A follow up to my first look at the MryLens replacement lenses for my Oalkey RadarLock cycling sunglasses. The MryLenses were somewhat distorting things. Today I put them up against some legit Oakley replacement lenses to see exactly what kind of distortion was happening. Very interesting results.....

I bought a pair of replacement lenses for my Oakley gascans off Amazon. I got the seek optics, Revo deep purple polarized lenses. They are cheap, around $20. I've had them for almost 2 years now and they are fantastic. No distortion or any other issues. I would definitely recommend them.

Interesting viewing as always Shane. Although I’m going to say for it to maybe be a more “realistic” experiment you may want to try the lenses the other way around, so that the light hits on the front of the lens and out of the back (as it would in real life) ie. the light comes to our eyes not from them. I don’t think it’ll make a huge difference but the coatings (or non coatings) on either side may make a difference??.

This is why I had trouble fielding a ground ball with Foakleys on. I always thought it was in my head, but I always thought to myself that why am I having a hard timing fielding with shades on. SMH 🤦‍♂️ Thank you for clearing this up finally

“Spot On” review there! As much as I respect the quality and styling of Oakley I’m too stingy and likely to lose them to spend the money they ask. I’ll stick with my $30 safety glasses that I can justify and, for some illogical reason, never lose.

Hi! Greetings from Argentina! I have a question and maybe you can help me. I just bought a evzero blade photocromic lenses but I just realized that when I look at a spot of light, then I can see the lamp duplicated. it seems like there are some reflections. Have you noticed something like that before? Thanks!

Shane your original video made me wary about the Foakley lenses. The brand you got is sold on Amazon and at the time I didn't make the connect but something just didn't feel right about getting them. I ended up getting some Foakley lenses from eBay which are sold in the UK (where I live) and although the lenses are not as thick as the originals, I don't have the distortion you suffered from. To sum up: just be wary what you're buying. P.s sorry for the long message.

don't really know how to interpret that tbh. if it would really be a problem, nobody could use prescription glasses. you'll may need to give your visual cortex some time to adjust, but after that it should be fine. the oakley will certainly need less time to get used to, though.

One way to think of it, imagine that laser is the image that hits the back of your eyeball... your brain is having to constantly allow for the distortion, twice! Would be interesting to have two lasers and to see if the image moves the same way or if they’re completely different - lizard vision!

I tried Foakleys after Cycling Mavin (love that guy's vlogs by the way) reviewed them favorably some time ago and I don't think I've ever been more disappointed with a product in my life. The fit was awful, one ear stem was significantly higher than the other so they sat crooked on my face, and the metal pins that held the ear stem to the frame fell out after about 10 times using them. After that I bought genuine Jawbreakers and they have been great. I hate the Luxotica monopoly as much as anybody but will never waste my time on anything other than the genuine article again. Disclaimer, I realize not all Foakleys are created equal but my personal experience scared me off from them completely.

Been wearing Oakley's only since the mid/early 1990's.. As a US military veteran I appreciate Oakley's "Standard Issue" program. There are very few companies out there that provide up front discounts to the military community, which in my opinion makes Oakley stand above the rest. Oh, and did I mention their SI program now includes custom built Oakleys? My favorites are PRIZM: Golf (also great for MTB), Sapphire (polar and non), and PRIZM Road + Daily polar for my road bike.

Great work Shane, you've confirmed what my eye have been telling me with all cheap eBay lenses. An alternative is to buy complete fake Oakleys on AliExpress ($15) and replace the crappy lens with a genuine Prizm Road from Wiggle ($100). The fakes are such a good copy the parts are perfectly interchangeable with no distortion.

John Habjan I have found that the lenses I bought from eBay are great. The lenses are not as thick as the originals but don't distort at all. Your idea is a good one. Buy a cheap frame and spend the money on the lenses. You probably could save around £20-£50 or similar in other major currencies.

I bought $15 replacement lenses polarized for my radar paths. I also have genuine ones, really big difference, the cheap ones had very noticeable distortion throughout also a colour tint, whereas the genuine ones did not have any. I'm returning mine (thanks amazon) and buying the legit ones. I'll eat the $100, worth it for quality lenses.

Interesting, have a new pair of polarised prism flight jackets arrived fresh from Oakley direct (ensuring getting the real deal) yesterday and took me 10mins to adjust to the prism effect on the different road surfaces, really odd effect that seemed to accentuate the lumps and bumps !🚴👊

I’d be interested to see if it was an issue solely with the fake pair you purchased or whether another third party have the same issue. I risked buying a fake pair of 100% SpeedTrap’s to see what they were like and I’ve not had a single issue. Could be worth getting your hands on a variety of fake lenses for your glasses to see if there’s a trend.

@@gplama Perhaps you may get interested in testing other lenses in the future. I've bought an assortment of lenses and I haven't noticed any distortion issues in 19/20 lenses, but recently I purchased an inexpensive pair of photochromatic lenses and the distortion is horrendous. I'm not convinced every replacement lens has this distortion issue, I'm wondering if this is a manufacturing problem or a QA problem.

Stephen Moro I bought a few lenses for my Oakleys last year from both Revant Optics and Fuse lenses. The Revant lenses (Flak Jacket XLJ and M Frame Strike) were shaped almost identical to the OEM ones and the optic quality was very similiar with no distortion. They were both from their elite line, which are taper corrected to prevent distortion. The Fuse lenses (Flak Jacket XLJ) were a big disappointment. They had very little curvature from both top to bottom and side to side compared to the OEM lenses. I found out later that Fuse lenses are made with a 6 base curvature but the Flaks have an 8.75 base curvature. If you bend a lens too much to make it fit in the frames it will distort the optics. They aren't taper corrected either which would make it even worse. It's too bad the Fuse lenses aren't made better because they have a few mirror colors and lens tints that would interest me more than what Revant has available. Edit: I assume the Revant lenses you were looking at were from their enhanced line based on the price you quoted. Those are actually made out of triacetate instead of polycarbonate like their standard and elite lines. Polycarbonate is supposedly a better material for lenses.

There is a definite quality to Oakleys (vs replacements) that is not comparable. I will not risk my eyes over saving money, rather the opposite, I will gladly spend more as an investment in my visual safety and overall experience; I also invite anyone considering saving some money on cheap eyewear to sit through some eye surgery videos. I consider myself lucky having used 3rd party lenses that popped out on two crashes (real Oaks never popped out), lens could have slipped into eye, went authentic lenses after that, no question about it.

Obviously you should never ever safe money when it’s about your vision. Oakley puts a lot of money into their development of the lenses which also they don’t shatter if a rock would hit your glasses. Stay with original and save on shoe covers for example.
