Do get a 35 mate, the opening and closing is like a Bentley and a pleasure on its own. I've just bought a 99s myself so good luck with yours, they are a lovely light and well made gun.

The HW35 is a brilliant air rifle. I wish I had kept mine. It was so easy to shoot . I also had an Original 45 in my collection and a Webley Vulcan. The 45 was a great rifle if you could handle it very accurate but a large rifle. The HW 35 was a little less powerful than the 45 but was really nice to shoot. The Webley Vulcan was a real work horse with a nice action but had a single pull trigger (did not really bother me) and a break barrel that could suffer from misalignment of the scope fitted. I remember an adaptation with which you could put a pistol scope where the rear sight was on the Vulcan to help with this. Anyone remember?

Nice rifle! The pump action rifles that you mentioned were probably the Crosman 766 ( 177 ) / 2200 ( 22 ) it took 10 pumps to get them to their full power, I got a second hand 766 for my 12th birthday £30 with a 4 x 20 scope! A friend's dad invited me to take it round to his garden to pit against his 22 rifle, he was actually stunned ( and disappointed lol ) that my 177 could penetrate chipboard further than his 22, I always opted for 177 when buying a new gun, but back in the day, everyone and their aunt would say to get a 22 because it's more powerful!

Great present for your Birthday . With regards to the cocking effort , I noticed that you were holding the barrel midway down its length. Try giving it a sharp tap on the front sight with your palm and then hold it there to cock it . The leverage is far better 👍

Cheers bud will try that Shane

That break barrel takes me right back. I used to have a HW77K with the under lever that made the end of my thumb sore after a few shots on the little release catch.

Makes sense , but I don’t see the gun, as a bench rest type gun , with its light weight , I’ll get in touch with Hull Cartridge and see what they say, I’m sure if anyone nos ,,, they will ,,, cheers Shane

There were some great break barrel air rifles by 1979,80. Such as the Original 45, Webley Vulcan and HW35.

hello Shane nice rifle and Happy B-Day! my first rifle was a Webley and Scott Stingray .22 many moons ago and the cocking effort was pretty tough. I still have it but ordered a Beeman R7 for some easier cocking/shooting, I'm 74, retired and like you, a backyard shooter. that was some good shooting from those iron sights!

A glove might help you with the sore hand issue. I would like to own the HW99S & add it to my HW95 & Remington Sabre TH. I like the size & weight of the HW99S & you get a full powered rifle, what more could you want?

Fantastic rifle. I’ve got the 80, 95 and 99s. The 99s gets the most use, love the lighter weight and slimmer forestock. Also I find the most consistently accurate of the three.
