Decker failed at researching the "machine gun" that appeared, as did the film makers. The Gatling Gun was made by American Dr. Richard J. Gatling in 1861 and saw service during the American Civil War. So it being a "new" and "British" weapon is a film error, and it didnt take "50 years" after the film takes place to be made like Decker says.
@Khenfu_Cake4 жыл бұрын
To be fair the the modern definition of the machine gun (as it being fully automatic) technically put Hiram Maxim as the inventor of the machine gun, although the Gatling Gun is considered its predecessor. But Maxim was American, so the fully automatic machine gun wasn't a British invention either...
@DataJager6 ай бұрын
Thank you, I was very confused by Decker saying that gatling guns were made 50 years after 'modern style machine guns'. The Maxim Machine gun was invented in 1884 (3 years before 1887, when the movie is set). So while the movie 'machine gun' looks odd, it could have existed. Why they didn't just use the Maxim design for the movie is beyond me.
@ChaosTicket6 ай бұрын
@@DataJager Sight recognition. A lot of people know the look of the Gatling Gun but actual fully automatic machine guns are something people think of World War 1 even if they were made 30years before then. Shanghai Knights really wants to feel like its a Victorian era era film and what people think are oddly Swords. Lord Wrathbone could have ended the whole film with any number of guns he could have had access to.

Funnily enough, the coat and deerstocker cap was never specifically stated as Holmes’ go to attire. A hat resembling the deerstocker was mentioned in one book, but never again. Thus, Boyle remarking on how stupid the getup was is actually a pretty good jab for those who know.

I liked this movie because of the way it seemed so much like of the dozens of Chinese historical action-comedies released after 1980. Particularly, the ones by Taiwanese director Chu Yin-Ping, or Hong Kong directors Jeff Lau and Wong Jing. They were not exactly being original, since their historical comedy films were patterned after the British CARRY ON film series but with the added element of kung-fu. It's rather obvious that screenwriters Millar and Gough were aware of both the CARRY ON films and the Asian variants (many starring Stephen Chow).

The crank style gatling "machine gun" was American and very old by this point. Hiram Maxim was the American born Brit who invented modern machine guns in 1884, but it looked like a ww1 machine gun. Maybe the script meant the Maxim but the prop department was told it looked too modern? Edit: And then it's triggered with a pseudo modern electric gatling gun mechanism... witchcraft!

I'll go ahead, and give Shanghai Knights a 4 out of 5. I actually didn't take the time to nitpick about this or that, but just sat down, watched the movie, and enjoyed it on it's own merits. Maybe I shouldn't say this...but I'm going to, anyway.
