD were highlighted brilliantly in Iron Man 3, but the leap to his perspective in this film wasn't super consistent. The conversation with the Alfre Woodard at the start of this film felt way too contrived and it also doesn't make sense that he would be getting more and more concerned about safety and oversight but still bring a child (Spiderman) into the fight. This movie is good, to be sure, but there's a huge number of contrivances and they were fairly forced.

It really shows how strong Spider-Man actually is. He's far stronger than either The Winter Soldier, Captain America or the Black Panther. He's always holding back in terms of sheer strength. He can generally, on average handle lifting anywhere between 10-25 tons (whereas Thor and Hulk are in the range of 75-125 tons on average), but desperation and adrenaline can boost his strength considerably, putting him up there with the likes of Thor or Hulk's standard strength level. He's been shown in the comics tossing around a 50 ton tank, among other feats of strength. To put it bluntly, Spidey is one of the strongest superheroes, especially street-level superheroes and not Cosmic-level heroes like Captain Marvel in the MCU. If he wanted to, he could take out Iron Man with little trouble (although Peter would hate fighting with "Mr. Stark" or Stank...😋).

Well that's not how they explained it in my Gender Studies course. The professor said that since Vision was created by two White cis-hetro males who benefit from and perpetuate the oppressive White patriarchy that he would inherit their racism which would cause him to judge neither Black superhero as having any intrinsic worth. Therefore, shooting one or the other was inconsequential due to systemic racism of the whole Marvel superhero franchise. When asked about Black Panther, the professor (they/them) said that he was a "token" Black superhero. Given how Wakanda built a wall around themselves to keep the poor African tribes surrounding them in ignorance and poverty instead of sharing their wealth in a more equitable fashion, they/them referred to Chakala as the Black Donald Trump. So, clearly an argument can be made that Vision attacked Rhodie due to systemic racism and was likely trying to take out both Black superheroes with one shot. And Vision's remorse was due to him missing one.

Back in Captain America WinterSoldier, when Zola was explaining to Cap and Natasha about Hydra's presence through the years, he said that when necessary Hydra made sure that accidents would happen and it showed the headline about Tony's parents dying in an accident. To be fair, you wouldn't know it was a spoiler until after the fact. She may've just thought it was general information, instead of what it really is. Aside from that, if she doesn't forget what she read, then it ruined a surprise entrance to the story, but no major plot points. That being said, I'd hope she finds a friend to vet the facts before she reads them in situations like the MCU, because general knowledge for a fan is not the same as (and apt to spoil) newcomers.

Yeah for sure, Civil War, Ragnarok and Infinity War is the absolute peak for me. I'm not counting the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy in there though, it's kinda its own thing and highly emotional. Especially Guardians 3, while a bit predictable and quite silly at times, it still made me bawl like no other MCU movie had done before or since.

Her parents were killed as casualties of war, for the greater good, and that started her off. Now she became the one causing the casualties. i really like how they built this conflict (the superhero one, not the parents-dying one) over the series. Tony is feeling responsible for creating Ultron and all the death that caused, he wants governmental oversight. Meanwhile Cap just watched SHIELD, a governmental agency he trusted, get corrupted from within and threaten just as much death. At this point Tony distrusts his own individual judgment (for the first time) and Cap distrusts the chain of command. Neither one is obviously wrong, and they each have very good reasons to be on each side.

Absolutely agree. One small detail many miss is that the innkeeper at the place Zemo is staying at in Germany has a bit of a thing for him. She brings him his breakfast and offers to bring it in and he (very politely) refuses. It brings a bit of humanity back to the character; he probably took some comfort engaging with someone in a friendly way one last time.

We honestly never imagine we’d get such fan service in a marvel movie. Remember in the comic books the characters were always crossing over so a story would start an avengers and go to Captain America and go to Spider-Man, etc. etc. and this is essentially an avengers movie but it’s appearing in Captain America, so that was exactly like reading the comic books and particularly a throwback to the. That I was reading them when the artists were people like George Perez, who had a very clean realistic style. This movie is a masterpiece of clarity and precision.

The MCU did a really amazing story-telling / character development thing, inspired by the comics. Stark turned from Rebel/Vigilante to Institutional Apologist. Cap turned from Institutional Apologist to Rebel/Vigilante. It is pretty powerful commentary on "one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist." Each of us identifies with different characters. Of course, Tony was wrong. :) They make up for it later.

