I love how Ryan pointed out that they setup scenes to be grounded, and then pulled the usual magical mumbo jumbo. It's something a lot of Marvel movies like to pull out of nowhere. I would have much preferred an emotional proper beatdown between father and son instead of the pulse laser rings.

The rings in the movie are called “Hung Gar Iron Rings”, so they’re still basically rings and not bracelets. They are heavy metal rings used in martial arts for various training purposes. Metal rings have a long history of being used in Yau Kung Mun, Hung Gar, and other styles for weight training, to harden the muscle, skin, or bone, or strengthen the arms and fists. I was basically one of the guys from the video that ryan made "first guy to write fiction" just loving it and wanting more. It's marvel, of course it's amazing. Even though the check list is apparent after it's pointed out to you, in the moment you don't even think about it. I absolutely loved the movie, I didn't know anything about the character but I came out of the theater with a huge grin on my face. I'm excited for the next shang shi movie now.

I just started reading Shan-Chi comics a couple of months before the movie came out and I feel like the movie hit the action beats pretty well. I just wish it wasn't a CGI fest in the 3rd act like Marvel tends to always do.

They covered from all the checklist except obligatory half cooked love story wow. From half the defenders not buying the hand, to not believing in resurrection, you'd think by characters in mcu would be more open to the supernatural by now. You'd also think that more people would coven the chance for longevity, and that with all this alien tech and vibranium the whole world would be more upgraded. Speaking of iron fist, which now the HOnest trailer is out, the one thing that i found hardest to believe was that danny went from being sheltered innocent virgin monk to just loosing it to colleen without any nerves but just went right into a sultry steamy love scene with apparenltly decent skills. Despite monk training, he went from having no control to suddenly no nerves during his first time with a woman?! Come on, the only thing that made the love scene believable was that it was over so quickly ;)

I feel like they did a copout with the villain. They could have redeemed him like it seemed like the movie was going for, but instead did the predictable thing and killed them off for a forced emotional scene. One of the oldest cliches and made the movie be what I thought was good to more or less meh. Not like it would have redeemed the other problems with the movie but it stood out a lot.

It seemed to me that their problem with Wenwu was that they couldn’t pick a lane of complete monster or forgivable villain so they had Wenwu tell Shang Chi he would kill him for failing to save his mother establishing Wenwu as toxic and abusive but then they also decided to have Wenwu die to save his son Shang Chi from a greater evil (like Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi) and it doesn’t make sense to have both at the same time

Changing the formula is unlikely for two reasons, most people watch it and either don't notice or care that it is formulaic, there can be financial consequences to changing things up. The thing I worry about the most is titles like Blade, I don't think it fits into the marvel formula, it has to be different. Unfortunately, there is no sign of change, for one, it is gonna be pg13😥.

It may have been a little uncharitable to say that the only reason Awkwafina learned archery was to give her something to do in the 3rd act. Her character had been set up since the 1st act to be looking for life purpose (beyond being a valet). It would have been better if RG made comedy out of how the movie seemed to denigrate valets as a profession.

Sad part is the bastardization of The Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Up to the ‘reveal’ of the fake Ben Kingsley was creating one of the most compelling bad guys in the entire MCU. Even without magical rings he was more interesting and menacing than 3/4 of bad guys Marvel has put out.

It's definitely still in line with the MCU formula a bit more than I wish (I really hope the next movies really try to break the mold), but it does do really cool things with the formula (Unlike IMO Black Widow where it's just the formula and nothing more at all). It helps that Shang Chi is a bit less quippy than some of the other protagonists. Overall really good movie, I just hope Marvel learns to loosen the formula and really let the directors off the leash. Also better scores please? It's 2021 and I still don't think any main MCU character has a defined score theme. There's themes for groups of people, but not memorable themes for individual characters. I mean, c'mon. Wonder Woman has had an identifiable theme since 2016, there's no reason that we still shouldn't have a definitive theme for Thor or Star Lord.
