Back in the middle seventies I bought a 1953 Transoceanic radio from a relative,after replacing some defective tubes I could pick up the BBC on shortwave,later on it blew a capacitor and not knowing what to replace it with I finally gave it away, I used to DX on the AM band a lot mostly at night but drifted over to listening to FM for the most part in the late seventies outside of a few like WLS/WCFL in Chicago,WWL in New Orleans and WLAC in Nashville

Like with the Panasonic 2400, Shango, it would be cool if you could do a mod video on how to get better bandwidth out of it. I’d like to see some circuit mod vids in the future.

That Panasonic RF-2400D is a nice little AM/FM radio. I can't remember if I got mine by Amazon or Fry's Electronics, but it's still being sold now. Thanks very much for the long 'unboxing' and the DXing Live!

Hi Shango, Love your videos.! KNX-FM(97.1) is a full powered FM station. The station was AMP 97.1 a CHR(Contemporary Music station formerly) Audacy did what they have done with their sister all news stations in New York,Philadelphia and Chicago simulcasting their AM on a full powered FM as this seems to be the trend. In Washington,D.C. Hubbard owns all news WTOP which moved from 50KW 1500 to 103.5 FM in 2006. Now they recently started simulcasting their AM on News format on AM in the overnight hours. All the best and Merry Christmas!

I still enjoy DXing Am radio at night. It seems the worse the case is on a Zenith Transoceanic is , the better they perform! You're right about the audio quality on these, they have a special magic. To me, the sleeper on this video, is the Panasonic R1007.

I'm glad to see Shango isn't going into any abandoned mine without his canary. You go into one of those mines with poisonous, colorless, odorless gasses without at least a CO/CO2 detector and you might not come out. Here in Puget Sound and in the Willamette Valley further south, there are *gobs and gobs* of low-wattage AM graveyard radio stations, and it doesn't seem like they're going away.

We have an AM Oldies station in my area. They constantly advertised their FM frequency, where they had two translators, with no mention of their TWO AM frequencies. When they solicited listener input I sent a little bit of a nastygram with the same sentiments you're expressing, here. I noted primary license frequency, as well as the increased coverage area of their AM vs FM. Also, that a lot of oldies just sound more authentic on AM. To cut it short, they at least now mention their AM frequencies. But, they continue to brand themselves with cool, modern FM moniker.

Well, right off the bat, I like the "Shock the Monkey" video lights! [RE. Peter Gabriel/Shock the Monkey circa 1983?] Lots of shadows and literal moving lights created a cool effect leading up to the musical collage. As an old (I mean a long time ago) Ham radio guy, I remember the total change of people that you could hear and therefore usually contact between day and night. Cool videos and love the cynicism!

Initially, I thought the station playing Indian / Bollywood music was KGSV, on 660 in Oildale / Bakersfield. They come in faintly in the daytime in Los Angeles. I didn't know there was another station in that area with that type of programming.
@shango06617 күн бұрын
I don't know about KGSV but there are several stations in that area that could come in faintly.There's a ton of stations on 660 that come in here so it is hard to tell.

Those Panasonics rock. Batteries last forever, tunes great.
@xsc100021 күн бұрын
@@MattExzy It take twice the current compared to old transistor radio. Panasonic usually needs 20-25mA / 6V. Old radios need only 10mA. But modern digital radios with DAB/FM are much more hungry.

Ya, I had a Johnson Messenger 1 in my house back in the early 70's it belonged to the PD and I was working as a patrolman back then, we used it for local info and some dispatch before we got State Radio bases in our homes a year or two later as we worked our 12 hour shift and then took a shift as dispatch, we all had police phones in our houses but had to dispatch on the Messenger1's. It was a weird way but that was what we had back then, the year was 1973.

Bandwidth is 9kHz in AM because american grid is 10kHz and that's the radiospectrum, so divide by 2 and and cut the frequencies under 150Hz and steeply LPF above 3kHz to avoid conflicts with neighbors on the grid and you get the audiospectrim, that's for America's, and in Europe cut another kHz from radio bandwidth, where grid is 9kHz, not 10kHz. That's what's allowed by international treaty.

Panasonic makes a lot of winning products in my book. Ford was going to eliminate AM radio in their cars, but that decision was reversed. With the distance capability of AM radio, I doubt that it will be taken away anytime soon.

AM radio is a major component of the EAS, so at least in the USA, AM is NOT going away.....at least in cars, the Govt is not going to allow AM to go away.
