I love your channel, it's so interesting seeing these neat old places in the PNW. When I was a kid in the 1970's my dad used to fish the Deschutes River near Maupin. Sometimes we would take a drive to Shaniko to get an ice cream or pop and look through the town. My mom even named our dog Shaniko...lol. That brings back a lot of good old memories. Thanks for the videos!

Love your videos, your voice is so charming and sweet. The sceneries are great, though melancholy and sad but I like them far far more than ugly hassle crowded cities.

I worked in the cafe in the hotel in the late 90s... One of the most fun and LOVELY jobs I ever had...❤ The place was bustling with tourists... I use to think, ALL these people must come out of the rocks at lunch time... 😁 It was so alive and interesting... Makes me sad to see it now... 😞 THANK YOU for the MEMORIES ! ❤ I'm planning to make a trip there soon, to visit a friend I met when I worked there... 😍

Just found this in my family history book. James Keeney. Lived in shankio Oregon 1900s. James purchased the hotel in in 1905 ran the hotel until 1911... wouldn't be surprised if it's haunted. Would love to check it out.

There are some great video documentaries on KZbin about Shaniko. Much more than meets the eye, especially with the Hotel.

Unfortunately, a semi-truck ran into the ice cream and antique store, so it isn't operational right now, but there are a few other stores to visit 👍

The wagon seating in the field looks to me. That it could be a prisoner wagon or delivery wagon.

Prisoner wagon does appear that what it would be for 👍

Hello love this town been here 2 times about 2010 and antelope .any way the hotel went thru a large renovation before I got there and the whole town was bought by one individual that did a lot of work to the hotel and it was operating prior to that. On the corner by the main highway was a restaurant Drive-In the sign said open 24 hours a day well like I said I've been there twice so they must be on a long lunch break anyway it was fun to be there and then we stayed at the rest area just up the road great place thank you for your Discovery and the adventure of the tour

This brought back memories! Drove through the town many times when I was growing up. Back then (1970's) there was some kind of rod sticking out of the shutters on the school tower. In my young mind I was sure that rod was an Indian arrow. LOL I don't recall that it had any paint at all. If it did it was a blistered white. It looks like it's in better shape now. I'm glad they saved it. The wooden figures on the bench in front of the hotel crack me up. I remember actual old-timers sitting there shooting the breeze. I always wanted to stop and spend more time exploring, but I wasn't the one in charge of our travel agenda.
@InvestigatingtheNW2 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right, the green paint is actually fairly new. All the previous pictures I saw of the school looked like a dull, worn white. If you're ever back in the area you should stop in for ice cream across the street 👍

That wagon with the bars on it. My first thought when I saw it was a jail transport wagon. A question, why don’t you ask people if you don’t know certain things. Like the wagon, and that odd shaped building by the old bank. Just wondering. Sad to see the hotel closed. I remember being inside it decades ago. Guess I just assumed it would always be open. My folks bought sweatshirts there.

Was it more populated and active in the 70s?
@lookingforwyatteearp31372 жыл бұрын
@@InvestigatingtheNW It was about the same probably. My dad was rebuilding the roof on the school. Us kids used to play in the jai cells and on all the wagons and stage coaches. They were in good shape back then. I went and visited for a few days in 2015. Hard to believe how run down the wagons are now. I used to play inside the wooden water tower. We used to live inside the big red barn building that says "Shaniko" on it. I found some old pictures of my time back then. Many of the buildings there now were not there back then.

At one point rail road interests looked into extending the track south from Shaniko,but found it an impractical way to reach central Oregon.

Hi! I know this video is a few weeks old but I’m wanting to visit this town with my husband and dog but saw on yelp that there’s a bunch of signs around town that says no dogs and that there are a lot of resident dogs that are unleashed and attack people who go there. Seems like a far fetched story but didn’t know if you could confirm or deny this?
@InvestigatingtheNW2 жыл бұрын
Hello! I have been through Shaniko a few times now and I have never seen dogs running loose on the streets. I also checked back on my footage and only saw a single "No Pets" sign and that was on the door of the ice cream shop. I imagine they don't want pets in the stores, but I can't imagine they can ban pets on the street outside. Also, recently a truck plowed into the ice cream store and gift shop, so those businesses might not be open :( I encourage you to go and I hope you have a great visit!
