They did a pretty good job drawing on actual Chinese mythology for their world building. Obviously, they are not direct translations, but those creatures are from East Asian myths. Morris is a Di Jiang, an entity of playful chaos. The weird looking horses are called Qilin, or in Japanese, the Kirin. The nine-tailed Fox is a thing in both Chinese (Jiu Wei Hu) and Japanese (Kitsune) Those big guardian lions are commonly found as statues guarding Imperial Chinese palaces and tombs. And the Phoenixes are called Feng Huang, and are present in Chinese myth, but in this case, they are not known for reincarnation. And obviously, the Great Protector is a dragon, but unlike western dragons that are associated with fire, it is a Chinese dragon associated with water. Fun fact, prior to the Qin Dynasty and Warring States Period, the Qilin was ranked higher in Chinese mythological hierarchy than the Dragon and the Feng Huang. It wasn't until later that the latter gained symbolic primacy in Chinese mythological culture.

There are so many little nods to stuff in this movie that I love. Especially the bus scene. There's a couple there for Jackie Chan movies. Using the jacket in the fight and then flicking it back on during the bus scene is a reference to Rumble In the Bronx and hanging out over the edge of the building on bamboo is Rush Hour 2. The bus scene also has a couple of references to Bruce Lee with his stance and first punch is very close to a 1 inch punch. There's also an Old Boy homage when he reenters the bus. The stunt crew was obviously given a lot of freedom and it shows.

I still really think this could have been a series (maybe even animated). It was surprisingly deep for a later MCU film. So many backstories, family conflicts, and even those training sessions, could have been nicer to see stretched out over a little more time to really see the characters grow into the events they're put through. Would also make the already amazing fight scenes a bit more rewarding when you do get to them.

Cause he's tastless. He makes fun pictures, or beats to drag his movie kicking and screaming into. Watchmen was good (because it already had the pictures for him to slow-mo), but IMO it's like JJ Abrams and Star Wars compared with him in Star Trek, just because you love something doesn't mean you understand it, or what's best for it. That said Universal often fucked with what he was doing and his core vision was at least more cogent on it's own. I like the themes he was trying to deal with. If only they ever dealt with them. Damn Star Wars all over again. Super hyped for Destin too, this movie did more harmonious merging and representative theming of East meets West, reconciling your culture and your identity, alongside the core narrative elements so so so much better than nearly anything else that tried. Like Star Wars, the Matrix, heck the closest mainstream American media I think of was Kung Fu Panda - and if Marvel wasn't making this movie it could have easily ended up as Big Trouble in Little China.

The fight-dance-love scene honestly sold me on their relationship in two minutes. Anyway - Wenwu is basically that Anakin Skywalker trope; obsessed with bringing back his beloved and allows himself to be seduced into further darkness because of it (although he obviously starts out more 'fallen' than Anakin was), and ultimately redeemed, after a fashion, by his son, who has to come to terms with the dark inside of him and find the balance between the dark/light. I don't even care, I'm a sucker for that story ;D

I really hope we get to see more of this style in the MCU it's so much fun to watch.
@Linator42 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you could even visually see Wenwu’s soul is way longer than the other people who were sucked dry (pause). He was nearly as old as Thor. Also technically Aldrich Killian is the actual Mandarin. The way they wrote it was having Trevor Slattery pretend to be The Mandarin, but The Mandarin was the name they came up with. Either way, Wenwu & the Ten Rings were who they were trying to impersonate, but Wenwu just never claimed that name. The Ten Rings are the same group who kidnapped Tony Stark in *Iron Man.* If you haven’t seen the Marvel One Shot “All Hail The King” on Disney+, it shows how the Ten Rings got Trevor.

You should try some Hong Kong martial art cinema from 70s to 90s. They're amazingly well done and play a big inspiration to martial art scenes in more modern movies. Many asian martial art actors/actresses build their fame into Hollywood from those old movies as well. Tony Leung, who played Shang-Chi's dad, and Michelle Yeoh, the aunt, began their acting career through those paths. Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Chow Yun-fat, Stephen Chow, Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung, Maggie Cheung and many more are all a part of my childhood watching those movies, long before their debut in Hollywood.