The trivia might have covered this, but if not...Alfre Woodard played the woman who confronted Tony in the hallway after his MIT speech. Woodard worked with Downey beforehand, in the 1993 supernatural comedy "Heart and Souls". Downey also co-starred with Marisa Tomei in another 90s comedy, "Only You". "Civil War" has been my favorite MCU film ever since I first saw it. I feel like the stakes a way higher than usual, since we can usually assume that the heroes will triumph against whatever villain they're facing. Having said that, there are still a few logical issues...in particular, the presence of the huge EMP device in Zemo's hotel room before it is shipped to the power station. I understand that the Russos wanted to show it in Zemo's possession to help establish that he was the one who had it delivered. But if you think about it, there's no reason why Zemo would sneak that huge thing into a hotel room only to then sneak it out in a crate and have the courier service take it from there.

I think it was Corridors channel where they talked with some of the stunt guys that were in this movie. The guy who was Falcons double said he practiced landing in the scene where Rhodes gets shot down so it looked smooth like he had landed before. I really like this film for the fact that its where you see the sort of end points of the way Tony and Steve's arcs crisscrossed throughout the films. Steve started as the government guy, taking orders and doing what he's told - he even has dialog about this in the first Avengers film. Tony started as the lone man rebuking authority and control. Steve's innocence is lost through the whole Hydra debacle with SHIELD and he becomes more circumspect, whereas Tony obsesses over finding a way to protect the world, stemming from his PSTD from the battle of New York, leading him to do things like the accidental creation of Ultron. You said "this doesn't feel like Tony" when he encourages the Avengers to sign the Sokovia Accords, but his character arc has been piloting him to this position the whole time.

"The winter soldier" is a play on words, as in a double entendre. They're kept on ice when they're not working, in order to be able to use them for longer. However, the term also refers to soldiers who stay loyal and committed even when the going gets rough and the odds are against them, like when it's winter, which makes for harsh conditions. It's the opposite of "fair weather fan".

Which always struck me as beautiful, Cap and Bucky are BOTH The Winter Soldier. A brilliant title.

Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel Civil War are the two comic series that essentially got me into comics/superheroes/Marvel so this movie was like the universe peaking. We can all just coast from now on.

The ting to remember about Tony is he's a fixer. When he identifies a problem he fixes it. Loki and the Chitauri were problems, so he "fixed" them with Ultron. The Alpha test didn't do so well, but the idea is still there. When the issue at the start unfolded, he saw it as a problem. The government preset him with a solution and Tony latched on to it.

Second to Tony the most obnoxious person in this movie is Secretary of State Gen. Ross. He's so sanctimonious when he lists all the damage the Avengers caused and no accountability, did he personally pay for the damage he caused in Harlem in The Hulk? After that fiasco with the Abomination how could he have gotten a cabinet position? Aughhh! Oh, great reaction by the way. I'm sure you figured out some of the mistaken observations in the edit. It was much easier to follow if you'd read the comics.

This one has some really nice emotional motivations and payoffs. It is really awesome writing to see the former team break apart and everyone having valid motivations. Speaking of production, for German locals, this movie has quite a few recognizable Berlin locations. They just say it's also Bucharest, Leipzig and the UN.

By this point in their character arcs across 20 movies, Steve and Tony have effectively changed sides with their former selves. Steve used to be the golden boy rule follower agent of the State, but his integrity led him to murkier waters. Tony, conversely, began as a rogue without accountability, but after continued experiences of guilt and PTSD, he wants to continue chasing safety and he's looking for redemption in the eyes of an institution. The way these arcs are crafted across so many films is brilliant and unlike anything ever accomplished in cinema before.

Civil War was a big "turning point" for the MCU, where the story went from bombastic and feel-good cooperation to a more adult, serious conversation. The comic version was quite a bit different, one of the biggest changes being that in the comic a superhero actually did die. It was more a conversation around the Patriot Act and other legislation that was circulating at the time, with the trade-off between freedom and security. It's still very relevant today with the discussion of regulation vs "free market" - it always has to be a balancing act, and tribalism only makes any sort of civil discussion impossible. You can see it in the movie that people don't really stop to look at other points of view, only their own "gut feelings" and naturally dividing themselves into opposing sides.
